NEW! Announcing Limited Preview for Visual Studio Online Code Search

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Improve support for multiple users using Web Deploy Publish Preview

The Preview pane of the Web Publishing dialog in Visual Studio works quite nicely when you're the only developer working on the codebase. However, it seems to fall down when multiple developers publish. It includes a lot of phantom changes in the list (once you drill in, the two panes of the diff are the same).

Perhaps the information used to detect changed files could be cached on the web application that is being published to. Of anything, that would be a great publish profile option.

    • Support LinkResource in Visual Studio 11

When a managed assembly depends on unmanaged DLLs it always a good ideia to set them as linked resources. It has two BIG advantages:

      1. In VisualStudio, when you add a reference to the managed assembly, the unmanaged DLLs are automatically copied to the output path.

      2. When the managed assembly is added to the GAC, the unmanaged DLLs are automatically copied to the same folder.

It would be awesome if you added a LinkResource option to the "Build Action" drop down.

It used to be possible to do this in VS2008 by editing the .target files but I never…

        • Allow Code Snippets that are part of a solution to be automatically added for use

A user's snippet library can become quite an unruly place. Currently, the only way to add snippets that are not part of an extension or provided out of the box is to add them to your personal snippet library.

At many organizations, you may be working in two or more solutions with many projects. It may be helpful to have code snippets defined--some of which only pertain to the current solution. However, the only recourse is to add them all to your personal snippet library.

As a developer, I want to be able to add code snippets to a Visual…

          • Allow Generating a Sequence Diagram from Source Code in Shared Project.

Is possible to Generating a Sequence Diagram from Source Code (Reference is http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/ee317485.aspx)

We cannot generate it from projects that share code across multiple apps.

            Please allow it.

            • Allow ReadOnly Modeling Projects for Premium and Professional versions of Visual Studio

Well, as soon as the ALM Assessment Rangers Workbook has a question in Architecture & Design Spreadsheet asking if all of the team members have access to all the project diagrams, it makes sense that all Visual Studio versions have at least Read Only access to the modeling project.

Nowadays, to accomplish it, I need to manually export the diagrams and publish it on any portal, like Sharepoint.

              • Rename items in "Recent" list on Start Page

At my company, I can be working in different source branches at the same time, meaning I can have a list of many different recent projects on the Start Page. However, since all the solution files are named the same (just in different branches), I have to hover over each item in the list to see where it is physically located to determine which one I need to open.

If we had the ability to rename the entries in the "Recent" list, I could give each item a name that tells me which branch that specific solution is in.

                It's…

                • Add some primitive UML editing into Premium edition

Please add some primitive ablity to edit some (Class diagram, Sequence diagram) to VS Premium or Pro version.
The main reason to do this is that UML is the common language for teams, and part of standart, not all team members have Ultimate license and they dont have this ability to communicate.
In this case to maintain common standart all teams reject VS UML from theirs workflow.
I think, that most simple features (drawing, commenting) should be allowed in Premium or Pro edition.

                  • Improve performance of the ASP.NET Editor

When an ASP.NET page gets complicated with around 20 textboxes and 20 labels for example. The performance of Visual Studio grinds to a very slow crawl. It can often take 30 seconds for the property window to catch up when you change controls. Saving the page can often take up to 15 seconds. Trying to use the editor in design mode at all becomes almost unusable.

Another problem I noticed on these types of pages is if you select 5 or 10 text boxes at once and attempt to change a common property such as the max length property. The…

                    • Allow windows that auto-hide to be dismissed by pressing the Escape key even when mouse is over it

Tool windows that are set to auto hide (like Find Results) should get dismissed by pressing the Escape key regardless of the current mouse position. This used to work correctly in editions of Visual Studio prior to VS 10.
This seems to be a general problem with the handling of mouse input where the current position of the mouse causes issues even when the input is via the keyboard. As another example, when the context menu is invoked via the keyboard menu button, the item under the current position of the mouse gets selected, interfering with keyboard navigation of the…

                      • Fix extremely slow intellisense for methods with many (thousands) overloads

Intellisense in VS2013 and probably older versions is extremely slow for cases when there are many overloads for the same method e.g. a class Foo has methods Do(...) with thousands of overloads.

