  1. C# REPL - execute one-off C# code on the fly from within VS

    I'd like to see a full read/eval/print loop for C# built into Visual Studio - much like F# Interactive, or Ruby's "irb".

    When debugging, this would let you interact with the current state of the debugged application - like the Immediate Window does now, but more powerful (e.g. with support for lambdas).

    When in design/editing mode, this would work a lot like LinqPad, but integrated into the IDE. It would let you evaluate expressions and execute multi-statement code blocks. This would let developers interactively experiment with their application classes ,.NET framework classes, and third-party APIs while writing code in Visual…

    • Make (editing) Typing/Scrolling more responsive

      There is a visible lag between the moment you press a key and the moment this translates into a character on the screen. Things like Go To Definition, and scrolling, can hang for several seconds.

      It appears to get worse over time as you work in the editor.

      • Provide Better DirectX support in WPF

        These DirectX support classes are new in WinRT / Metro. Please provide them in WPF.

        SurfaceImageSource enables full composition of DirectX content into a XAML app. This allows drawing DirectX content into the XAML visual tree, useful for complex image effects, data visualization, and other immediate-mode drawing scenarios.

        VirtualSurfaceImageSource is used for large-scale virtualized content. This is targeted toward apps that require panning and zooming of large content, like maps and document viewers.

        SwapChainBackgroundPanel targets full-screen, DirectX-focused scenarios. This is great for games and other low-latency, full-screen DirectX apps with a XAML overlay.

          Provide native support for XPath 2.0 or XSLT 2.0 in .NET framework, and of course extend it to SharePoint and other related technologies

          • Native multi-editing (multiple cursors and selections) support

            Multiple selections/cursors in Sublime Text is by far the most useful editor feature I have in my toolbox. Using search and replace in Visual Studio is slow and unwieldy in comparison and I find myself frequently copying blocks of text into Sublime Text just to perform versatile edits using multiple cursors, after which I copy the result back into Visual Studio.

            A future version of Visual Studio would win huge points with this feature alone.

            • Enable HLSL, DirectX and graphics development toolset for the C# language.

              Visual Studio only provides hlsl compilation tools for C++ projects, while C# projects which also use hlsl are left without this facility. This is a glaring inconsistency in the tools provided to each language. C# is meant to be a first-class language yet the DirectX tools which are built in to Visual Studio are not equally provided to C#, this is an unnecessary and arbitrary limitation.

              Developing DirectX applications with C# is becoming easier and there are now more tools than ever to work with this combination of technologies, including SlimDX and SharpDX, both fully capable managed DirectX frameworks (wrappers).…

              • Reduce overall build time and provide better feedback on the progress in the UI.

                Building currently completely blocks the UI, and no progress is shown. Just showing a responsive, non-blocking UI windows which shows progress and has a working cancel button would be a great addition.

                • Support .editorconfig

                  It would be awesome if Visual Studio supported .editorconfig files like so many other editors and IDEs.

                  "EditorConfig helps developers define and maintain consistent coding styles between different editors and IDEs. The EditorConfig project consists of a file format for defining coding styles and a collection of text editor plugins that enable editors to read the file format and adhere to defined styles. EditorConfig files are easily readable and they work nicely with version control systems."

                  You can read more about it at http://editorconfig.org/

                  • Fix it so that .NET apps can access HTTP thru authenticating proxy server by default

                    If you run a .NET app that needs to talk to the web, and you're behind an authenticating proxy server, then that app will fail to talk to the web.

                    Internet Explorer and Google Chrome work, Visual Studio and loads of other Microsoft apps will work. They can all talk to the web. But every .NET-based app or website I've ever seen will fail.

                    The implications of this are profound. I've seen umpteen forum posts over the years where people are scratching their heads, wondering what's wrong. I've seen IT guys re-route their users thru special-case connections to the web,…

                    • Improve shared projects with global view

                      Shared projects are very useful, not only for universal apps development but also to share code between different apps/platforms, for example : Xamarin projects, code sharing between windows 8.1 and windows 10 projects or between to similar apps (6tag and 6sec for example), etc...

                      But we can perhaps improve it, with a new way to show all files from a project, including files from shared project. See my illustration

                      • Use proper mouse wheel routing

                        In the year 2011, maybe it's finally time to handle WM_MOUSEWHEEL by the window under the cursor, rather than using the backward way of handling them in the window with focus?

