Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has added color in several broad reaching icon categories. We classified the icons we focused on into three sets: icons which represent common actions, icons which indicate code hierarchy, and icons that provide some kind of notification. By utilizing a systematic and broadly applicable approach to color use we are better able to effectively convey critical meaning or affiliation through color, to attract attention through color, and to improve scan-ability through color. This approach translates into color being applied to ~80% of standard toolbar and debug toolbar icons, ~75% of code hierarchy icons, and 100% of active notifications.

Based upon the design goals outlined above and design decisions reflected in the existing scheme for each of the core icon sets we will continue to apply and extend our approach to icon colorization as we move forward. As…

Please make VS2010 theme with normal icons, and white/black themes with "abstractionism art"-icons.

It's a lie. Not even one _full_-color icons was restored. All icons are maximum two-colored, dull, lean, and hardly distinguishable.
Need VS2010 theme with classic true-color icons.

TL; DR – We’re working on it and we’re super excited about it.

            Hey all,

Just shooting you all an update on this since I can see some of you are wondering if we forgot about this issue. Unfortunately, with UserVoice we can only mark a suggestion as “Under Review”, “Declined”, or “Complete”; there’s no “Planned” or “In Progress” state which is why this suggestion is still marked “Under Review” even though we’ve been working on enabling this for a while.

            So here’s where we stand.
            1) We want this to work as much as you do. It’s not under review – it’s in progress.
            2) We figured out how to make it work; it simply requires rewriting everything.
            3) We’re rewriting everything.
            4) Rewriting everything takes a lot of time and a lot of testing.

You see, the Immediate and Watch windows are powered by this thing called…

              Updated Status: 7/2/2013

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has increased color and contrast use within the user interface while continuing to focus on giving the content you are creating and editing visual prominence. We’ve utilized the feedback you gave us to help refine our approach to color and contrast within three main areas: 1) we added color to icons and reduced line weights to improve icon scan-ability and to better communicate icon meaning and categorization; 2) we added line work and raised contrast levels to increase visual separation between screen regions; 3) we included a built-in “Blue” theme option at product first launch to better support user choice.

In keeping with these three areas we have made many changes to the Visual Studio 2013 built-in themes. In high utilization and icon intensive areas of the product, such as common toolbar actions and…

Maybe cause of all this f****try with monochrome indistinguishable icons is - that ms developers unlearned how to correctly show images? In WPF when image scaled or just shifted on non-integer quantity of pixels, it looks blurry (try scroll horizontally some VS toolwindows with wpf trees, and you'll see this effect). Maybe monochrome icons "invented" because of incapability to show crisp images? (With monochrome it is not such noticeable).

From the start, VS2012 does NOT have consistency with win8!
              Because win8 doesn't have "all black&white" icons.

White theme is too bright and very strain eyes. Need more tranquil background color (in vs2010 is perfect).
Black theme is not usable for people with non-ideal eyesight, bright letters on dark background looks blurry.
No borderlines between zones - what idiot invented this?!
And ICONS - they are indistinguishable, give back normal ones.

Microsoft reoriented itself, from skilled developers - to imbeciles from social networks. This design is that they would like. They would pay only $9.99 per copy of something with UI similar to f***book, but there are millions of them.
Such market strategy is at least understandable. But why not leave an option of manually improve this horrendous UI, for those who are not from a "new prioritized customer" category?

              >They are not as important because when I start typing 'new' in the quick launch my options are suddenly recuced
Main menu is not important. It is only several dozens items on constant places. Important are solution explorer with 100500 items, changing every day. Also intellisense, search results, and other user data.

Of course, this has meaning only for those who work with projects more complex than hello-world.

              >losing market share
Visual studio exists not mainly for profit (it's main role is to promote windows, sql server, etc). Some "effective managers" want to cancel this project (to get bonuses for reduction of costs), and they need to display it as non-popular among users. This is easily achieved by disfigure UI.

              exaltingexalting commented  ·   ·  Delete…

All this is just another example of widespread technological degradation. (It is not only in software engineering, it is also in many other branches of technology). New generation of designers are not such talented, can't maintain what previous generation created, and fall back to primitive (to the level for what they have enough skill). Compete with VS2010-level - nowadays just nobody can, even if want.
