I suggest you ...

Virtual PC with everything preinstalled VS11, SQL2012, etc.

I would like to provide feedback for pre-release versions but there are many obvious reasons I do not want to install the pre-release versions of Visual Studio 11. It is very time consuming, it can pollute the developer's environment, uninstall bugs, etc. Think about the time it takes to download and install all the components and multiply that by the number of developers. That's a lot of redundant time.

If you could provide an option to download a Virtual PC file that contains Windows 8, VS11, SQL2012 preinstalled, etc. We would be able to provide the feedback and ideas on IDE usablity much more quickly. You may want to provide various preinstalled combinations of versions of windows, sql server, VS 11, etc.

I'm talking about Virtual PC.. the workstation version, not the server version. I don't have a server. Lightswtich wanted a 64bit server. I don't have that at home and we don't have the playground at work. I can't risk my development workstation being polluted with beta software. This is why I wish there was Windows 8 Developer Edition that had some sort of Virtual PC built in where we could have our PC development work separated from our daily production work and our personal software, files and photos, etc. I just want to flip a switch to safely and easily attach a virtual machine that has everything I need to code and not destroy my personal stuff. The screen backgrounds could be different to provide feedback to which environment people were working in. Then I'd like to be able to quickly reset that Dev enviornment back to it's original clean state. Hope that helps your imagination with getting developers more productive with Windows. When you think about it, things haven't improved much...

There is value to allowing people to install all the components (SQL2012, Windows, etc) themselves because they may help you catch installer issues. However, if Microsoft is also able to create VPC files, they may gain a lot more feedback from people like myself who don't have the time to install everything but have a lot of ideas and would love to contribute with the little time they do have.
