Visual Studio

Welcome to the Visual Studio UserVoice site. Let us know what you would like to see in future versions of the Visual Studio suite of products. This site is for suggestions and ideas. If you need to file a bug, visit the Visual Studio Connect site: http://connect.microsoft.com/visualstudio.

ASP.NET Runtime/Web Tooling suggestions have moved! All your ideas, including your votes, have been transferred and are searchable in the ASP.Net Uservoice forum. Please submit any new ASP.NET Runtime/Web Tooling suggestions, or vote on existing suggestions by going to http://aspnet.uservoice.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks – Deon Herbert

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can vote and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can vote on it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Save error list on project close.

I'd love to have my error list save so I can reopen mysolution file and continue bug fixing without having to rebuild. This would be a tremendous time saver.

    • Test Manager 2012 - copy test configurations

There is currently no way to clone a test configuration.
I have a test configuration with lots of variables. I want to clone that test configuration so that I can change certain variables without having to manually re-create the new test configuration

        • Add filters to Sprint Board

I find it useful to have following filters on the sprint board:
          1. Multiselect PBI Status filter (to focus on incomplete, for example).
          2. Multiselect Activity filter for Tasks (to allow users to focus on tasks related to particular activity like testing, development or documentation).

          • Dynamic query variables for work item query

If work item query contain field that often changed like the version (for analyzing defects from version to version) you must edit a query and set new value. Or another example: analyze tasks by user, create a query for each user not good idea.
It would be good to give the ability to set value for such fields dynamically through a dialog box or a certain field on the toolbar of query results.

            • Add compiler warning for when a member function is overridden without use of the "override" keyword.

The "override" keyword in C++ is nice, but it would be nicer still if there were a way to enforce its usage. Currently, it is easy to forget to include it, and errors can go unnoticed. Just having a warning, even one that is off by default, would satisfy me.

I need an extra field that support email AND can be used in alerts to sent to - like the 'Assigned To' field.

Normal stiring fields with support userids is available, but field can't be used in alerts like "Field = @Me"

                • Implement full mouse tracking for CodedUITests not just start and end points

CodedUI tests are pretty limited for reproducing hand drawn signatures or handwriting recognition, for example.

Currently only the start and end points of each stroke are recorded and replayed.

See my post at: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vstest/thread/5bdad645-de3b-47dc-b617-afec68abff7b for a full description of the problem with example output.

                  Thanks...

                  • Allow regex to be used in the 'Filter Text' box in the 'Test View' window

The 'Filter Text' box lets you filter out all tests except the one whose names contain some text.

This is a nice feature but it would be much nicer if one could use regex or even wild cards instead.

I understand it's possible to use a test list editor instead to browse them by category. But some programmers aren't aware of the 'Test Category' feature or often times they won't bother to update them.

                    • Increase text cursor thickness in editor windows

From the description of the Productivity Power Tools extension: "As the resolution of monitors increases, it’s becoming more difficult to find the caret in the code editor." As a counter measure I suggest making the text cursor better visible by increasing its thickness from the current one pixel (that's getting thinner and thinner on high resolution monitors!) by two pixels or maybe even a configurable value. Several other text editor applications use a 2 pixel wide caret/cursor and it makes a huge difference.

                      • User Activity Stream

Many other project management systems provide the ability to view all activity of a specific user within that system. For TFS, this could be taken even a step higher since it also controls source control.

This would essentially allow you to, at a glance, view your (or a specific users) source control history (check-ins, merges, etc) and modifications to work items/tasks, ordered by the date they occurred.

                        • Add "Build Startup Project" command

It should build projects the same way as in "Launch startup project", except no launch. Since currently there is no command, it's not possible to bind a shortcut. With removal of macros in VS2012, the only way to achieve this is to write a custom extension...

                              • Creating VMs as part of Integrated build.

We need to have the facility to create automatic VMs depends on the build configurations and deploy the builds on the VMs for integration testing. Currently we are preparing the required number of VMs before firing the build and deleting the VMs manually once the release deployment and testing completes. This require lot of manual intervention in integrated build deployment process.

                                  • Allow work items to be moved from one team project to another

Life will be much easier in TFS if work items can be moved from one team project to another (within team collection) just like source code files/folders.

                                    • Test Tools in VS 2012 - Merge UIMap Actions into One Method

Within the UIMap there is a function that will split a UI Action into 2 methods. What I would like to do is just the opposite. Due to the instability of the Coded UI Test Builder, and the unpredictability of playback I have many Methods in the UIMap that I would like to merge into 1 Method.

                                      • Let me get back to where I was after I "go to definition".

Put a special bookmark when I "go to definition" so that I can cleanly get back exactly to where I was. If I "go to definition" again, push another location onto a stack. This is slightly supported today, but not nicely at all.
Put Mads Kristensen on this and it'll be beautifully integrated.

                                        • Bring back classic Visual Studio

You have made Visual Studio 2012 more difficult to use by making it low-contrast and flat-gray. It really hurts my eyes. As a person who makes his living using this tool 8+ hours a day, you have made a complete mess of it. It’s not a bloody art project, it’s a tool we use to get a job done. And don’t pretend that the “Themes” make it better. If you keep alienating the developer community like this Google and Oracle are going to eat you alive. Metro my foot. Give me Windows 7 and VS 2010; all I want is…
