I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Support a XML diff tool inside Visual Studio for use with & without TFS.

The diff tool in VS 2012 is a fantastic leap forward but fails badly with XML files (as does most tools). I would love a XML diff tool or the current diff tool to be extended to support XML. Ideally this tool should work with TFS (i.e. when merging etc...) but also without TFS - let me use it to select and compare two files on disk.

    This would have benefits for
+ modifying work item templates for TFS
    + SharePoint developers
    + Lightswitch developers
+ Windows 8 app developers who use XAML
+ Anyone using XAML (WPF, WF, Silverlight…

      • Provide Target Framework upgrade switch for devenv.exe/Visual Studio solutions

When upgrading a Visual Studio solution from one version of the .Net Framework to another, there is no easy method to simply upgrade the Target Framework for all Visual Studio projects in a solution. Instead, one is forced to manually change the Target Framework for each and every individual Visual Studio project file. Instead, a /TargetFramework command line switch should be made available for devenv.exe to allow upgrading all Visual Studio projects in a solution to a specified version of the .Net Framework.

        • Incorporate double-click code tab to bring it full screen and double click to restore back like Eclipse IDE.

Incorporate double-click code tab to bring it full screen and double click to restore back like Eclipse IDE. I am glad you stopped popping it into a new window but would like to easily double click to go full screen with the code window and be able to return without having to unpin and re-pin everything.

          • Provide an option to display CodeLens beside declarations rather than above.

CodeLens is extremely useful, but I don't like that it adds an extra [fractional] line which isn't really "there" into the visual flow of my code on the page. This is made worse by the fact that CodeLens takes a brief moment to load, so when a code file is first opened, it appears as if there are many extra blank lines (very obvious & distracting when these 'blank' CodeLens spaces appear beneath doc comments or attributes but above the declarations they decorate).

If there were an option to display these annotations off to the right side of a declaration…

            • Go to construct definition

Just like right click goto definition, it would be great to be able to right click on an "end if" and go to the actual "if" statement. This would be useful with loops and other constructs as well. Or, when hovering over an "end if" you could show the "if" as a tooltip.

              • Pull request should not create merge commits when a fast-forward merge is possbile

Since Update 1 Team Foundation Server 2015 creates a merge commit when completing a pull request.
While this might be useful in some cases, for us this is kind of annoying and we would like to switch that feature of.

                • Add distraction free mode like in Sublime Text

"Distraction Free mode is full screen, with an extra emphasis on your content. All user interface chrome is hidden, leaving you with nothing but the file you’re working on. It’s a great help when you want to ignore everything else and just write."

Allow me to change the color of a Generic Definition in a class or method.

                    public class Herp<TDerp>
                    {

Add support for the Go Language. This way developers will not have to use more than one IDE.

                      • Improvement for Find Shelveset section.

I propose add combobox instead of textbox in "Find Shelvesets" section. Combo should contain team member names or at least last input values.
Reason: it is not comfortable to look for shelvesets of another team members as you need to know how them names are spelled.

                        • Provide option to turn off "Source Control - Team Foundation" Output Window messages

I find that these messages provide little value, to me at least, and are constantly interrupting my workflow whenever I take action on files that are automatically checked-out.

I use two monitors, and have all tool windows on the second monitor maximized so that my primary monitor only displays the code page. When I am executing an activity in Solution Explorer, for example, that causes automatic TFS checkout of a file that is the focus of my attention, I am switched away from Solution Explorer to the Output Window showing output from "Source Control - Team Foundation". Honestly I don't…

There are no more macros left, so we need another option to trim trailing whitespace on file save. Motivation given here:

                            • Enable Abstract Syntax Tree Source Files via Roslyn

Now that Roslyn is available (or will be available), it is time for Visual Studio to start thinking in files that represent Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs), or .ast files. .ast files are the actual source files that are checked into source control. When an .ast file is loaded into Visual Studio, the developer's "formatting preference configuration" is applied to the .ast file to display the file to the preference of the developer.

Formatting preference configurations would include things like:
                              - Spaces or Tabs for tabbing
                              - Braces on same line as method declaration or below
                              - Spaces around symbols
                              -…

                              • Please stop throwing "Cannot find the requested resource" exceptions

I develop Visual Studio extensions with Break on all Exceptions set.

Every time I do anything in Visual Studio (launch VS, open the Options dialog, use Solution Explorer), I got lots of first-chance ArgumentExceptions, "Cannot find the requested resource", from
                                Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.dll!Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.ResourceLoader.TryEachApplicableNamespace<string>(string resourceName, Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.ResourceLoader.GetResourceDelegate<string> getResource) .

This severely interferes with my debugging workflow.

Please please stop throwing this exception.

                                  • Add possibility to force encoding on project/solution level

This would be very useful to be able to force encoding on solution or project level and don't select it on per-file basis.
This would be great feature for internationally distributed developer teams and for open source projects.

                                    • Code snippet functions

Please add the support for the code snippet functions for following following scenarios

                                      1. auto generation of GUID - Add a new function something like CreateGuid()

                                      2. Finding out the method name, property name and field name - Add new functions something like MethodName(), PropertyName(), FieldName(), or ParameterName() with usage something similar to "ClassName()" function.

This will be greatly helpful when defining snippets for inserting the implementation of custom attributes.

Please refer to the present IDE support for Code Snippet Functions at the link below

                                      • Option to show only solutions in the recent projects

The "Recent Projects" lists shows both projects and solutions. I prefer to only have solutions listed there. An option to filter out projects would be good. Of course, then the name "Recent Projects" is inconsistent. Therefore another possibility would be to provide an option to use either a "Recent Projects" or "Recent Solutions" list.

                                        • Bring back the Code Definition Window in Visual Studio Express

The Code Definition Window is no longer available in the Express version of Visual Studio 2012; bad idea - if anything, Microsoft should be adding features to the free version of their IDE, not removing them.

This is not the kind of feature that can be thought of as 'professional only' or 'enterprise only'; it's a basic development aid, and it's available in other free IDEs (since before it appeared in VS, actually).

If Microsoft wants to maintain their relevance in the IDE space, and win developers over to the new Store and mobile platforms, crippling the free version is…
