  1. String interpolations in C#

    Enable string interpolations in C#.

The interpolation should happen during compile time, so there are no performance penalties paid during runtime.

The Boo implemenation is a good place to start:
    http://boo.codehaus.org/String+Interpolation

    These should work:

    var a = "Now is $(DateTime.Now)."
    var b = "Tomorrow will be $(DateTime.Now.AddDays(1))"
var c = "This list has $(list.Count()) items."

    • Hide Work Item Types (WITs) based on permission/security group

Within a team project, you should be able to specify who is allowed to create a specific Work Item Type.

A user should only see Work Item Types in the "New Work Item" menu (Team Explorer, TEE, Team Web Access), that the user is allowed to create.

      • Bring back the MPI Cluster Debugger

In Visual Studio 2010 there is an MPI Cluster Debugger that allows us to debug MPI applications.
It seems that this feature has gone, so please bring it back to make it easier to develop MPI applications on Windows.

Please bring us back to the good old days where all docs available off-line were available to download... if not free for all at least for msdn subscribers.

          • Support a JavaScript Project type in Visual Studio

Please provide a new project type in Visual Studio for developing JavaScript components.

The new project type could have the following features:

            - Contains .js, .css, and .html files.
            - Represents a complete UI component - i.e. a module or widget.
            - Runs JSLint or JSHint on build and reports any errors and violations.
            - The build ouput is minified JavaScript and CSS; there should be options for specifying a minifier.
            - The build output should also output any HTML files (as ASP.Net partial views).
            - The new project type permits adding references to other JavaScript projects.
            - Intellisense is…

              • Resolve Airspace iusse to full integrate OpenGL inside WPF

There are many programmers and company that develop applications based on geometrical kernels that use OpenGL for drawing (like CAD/CAM applications) often they have an old MFC application, and to pass to a modern view for their applications and give a new user experience for the user they could make new WPF interfaces very quickly but they can't rewrite an entire kernel to pass from OpenGL to DirectX, so often they prefer to remain with MFC without pass to WPF. This could be a very special thing to have the possibility to use OpenGL fully supported by WPF, without airspace…

                • Include SQL BI tools in the latest VS version

SQL Server 2012 has followed its predecessors as the BI Tools released again with the previous version of VS instead of the latest one.

Please, release the BI tools with the latest VS version and include it in SQL Server. Be the IDE really integrated again (or finally)!

                  • support project.json/global.json for all project types, not just ASP.NET

As demonstrated at TechEd, ASP.NET vNext projects support a new Nuget mechanism whereby packages are organized in a by-project project.json file. Also of particular interest is the ability to override the package with local sources in a solution file called global.json, which facilitates a much smoother way to contribute to projects outside the solution. Please do this for all project types.

                    • Store per-project source formatting settings with project properties

I wish it were possible to define per-project editor settings that affect formatting and writing style: tab size, use tabs/spaces, autoindent and so on.

Because, different solutions (or even projects in one solution) can have different coding styles or conventions.

Having to poke in several tabs of environment settings every time as I switch projects is a major annoyance.

Actually the formatting settings are not private user preferences; they are part of a project and should be stored in source sontrol, so that the next person that takes on the code automatically gets the proper settings.

                      • C++ CLI support for optional parameters for using in C#

in C++ CLI is possible to define an optional parameter like

public void ProvaDefaults([Optional, DefaultParameterValue(true)] bool value)

but in this way the compiler don't use the DefaultParameterValue for setting the correct default value in the metadata (II.15.4.1.4 The .para m directive) that is visible in C#

so in C# the deault parameter is visible but only with the system default value (in the sample reported it is false instead of the wanted true)

As I understand it these attributes are limited to use in WinRT/Metro and now with update 2, Windows Phone 8. It would be very helpful to be able to use them in all test projects e.g.

                          [DataRow("a", "b")]

                          • Use Nuget to install most of the components

Visual Studio could be a lightweight shell with only the basic project templates installed. Whenever you then need to add new template such as Windows Phone, Silverlight, Azure, ... you could create an empty project and use NuGet to install all the extra files and UI to get it to work. And as is the case with NuGet, this install is relative to the solution/project that you are using. NuGet all of these artifacts from an official package server, and link it locally to the solution.

This would be benificial for us 'consultancy' folk to keep VS to a minimal…

In general, simply invest in improving the 3D framework. Specifically, add the ability (for users) to create and instantiate high level 3D elements in xaml (e.g. allow Cube, Cylinder, Sphere, etc. to be "native" WPF objects).

                              • Add option to Enable/Disable Deployment inside Microsoft Test Manager (MTM) TestSettings as in the local TestSettings

I need to run test inside MTM, and I need to add a TestSettings configuration to configure some options, but I need to disable deplyment as I need to run test in the build location.
Using visual studio testsettings there is a check in the deplyment section to disable deployment, but inside MTM testsettings options there is no such option, there is only the possibility to add folders, not to disable deplyment

                                • Make System.Data available to Metro style apps

Although, it seems clear that some of the decisions with the "Metro" apps are built so that apps will be able to go between devices, I would like to see the System.Data namespace supported in them. An example, you want to connect to a "local" SQL Express database without having to run a middle tier web-site or application that can talk to the database. Why shouldn't a Metro app run on a desktop be able to connect in the same way that a WinForms app can? The framework was supposed to abstract us from hardware and other changes yet as…

                                  • In VS 2013, allow ability to run the "Change Authentication" wizard AFTER project is created

VS 2013 has a "Change Authentication" feature invoked when you create a project.

You cannot run it standalone and worse of all you cannot run it after the project has been created.

Consider e.g. having a VS 2012 project and wanting to upgrade to VS 2013 and use AAD instead of ADFS.

Not a new project so can't use the "Change Authentication" wizard. Never used AAD before so no idea what the WIF constructs are!

Or wanting to migrate a build from Test to Prod. You do not want to manualy update the web.config, figure out the certificate thumbprint etc.

                                    • Bring back support for Smart Device Extensions

Microsoft caused outrage when without warning or explanation they dropped support for the Smart Device Extensions. Meaning that there is no support for both managed (Compact Framework) and unmanaged (C++) development for the Windows CE platform.

Microsoft promised support would be added by the time VS2010 was released but then back tracked, to date the official line is use VS2008. This product is nearly 4 years old, it is becoming increasingly more impractical to use VS2008 solely for the purpose of developing for the Windows CE platform. Many development teams invested heavily in the benefit of having a single UI…

                                      • Organize project XML files to reduce 3-way merge conflicts

If the project XML file contents were simply ordered, for instance alphabetically like a default file system view, it would drastically reduce the number of merge conflicts that edits cause.

Currently we see items added at the same spot in the file (so there is SOME order happening) with no relation other than time, causing a merge conflict that's completely avoidable. If an order was applied, it would make most 3-way merges automatic and/or a lot less work.

                                        • Include Pex and Moles with all Visual Studio editions

Include Pex and Moles with all editions of Visual Studio including Professional edition rather than being restricted to developers with Premium or Ultimate editions of Visual Studio. This will allow all Visual Studio developers to leverage the capabilities of the Moles mocking library and the additional feedback for Unit Testing available with Pex.