                        • Make data accessible via APIs for custom processing

                          Application Insights sounds cool but I can't imagine having all my data locked up behind a portal without an ability to programmatically access it or at least download it for offline processing. I'm sure the portal is awesome but I'm also sure that there will be project-specific types of insight I need to get out of this data which the portal won't sufficiently support. Making data accessible outside the portal lets you get around that concern while continuing to improve the product.

                            We’re starting the detailed planning for API access to Application Insights data now. Please reply to this UserVoice topic with as many specific scenarios as you can, since this will help guide our design. For example what data visualization tools or platforms do you use or would like to use with Application Insights data, what sort of analysis or solution do you have in mind to build, etc.
                            Thank you

                          • Switch to Clang

                            Why?

                            Because it compiles code faster on large code bases.
                            Because it is more C++11 compliant.
                            Because it will be updated with fixes in a timely manner.
                            Because it will require less of your maintenance.
                            Because you can contribute back to it to make it even better.
                            Because you can build tools out of it like Intellisense, static analysis, etc.
                            Because MSFT can focus on Visual Studio UI and other elements that make it a nice IDE.
                            Because this is what C++ developers would prefer (non-biased opinion here :P ).
                            Because code portability is important in this platform diverse world.

                            • save text files with the newline convention present in the file when opened

                              The Visual Studio text file editor has an "advanced save" option that allows me to choose a particular format to save to, every time I save a file.
                              However, 99% of the time, the right thing to do is to save the file using whatever convention was present when the file was originally opened. Thus, if I open a file with LF-style line termination, new lines I add should be terminated with LF, and the file should be saved as LF-terminated. If I open a file with CRLF convention, new lines I *** should be terminated with CRLF, and it…

                                The current Webbrowser in WPF is only a wrapper around the IE WebBrowser Control. It would be great to have a native WPF Webbrowser Control.

                                • Feature Request: Local Fields within Properties

                                  A simple property in C#:
                                  int MyProperty
                                  {
                                  get
                                  {
                                  return _myProperty;
                                  }
                                  set
                                  {
                                  _myProperty = value;
                                  }
                                  }
                                  private int _myProperty = 42;

                                  Now, imagine the requirement appears that the code must be documented using the /// conventions.

                                  /// <summary>MyProperty is wonderful...</summary>
                                  int MyProperty
                                  {
                                  get
                                  {
                                  return _myProperty;
                                  }
                                  set
                                  {
                                  _myProperty = value;
                                  }
                                  }
                                  /// <summary>I don't want to document this but I'll get a diagnostic if I don't.</summary>
                                  private int _myProperty = 42;

                                  It's too bad that
                                  /// <summary>MyProperty is wonderful...</summary>
                                  int MyProperty

                                  set …

                                  • Faster geometry rendering

                                    When we need to visualize very detailed vector graphics wpf is pretty useless. Even the basic transformations, such as pan/zoom take a lot of time (using RenderTransform or GeometryTransform).
                                    Pure Direct3D handles it very well, and that's what I would expect from WPF (the geometry is static and frozen).

                                    • Provide integrated JavaScript debugging in Firefox and Google Chrome browsers

                                      Currently, integrated JavaScript debugging with Visual Studio is only possible with Internet Explorer. Even though you can do a bit of JavaScript debugging with external tools in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, the experience for debugging is not nearly as good as the integrated JavaScript debugging experience available with Internet Explorer. However, JavaScript errors often cause the IE browser to crash, thus making it very difficult to provide a great JavaScript debugging experience with Visual Studio. Therefore, Microsoft should provide integrated Visual Studio debugging experiences with Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome as they are the most popular alternative browsers in…

                                      • Add date time picker control to Windows 8 Metro XAML

                                        date time picker control is a must have control for many apps. It's missing in current Windows 8 Metro XMAL.

                                        • VB.Net should be fully supported in ASP.Net VNext , MVC 6

                                          Yes I do web development and Yes I am a VB !

                                          So I was horified to read this on the VNext Page on Gitthub "We have no VB support in the work for vNext."

                                          I Sure urge you to to start some planning about the support of VB.Net in ASP.Net VNext ,,, as Yes I currenty use MVC 5.2.3 in my production sites and hope to be at least able to upgrade to newer versions in the future , in my favorite coding language wich is VB.Net .

                                          I want support for VB.Net in all new webtech just as…
