Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide our customers one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. loosen c# langauge to allow static functions in namespace and port python math libraries to .net

    personally, I think python and javascript sucks as a language... I wish somebody would find a way to map the python and javascript api's into .net so we could get rid of them and use a real program language for everything...

    if you have to make c# a little less object oriented and more functional to do that...its worth messing the c# language up to do it just to get rid of the sucky python and javascript languages that everybody loves to hate...

    biggest flaw of c# is that it doesn't suck enough to complete with sucky languages like python…

    • In c# string.Format is used so much it be great to have it preset like Foreach does.

      So you time you enter string.Format space space and it prefills
      Ie string.Format (“”,);

      Also have a super command so you don’t have to type string.Format
      Have like stFor space space then do Ie string.Format (“”,);

      • Allow Microsoft Word style commenting in C#

        Please allow inserting comment on a specific location (like a ballon shows up on the right side of MS Word) rather than adding // at every line. It will be easier to give details or purpose of code right on it explaining its custom details on the separate window on the right side just like MS Word.

        • Create or Update the template, ASP.Net Core + Angular

          This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
          https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351722/create-or-update-the-template-aspnet-core-angular.html
          Currently we can use the template, ASP.Net Core 2.1 + Angular5.

          When Angular is updated 6 from 5, change many files in framework.
          So, we can't build ASP.Net Core 2.1 + Angular 6 without executiong ng migration update command and rewriting json files. Or get old Angular-Cli and their dependences.

          Pls. Create new Template for ASP.NET Core + Angular6 ., or Updating the Template.

            I would like to program in C # with Wpf, but the code in visual form as the nodes, so we could have greater freedom to assemble the code more efficiently and with fewer analysis complications, making the reanalysis of the data highly operative and easy to understand. for non-experienced users having a better free-form order and leaving the writing purely to a new evolution something like the legos that serve to assemble anything quickly due to their prefabricated forms

              • Cast to var

                I would like to be able to do this:

                foo = (var)bar;

                which would mean casting bar to the declared type of foo.

                    • Allow partial constructors in C#

                      For auto-generated code sometimes it would be useful to to add an additional constructor in a partial class. An example I struck recently was trying to add some additional constructor code to an EF generated class where I didn't have control over the generated code.

                      An obvious problem is invocation order and I'm not sure of what would be best but perhaps some modifiers could be added to the front of the method:

                      [InvokeFirst] // Must be first, error on multiple definitions
                      [InvokeHigher]
                      [InvokeDefault] // Default when not specified
                      [InvokeLower]
                      [InvokeLast] // Must be last, error on multiple definitions

                      The…

                      • Automatically remove unused classes, methods, properties, assembly references from final app/exe

                        I wish that the C# compiler would automatically remove (strip out) unused classes, methods, properties, and assembly references from final app/exe (when compiled for Release not Debug).

                        If you use a large class library in an app, but for example the app uses only 20% of the library, then the entire library is included in the final app/exe anyway. I wish that the final compiled app/exe contained only the classes that are truly used in the app, not the entire contents of every class library that I reference in an app.

                        In a rare case where you need to stop…

                          • Allow Conditional attribute also to non void methods

                            Currently it's possible to use
                            [Conditional("CONDITION")]
                            only with void function. So we have to use #if with non void function to get a default value.
                            Please, extend the attribute in order to return a specified default value or null for reference type.

                              • Use of unassigned local variable

                                If a Boolean is guarding both the initialization and use of a local variable, VS should attempt to recognize that. There are other similar circumstances that have been introduced to VS recently.

                                This actually leads to improved code. Forcing a var to be initialized even when it ultimately won't be used ends up blocking VS's ability to alert the developer when the var really is being used when it shouldn't.

                                Example:

                                public int Test(bool flag)
                                {
                                int value;
                                if (flag) value = 0;
                                int result = 0;
                                if (flag) result = value + 1;
                                return result;
                                }

                                "value" should not…

                                • Fallthrough keyword inside switch statement

                                  switch (0)
                                  {
                                  case 0: Console.WriteLine("Case: 0"); fallthrough;
                                  case 1: Console.WriteLine("Case: 1");
                                  case 2: Console.WriteLine("Case: 2");
                                  default: Console.WriteLine("Case: default");
                                  }

                                  /*Output:
                                  Case: 0
                                  Case: 1
                                  */

                                  The use of [goto label;] easily creates code spaghetti, whereas [break;] after each [case:] is merely syntactic sugar. Because the [fallthrough;] keyword is directly preceding the next [case:], the incidence of unintentional fallthroughs is much lower. To move a [case:] with a [fallthrough;] one can use [goto label;]. However, the need to change [fallthrough;] to [goto label;] will prompt refactoring.

                                      Allow properties in ref and out parameters.

                                      Example:

                                      Increase(ref MyNumber);
                                      }

                                      private void Increase(ref int number)

                                      }

                                      • Make it easier to develop "Hello World"

                                        The standard install should include everything someone needs to develop a "Hello World" app with ease.

                                        • 單元測試, 可否顯示錯誤的行數?

                                          顯示:
                                          Message: Assert.AreEqual 失敗。 預期: <268>。實際: <0>。

                                          Assert.AreEqual(x1, 0);
                                          Assert.AreEqual(x2, 0);
                                          ...
                                          可否顯示錯誤的行數, 讓使用者知道x2這一行錯誤