This causes intellisense on edits anywhere in the entire file to be extremely sluggish. This is the case when referencing an assembly directly, but it is even worse in the case when the method is from a project in the solution. In this case inspecting devenv.exe with procmon reveals that devenv opens and reads the code-file with the method overloads for each overload, that is thousands of times!

                        • Named Solution Explorer Views

If I create a new scoped solution explorer view I would like to me able to rename the tab. Or even just use the top level folder name. For eample I like having a ViewModels and Views scoped solution explorer in tabs and would like the tabs named accordingly. Currently all tabs are named solution explorer. See crude drawing attached.

                          • Fix Test Explorer output (monospace font and output not via link)

Arguably a great thing with VS2012/2013 was a new faster test executer. However, the new Test Explorer is in almost all ways a lot worse than the old version. One thing particular is that this UI completely disregard normal code fonts and uses a non-monospace font which causes output formatting to not follow normal trace output in the output window. Since every single developer in the world most likely at one point has depended on monospace font to get formatting right in traces this inconsistency is extremely annoying.

Not only the for the fact that to actually get to trace…

                            • Console.ForegroundColor Visual Studio in Menu->View->Output tab

When I am writing console application I can change console background or foreground color and make some data more conspicuous.
But when I am writeing non-console application and I use Console.WriteLine it display data in View->Output tab as BLACK text only.
Sometimes I have to copy a lot of data from Output and use it in elsewhere like Excel.
I think it would be a little better when I will be able to use colors in Output tab. I will easily see if there is any Debug exceptions in other color between my data.

                              • Add support for Java (as long as JDK is installed)

Basically making coding and compiling possible in the Visual Studio IDE as long as the Java Development Kit is installed on the machine.

This would prevent the need for multiple IDE's installed on a machine for developers who use both Java and .NET lanaguages.

                                • Alphabetized order of <Compile...> entries within <ItemGroup> in csproj

Compile entries within <ItemGroup>s within the csproj file should be sorted in a consistent order.

As described in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/20563017/sorted-order-of-files-in-csproj, maintaining a consistent sorted order of <Compile> entries would mainly benefit the resolution of merge conflicts.

It would always be clear where a file belongs, and simply changing order (e.g. Remove a file from project, re-include the file) would not lead to visible changes in a diff.

                                  • Undo changes for team explorer files with pending changes which are not different from their latest version (have zero differences from late

When working on moderately large code bases one can end up with a lot of files in Team Explorer which have pending changes, but are not different from the latest version on the remote repository server. It would be nice to have a VS feature that undoes changes for the files in the pending changes list, that are not different from their latest version. This would help with the merging process and save some time.

                                    • Allow to change code font size at different monitor

Some developers use several monitor (2 or 3 or more) to coding with Visual Studio, it supports code editor displays in different monitor, but if monitor place as vertical, code font is smaller and can't adjust for best view. Please consider and add this function into VS IDE font editor.

                                      • Autogenerate comments for populating Intellisense

In C#, if you type /// comments, those comments appear in Intellisense.
If you don't have a comment, no intellisense info.
There are tools that will analyze your function names and the types of your parameters and autogenerate sentences to populate the comments.

Any comment that can be autogenerated from the code becomes a maintenance burden. If those comments can be autogenerated from the code, then Intellisense could generate the comments whenever it tries to display a function that has no /// comments. It would save us from adding to our source code maintenance weight and would still give us…

                                        • To make Visual Studio an empty IDE.

I suggest you to make VS and empty IDE which I can download languages in it instead of making many softwares (EG: VB, VC#) which the size of each on 250/300 MB and it is almost the same and the difference between it is the language which I'll use in each software.
