I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Bring back Macros

I am amazed you've decided to remove Macros from Visual Studio. Not only are they useful for general programming, but they're a great way to be introduced to the Visual Studio APIs.

If you are unwilling to put in the development time towards them, please release the source code and let the community maintain it as an extension.

      Hello Macros Supporters,

I wanted to share an extension that the Visual Studio team released on the Visual Studio Gallery that you may not have seen that brings back some of the macros support that you might be missing.

      Download and try it via:
      1. The Visual Studio Gallery: https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/d3fbf133-e51b-41a2-b86f-9560a96ff62b
      2. Or get it in Visual Studio via: Tools > Extensions and Updates… then search for “Macros for Visual Studio 2013”

If you find this extension useful or have suggestions/ideas on how we could improve it, please leave comments on the Gallery page (under the Reviews section).

      Thanks,
      Cathy Sullivan
      Visual Studio IDE Team

    • Support multiple rows of document tabs

It would be really nice if the IDE allowed multiple rows of document tabs. Currently, I'm using the "Tabs Studio" add-in for this (http://www.tabsstudio.com). See here for an example: http://www.tabsstudio.com/documentation/addins/several-tabs-highlighted-with-the-default-style.png

      • Ability to configure Source Control settings per project

Currently, The source control settings can be set per windows user.So if I'm working on different projects and each one has it's own Source Control (VSS,TFS,Tortoise...etc), then every time I want to open one of the project, I have to go and change VS source control settings to meet the source control that is being used for the project...

This is a time consuming and causes a frustration for me.

        Vote please :)

        • Open links in an actual browser

Please take the Web Browser out of the Visual Studio, open links in the default web browser (and please my own default, not Internet Explorer). Visual Studio is not good as a web browser and it uses Internet Explorer inside to make it worse.

          • Put an option to disable indentation after pasting code

Vertically line up arguments of a function call. Then copy the block of code. Paste it somewhere else. The allignment which you carefully made is all gone. You have to do the same custom formatting every single place you paste your code.

Unfortunately, there is no way of preventing this in Visual Studio 2015. I checked for a solution on the internet. Most people are complaining about the same problem and there is no cure.

Please provide an option for disabling this behavior.

            • Ask before moving files in Solution Explorer tree.

Accidentally moving files to random directory really annoys.

              • Show indent guides like Notepad++ does

Indent guides help quickly finding out where a scoop starts and where it ends. I think an advanced IDE like Visual Studio must have this feature. I know that there is an extension for this, but why doesn't Visual Studio have a basic feature like this natively?

                • Store per-project source formatting settings with project properties

I wish it were possible to define per-project editor settings that affect formatting and writing style: tab size, use tabs/spaces, autoindent and so on.

Because, different solutions (or even projects in one solution) can have different coding styles or conventions.

Having to poke in several tabs of environment settings every time as I switch projects is a major annoyance.

Actually the formatting settings are not private user preferences; they are part of a project and should be stored in source sontrol, so that the next person that takes on the code automatically gets the proper settings.

                    • Add native Markdown support

Markdown is known as best idea for project text files. For example most README files novadays are written in markdown.

Also default README.md could be possible added to project templates.

To get more details visit Markdown specs page http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/.

                      • New VS option "Go To Definition Implementation"

VS offers an option “Go to Definition” when you want to see a function definition; however, if your object is implementing an interface this option takes to that particular interface and you are forced to look for the object that implements this particular method. I propose a new option called “Go to Definition Implementation” which would take you to the object that implements that particular interface.

                        • Native multi-editing (multiple cursors and selections) support

Multiple selections/cursors in Sublime Text is by far the most useful editor feature I have in my toolbox. Using search and replace in Visual Studio is slow and unwieldy in comparison and I find myself frequently copying blocks of text into Sublime Text just to perform versatile edits using multiple cursors, after which I copy the result back into Visual Studio.

A future version of Visual Studio would win huge points with this feature alone.

                          • Support .editorconfig

It would be awesome if Visual Studio supported .editorconfig files like so many other editors and IDEs.

"EditorConfig helps developers define and maintain consistent coding styles between different editors and IDEs. The EditorConfig project consists of a file format for defining coding styles and a collection of text editor plugins that enable editors to read the file format and adhere to defined styles. EditorConfig files are easily readable and they work nicely with version control systems."

You can read more about it at http://editorconfig.org/

                            • save text files with the newline convention present in the file when opened

The Visual Studio text file editor has an "advanced save" option that allows me to choose a particular format to save to, every time I save a file.
However, 99% of the time, the right thing to do is to save the file using whatever convention was present when the file was originally opened. Thus, if I open a file with LF-style line termination, new lines I add should be terminated with LF, and the file should be saved as LF-terminated. If I open a file with CRLF convention, new lines I *** should be terminated with CRLF, and it…

                              • Visual Studio should be Touch-Friendly

Anyone who has put Visual Studio 2012 on a computer with a touch screen will attest to how bad the environment behaves when attempting to touch the screen.

Visual Studio should include either a full-fledged touch mode or include settings that allow users to take advantage of touch enabled devices.

                                • Add ctrl-click go to definition from Productivity Power Tools

The VS2010 Productivity Power Tools had a ctrl-click go to definition feature. This was great and could be an easy option to add (does not need to be on by default).

                                  • Identify and Nest Dependent Files in Solution Explorer using Right Click Menu

Identify and Nest Dependent Files in Solution Explorer using Right Click Menu.

Allow us to nest files in solution explorer without having to edit the csproj file. For example, we have 4 files that are breeze.*.js, and I like to nest them as dependent on breeze.js so they show up collapsed in solution explorer.

Currently we edit the csproj file to do this, and we also do it for css and for custom js. Another example:

                                    repositories.js
                                    -- attendee.repository.js
                                    -- session.repository.js
                                    -- speaker.repository.js
                                    -- lookup.repository.js
                                    -- abstract.repository.js

For files like jQuery that have 4 or 5 dependent files this is…

                                    • Open fast

Make it so that opening a simple text file from Explorer is fast. It's just Text. Make it so fast to open that I no longer need a notepad replacement.
Make VS2011 into the best notepad replacement!!

It's just text, after all. It's ALL text.

                                        • Add a better shortcut for commenting and uncommenting - "CTR+/"

“CTR+K,C” for commenting “CTR+K,U” for uncommenting shortcuts are NOT useful, easier to click a button on a toolbar instead.

Every developer comment / uncomment pieces of code quite often. Please add "CTR+/" shortcut for toggling comments.

This tiny addition could save tones of working hours for developers. ReSharper has it; but it would be much better to have it as a build-in feature.
