I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Allow user's currently open files and window settings to persist across machines

When opening a solution stored within a synced folder (e.g. across Dropbox) across multiple machines, the .suo file gets rewritten, meaning that previously-opened files and custom windows gets removed.

Separating these settings so that they are machine-independent would mean that we can use multiple machines to open the same folder, and continue working where we left off.

The primary use-case for me is to be able to work across both my desktop and laptop interchangeably, without having to recustomise my environment each time.

    • Popup confirm dialog on folder drag/drop in solution explorer

Right now you can accidentally gimp a project by dragging a folder somewhere it shouldnt go; often without knowing.

It would be nice to have a popup confirm move dialog box so I could prevent the action from happening.

      • copy files/folders from one studio to another studio

        Hi

Currntly files/folders are not get copied if we perform from IDE.
which required we open folders & then copy it to another IDE.

It will be great feature to allow copy files/folders from 1 IDE to another IDE.

        • Apply button to the Tools/Options dialog

It should be possible to run "Apply" directly from the Options dialog to see the changes being applied. It's unproductive having to go back and forth between the dialog to see changes being applied to the IDE.

          • Show code regions in Document Outline pane

I want to be able to quickly explore the regions defined (with #region e.g. in C#), in my code file and quickly navigate to them

I believe a natural place for that would be the Document Outline pane which now is empty if the current document is a C# file (guess for VB.net and other languages the same happens)

            • Give the option to edit a project file if it fails to load.

Sometimes a project file has an invalid reference or can not find a referenced file or project. Instead of needing to open Notepad++ to edit the project file, it would be great if VS would offer you the option to open the project file if it failed to load.

              • Remove the default QuickInfo popups when hovering over code, or create an option to disable

VS2015 includes a highly irritating "feature": when I mouse over any bit of code, it shows the type and name of the parameter again in a popup window.

For example, I have a method with a "string firstName" parameter. If I mouse over it, it pops up a window "helpfully" telling me that I have a parameter called firstname... and its type is string!

This means that moving the mouse around anywhere on a code file creates literally dozens of annoying popups that add no information at all.

Please provide a checkbox in the options menu to disable this "feature".

                • Resource Editor: Browse for existing files in a useful location

In the resource (resx) editor, choosing Add Resource > Add existing file... always opens a file browser in c:\Windows\System32.

It should have a preference option to set the default folder (or at least default to the configured "projects" path) and then remember the last folder you browsed to, so that you can return here multiple times to add many resources during a day of work without having to browse away from the middle of nowhere every time.

This is a bug in 2008, 2010 and 2012, so it's nice we now have a way of reporting it and maybe getting…

                  • Provide keyboard shortcut to scroll horizontally.

I want the same functionality as ctrl+up/down, but horizontal. I can keep the cursor in one spot, and scroll vertically easily enough, but to scroll horizontally one must go to the mouse or scroll by arrow keys that keeps the content I want to see just off screen to the right. Why can't we have a feature to keep the cursor in place, and scroll left and right with the keyboard?

                        • Universal Azure App Template

It could be great if Visual Studio had a default template name "Universal Azure App".

This template will fully cross usage of Universal App (W10) and Azure App Service to provide a mobile cloud-centered app in less than a minute.

So, this template will create a solutions with 2 projects (Universal + Azure App).

And, to be more productive, create a modulable template (with checkboxes) that can implement by default :

                          * Table query (like the simple Todo sample)
                          * Authentication (Facebook, Twitter, ... on both sides)

                          • provide a method to suppress messages/warning from the error list

it's possible to suppress warning in both the c++ and the c# compiler (and i assume, also in the vb compiler). however, there are lots of other components writing warnings to the error list. (e.g.: a "warning 150" concerning a mismatch of architecture.). in larger projects, these warnings, if not apropriate, make the error list unusable. (i have 230+ such warnings in the error list.)

it should be possible to turn these off, in order to make the error list usable again.

                            • Please Utilize "Sub Menus" in the Solution/Project Context Menu More.

The functionality of Visual Studio is not what is bothering me so much. It is how ridiculously huge the menus are becoming - mostly in regards to the context menus surrounding the Solution Explorer.

I realize a lot of users have finally become accustomed to the layout, but the sheer number of menu options is becoming burdensome, especially on smaller screens like Ultrabooks.

Enclosed is a screenshot just to demonstrate...

With Windows 8 you can specify a connection as metered. Would be great if VS would be aware of this and turn off things like update & extension checks.

                                • Automatically Select Startup Project

If there are multiple projects, and only one is an executable, I think it is reasonable to take a guess that this is the start up project. It is painful every time you get a new branch/clean checkout from source control you have to go through the step of finding it and setting it. This has niggled me since 2002!

                                    • Integrate something like the www.whatamIdoing.co.uk Visual Studio addin so I can see exactly how much time each part of a project has taken

The addin allows me to track exactly how long each file of each project has been worked on. best case, this would enable me to improve my project time estimation and bill customers properly. Worst case, it means I an fill in my time sheet more easily. This could be embedded in visual studio.

                                        • Tool to Flag/Remove Unused and Unreferenced Assemblies from Project

Visual Studio 2013 templates install a large number of assemblies along with their references. This is fine except that many end up unused.

Side-by-side assemblies are a fine idea, but we'll need a way to clean up the clutter and save resources.
