I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Include Pex and Moles with all Visual Studio editions

Include Pex and Moles with all editions of Visual Studio including Professional edition rather than being restricted to developers with Premium or Ultimate editions of Visual Studio. This will allow all Visual Studio developers to leverage the capabilities of the Moles mocking library and the additional feedback for Unit Testing available with Pex.

    • Organize project XML files to reduce 3-way merge conflicts

If the project XML file contents were simply ordered, for instance alphabetically like a default file system view, it would drastically reduce the number of merge conflicts that edits cause.

Currently we see items added at the same spot in the file (so there is SOME order happening) with no relation other than time, causing a merge conflict that's completely avoidable. If an order was applied, it would make most 3-way merges automatic and/or a lot less work.

      • Make System.Data available to Metro style apps

Although, it seems clear that some of the decisions with the "Metro" apps are built so that apps will be able to go between devices, I would like to see the System.Data namespace supported in them. An example, you want to connect to a "local" SQL Express database without having to run a middle tier web-site or application that can talk to the database. Why shouldn't a Metro app run on a desktop be able to connect in the same way that a WinForms app can? The framework was supposed to abstract us from hardware and other changes yet as…

        • Support a JavaScript Project type in Visual Studio

Please provide a new project type in Visual Studio for developing JavaScript components.

The new project type could have the following features:

          - Contains .js, .css, and .html files.
          - Represents a complete UI component - i.e. a module or widget.
          - Runs JSLint or JSHint on build and reports any errors and violations.
          - The build ouput is minified JavaScript and CSS; there should be options for specifying a minifier.
          - The build output should also output any HTML files (as ASP.Net partial views).
          - The new project type permits adding references to other JavaScript projects.
          - Intellisense is…

            • Make (editing) Typing/Scrolling more responsive

There is a visible lag between the moment you press a key and the moment this translates into a character on the screen. Things like Go To Definition, and scrolling, can hang for several seconds.

It appears to get worse over time as you work in the editor.

                • Use proper mouse wheel routing

In the year 2011, maybe it's finally time to handle WM_MOUSEWHEEL by the window under the cursor, rather than using the backward way of handling them in the window with focus?

                    • Store per-project source formatting settings with project properties

I wish it were possible to define per-project editor settings that affect formatting and writing style: tab size, use tabs/spaces, autoindent and so on.

Because, different solutions (or even projects in one solution) can have different coding styles or conventions.

Having to poke in several tabs of environment settings every time as I switch projects is a major annoyance.

Actually the formatting settings are not private user preferences; they are part of a project and should be stored in source sontrol, so that the next person that takes on the code automatically gets the proper settings.

                      • In VS 2013, allow ability to run the "Change Authentication" wizard AFTER project is created

VS 2013 has a "Change Authentication" feature invoked when you create a project.

You cannot run it standalone and worse of all you cannot run it after the project has been created.

Consider e.g. having a VS 2012 project and wanting to upgrade to VS 2013 and use AAD instead of ADFS.

Not a new project so can't use the "Change Authentication" wizard. Never used AAD before so no idea what the WIF constructs are!

Or wanting to migrate a build from Test to Prod. You do not want to manualy update the web.config, figure out the certificate thumbprint etc.

                        • Enable HLSL, DirectX and graphics development toolset for the C# language.

Visual Studio only provides hlsl compilation tools for C++ projects, while C# projects which also use hlsl are left without this facility. This is a glaring inconsistency in the tools provided to each language. C# is meant to be a first-class language yet the DirectX tools which are built in to Visual Studio are not equally provided to C#, this is an unnecessary and arbitrary limitation.

Developing DirectX applications with C# is becoming easier and there are now more tools than ever to work with this combination of technologies, including SlimDX and SharpDX, both fully capable managed DirectX frameworks (wrappers).…

We added support for Cross Browser testing with VS 2012 Update 1. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudioalm/archive/2012/10/30/introducing-cross-browser-testing-with-coded-ui-tests.aspx

For MTM scenarios, you would need to import action recordings from MTM into a Coded UI Test and change browser type to the desired one.

I would like to know if this satisfies the needs of folks on this thread and I can close this to release votes or if people are specifically looking for the ability to specify browser type from within MTM.

                            • Provide Better DirectX support in WPF

These DirectX support classes are new in WinRT / Metro. Please provide them in WPF.

SurfaceImageSource enables full composition of DirectX content into a XAML app. This allows drawing DirectX content into the XAML visual tree, useful for complex image effects, data visualization, and other immediate-mode drawing scenarios.

VirtualSurfaceImageSource is used for large-scale virtualized content. This is targeted toward apps that require panning and zooming of large content, like maps and document viewers.

SwapChainBackgroundPanel targets full-screen, DirectX-focused scenarios. This is great for games and other low-latency, full-screen DirectX apps with a XAML overlay.

                              • Work item control that allows a selection of multiple values

Having a multi-select control that work in VS, Web access, that is easy to query and populates the reporting cube would helpfull in many scenarios.

The current work around (ex: http://witcustomcontrols.codeplex.com/) is far from empassing all the above requirements

Now, imagine the requirement appears that the code must be documented using the /// conventions.

                                  It's too bad that

                                  • New Work Item Control: Checkbox

Creating string fields with "Yes" and "No" (or "True" or "False", or "1" and "0") as allowed values, is a viable "workaround" for a Yes/No field - but still, a real checkbox control would make it even better.

btw: Checkboxes are a Windows control introduced from the very beginning (Windows 1 actually, I checked. ;)

                                    • Basic Refactoring Functionality needed

Right now when I want to make a section of code a method or make some simple refactoring, its not in the box. Rename is there, but its local to the page and doesn't go deep enough. The top 5-10 refactoring types should come in the box.

Merged from another idea: Improve the refactoring tools like code generation, rename, etc.

                                      • Allow 3rd party Extensions (vsix) in Visual Studio Express editions

As a developer of a commercial extension for Visual Studio, I was (and still am, at some level) against supporting non-paying customers.

However, over the years I came to realize that you get more flies with honey, and I now believe Microsoft should allow installing Visual Studio Extensions (vsix) in Express editions.

People use Express editions for different reason - some won't pay for their development tools out of spite, others just can't afford the next (basic) SKU, or an MSDN subscription.

Yet there are many people who create and maintain free and open source extensions for Visual Studio. While…
