Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has added color in several broad reaching icon categories. We classified the icons we focused on into three sets: icons which represent common actions, icons which indicate code hierarchy, and icons that provide some kind of notification. By utilizing a systematic and broadly applicable approach to color use we are better able to effectively convey critical meaning or affiliation through color, to attract attention through color, and to improve scan-ability through color. This approach translates into color being applied to ~80% of standard toolbar and debug toolbar icons, ~75% of code hierarchy icons, and 100% of active notifications.

Based upon the design goals outlined above and design decisions reflected in the existing scheme for each of the core icon sets we will continue to apply and extend our approach to icon colorization as we move forward. As…

Andy, what does iOS / Windows Phone have to do with Visual Studio, which is a desktop program? ...

The point here is that the Metro look makes no sense being forced into a developer tool with utter disregard for usability and integration with the OS look.

"not objectively bad"? This is not a matter of taste - there are all kinds of usability studies showing the brain identifies colored 3D icons more easily than grey blobs; that mixed case is easier to parse than upper case by using the general shape of the word rather than having to read its individual letters. Besides, disrespecting the user's choice of OS look *is* objectively bad.

Here is the next item to vote on, if the Visual Studio team in its infinite wisdom doesn't decide to close it as well for bogus reasons: http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/3086061-bring-back-the-visual-in-visual-studio

I love this approach to "listening to feedback", it's much like democracy: let people bark but happily ignore them; and when an entity becomes too vocal (like this uservoice item), shut it down.

If only Suzanne Hansen and the previous design team were still around, rather than this new set of clueless people...

Read her comment from 2009 on <https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/499602/horrible-user-interface>, it's englightening. Quoting some parts:

"Not every product has the same users and therefore the same UI is not appropriate everywhere"
"Microsoft has such a wide range of products, it would be impossible to do one visual appearance that is a "one size fits all." For example, it would be virtually impossible to use a single UI design for Zune, XBox, Visual Studio and Bing."

I also recall comments from her praising the use of colors in the VS 2010 GUI, though I can't find them.

Surely there are still sane people within Microsoft. I wish they'd speak up in this matter instead of letting their company and our great Visual Studio go down the drain because of foolish marketing decisions done in the name of "consistency" and "improving the brand".

      Winfried, you are completely wrong.

Brian Harry has clearly explained on page 3 of the comments at <http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2012/09/12/visual-studio-update-this-fall.aspx?PageIndex=3> that this design has been imposed on the Visual Studio team, and that their hands are tied in this regard. This is not made to make sense, to be more productive or anything - it's only in order to improve the consistency of the Microsoft brand, even if that has to come at a certain cost (in this case: reduced usability and increased ugliness). There is absolutely no rational explanation here; only politics.

Yet another political decision done in the name of "improving the brand" and "consistency" at the expense of usability.

Several parts of MSDN have already been steadily getting destroyed by this design trend (eg forum list that has no delimitation whatsoever, a total mess). It's too bad this is going away as well; will have to rely on local doc & a viewer to get a proper treeview back.

            Cathy Sullivan,

It has been explained a countless times why that theme editor is extremely far from covering every wrongdoing in this GUI; off the top of my head, I can think of: icon colors; delimitations between toolbars; chrome of the main window that doesn't respect the Windows theme, making it impossible to distinguish which VS window is active. And so on and so forth; the various other bugs in which the theme editor has been suggested and rightfully rejected host a ton of comments far better expressed than mine.

However, that is not the issue here. The point of this feedback item is not specifically the GUI changes (many other items handle them) but the people and dubious motivations behind them.

What is especially hard to swallow in this ordeal is that everyone kept telling you how wrong you were in every single beta, but you just kept pushing the changes universally disliked. I have never seen such an amount of negative comments about a particular topic in VS-related blogs.

On top of that, none of it makes any sense from a usability point of view, which is what developers care about. These changes are political, aimed at improving some sort of brand; but they utterly disregard usability, pleasure of use, beauty, OS integration.

              Updated Status: 7/2/2013

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has increased color and contrast use within the user interface while continuing to focus on giving the content you are creating and editing visual prominence. We’ve utilized the feedback you gave us to help refine our approach to color and contrast within three main areas: 1) we added color to icons and reduced line weights to improve icon scan-ability and to better communicate icon meaning and categorization; 2) we added line work and raised contrast levels to increase visual separation between screen regions; 3) we included a built-in “Blue” theme option at product first launch to better support user choice.

In keeping with these three areas we have made many changes to the Visual Studio 2013 built-in themes. In high utilization and icon intensive areas of the product, such as common toolbar actions and…

                  Doug Turnure,

How could you be ******** enough not to realize that by "theme", people are not talking only about colors but also about icons, borders, spacing, the chrome, etc?
