NEW! Announcing Limited Preview for Visual Studio Online Code Search

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Make it possible to set time zone on TFS Online (build) server

TFS Online should provide a way to set a time zone for the TFS server (or per collection).

You could even just implement it when setting Time Zone on https://***.visualstudio.com/_admin/_home/settings.

Most of the people in the world is not living in a place where UTC is the correct timezone.

    This affects:
    * TFS cases timestamps
    * Runtime timing issues if you have integration tests with other servers (with correct time zone).
    * Probably more...

    • TFS: Queries based on results of other queries

I want to create new queries in TFS based on the result of another query.

For example, one (parent) query selects all work items located under a certain work item (lets say work item with ID=5). And now I want to create other queries, that select all bugs, all tasks etc. from the results of the first query?

There, I only have to change the ID of the "parent" work item once and not in all subsequent queries.

Add a UI friendly for admin commands in the project server integration avoiding for example that user needs to execute command line every time that needs to map an enterprise project plan to a team project. Most of time this user has not skill to execute it via command line.

        • Allow build explorer to archive 'drops', retain association between report and drop location.

Team Foundation Build currently has the concept of 'drop folder' - during a successful build, all output files are copied to this location, the build process is not complete until this has happened.
Because of this, our drop folder is on the same physical machine as the working folder, to ensure the build is completed as quickly as possible.
However, we have many, many builds, and would like to 'archive' build output to a network share, and eventually, an offline backup medium.

The actual 'build line entry/report/log' is a matter of kilobytes, so TFS should still be able to list…

          • Filter conversations in TFS team room

I think you should include filters to make this more useful.

            Filter on:

            -User (e.g. messages/replies to me)

            -Work item id

            -Date span

More powerful if combined with the possibility to hashtag a conversation and a search function.

Support TFS a LOT better. Organize the files better so it is clear what must be checked in to source control, and what can be ignored. It is some help to add !_Pvt_Extensions\;!GeneratedArtifacts\ to the compare filter but there are also several folders under client and server that are left empty and also ModelManifest.xml files under client and server, that are not needed in source control, causing compare noise. It would be nice if the LS project did not create so many scattered files and would be nice if clean would clean out the **** not needed so one knew…

              • Allow the column headings on the Task Board to remin visible as we scroll down the screen.

In TFS 2013, we are working on many User Stories in each sprint. When we scroll down to see the stories and their tasks, we lose the column headings, so we don't know which state each task is in.

How do I freeze the screen so the headings are always displays no matter how far I scroll down?

                • Allow us to query work item hierarchy based on additional link types

Currently it's not possible to query work items with changesets (or all changesets for a specific work item or feature). It's also not possible to query which test cases are part of which test suite.

This seems logical as these items aren't stored in the work item catalog, but they're very useful for quality checks of the work items store.

I'd be happy if it were possible to query the existence of any changesets or test suites, but it would be even cooler if you'd be able to query the properties of these as well.

                  • Support building with licensed components (license.licx) in TfsPreview

We have a project hosted on TfsPreview that uses Syncfusion. We can't build it on the build-server because we can't register the relevant component.
I suggest you expose a way one can register a licensed component. It can be, for example a method of editing a pseudo registry key that is only active during build, or you can provide with a set of well-known licensed libraries (for example - "Add Licensed Component" -> "Syncusion" -> "v5.0" -> "Enter key")

                    • Allow a TFS alert when checking out a file that already has a pending change

I have a small team of developers, and we're pretty good at conflict tracking so don't want to go down the road of Exclusive Locking for every job.

It would be useful though if another developer has a pending edit on a file, that any other user would be notified if they also attempt a checkout on that asset.

It's quite easy to keep track of this via Source Control Explorer, but when working in Solution Explorer, or when unshelving a job that's been on hold for a few days, it's more difficult to tell if your change will conflict…

                      • Use same environment for different team projects, or same test agent for different environment

I have create a standard environment using test manager, and successfully create new build deployment that use this environment.

My problem, when I connect to different team project, I have to create a new environment since the first one exists for the first team project. And the problem is I can’t create a new environment that use same test agent that used in the first environment.

I think this is a normal case, since we always use same machine to test multiple application.

                          • Vertical Split by default

I've got my work items queries, and when I double-click them the results are shown (of course). The default view is the horizontal split (list of the work items on top, and the details of the selected one below). However, I prefer the vertical split view (list of the work items on the left, and the details of the selected on the right).

I can change the split view easily, but I need to do it every time I open the results window. Is there any way to configure this windows to open with the vertical split by default?

                            • provide a dashboard at web access welcome page to visualize multiple team projects at same time

It would be very usefull to see multiple team projects information at a single dashboard.

We have been using the multiple team projects approach, recommended when you have some specific necessities. But as a portfolio
manager I would like to see those projects sprints in a unique page, and I think that would be simple to manage and control those team projects.

As a Process Engineer for a medium sized company I would lie to be able to incorporate Logical operators so I can improve the logic of fields. By adding the “and” or “or” logical operators you will be able to customize fields. The current approach is limits approach to 1 or 2 possibilities.

As a Process engineer for a medium sized company I would like to add mathematical operators to the work item customization so I can add (calculate) fields to populate another field. My particular need is to implement an ROI calculation using Weighted Shortest Job First (WSJF).

Add a comment field and/or Work Item to check-out .
You cannot see for what reason a file has been checked out. It makes it impossible to find out what a users has check a file out for.
You can only see after the file has been checked in what the reason that change was made

                                    • More flexibilty on the <WHEN> Field child element

Especially to support adding conditions based on the hierarchical value of the Area Path, please add the ability to specify a begins with or wildcard comparison to the <WHEN> conditional field element. Currently it support only "equals" comparisons to the specified value. This could be done by specifying an operator attribute with various comparison operators. This would be helpful if being used against numeric fields too (e.g. GT, LT, etc).

                                      • store and download check-in policies

check-in policies should be stored and downloaded from the TFS server.
currently, custom policies must be installed on EVERY developer machine, or suffer the wrath of error messages. If stored on the server, VS could auto-update (a la clickonce) during checkin.

                                        • When comparing files, make it easier to filter out changes that are just renames or formatting

When I get a code review request from another developer, I would like to only see "real" changes that actually change the meaning of the code. In the review requests I get, most of the changes are just renames of variables or a different formatting (whitespace, moving braces, ...). It's really difficult to detect the "real" changes to the code that actually cahnge the behavior between all the noise that's caused by other changes like renames.
