I wanted to update the status to make sure you know that we hear you. This isn’t straightforward to deliver for obvious reasons: Visual Studio installs a disparate variety of tools, runtimes and SDKs, many of which come from third parties or other parts of Microsoft. We recognize that developers would love to see something lighter and while we have nothing new to announce at this stage, we are spending a lot of time thinking about how we can improve Visual Studio installation.

      Thanks for the feedback!

    • Please make ISO files for Visual Studio 2017

Creating our own offline layout installer by downloading multiple files instead of a single ISO is messy, and is a step backwards from Visual Studio 2015. The installer too, is really slow. Please provide ISO files for VS 2017 for convenient installation on multiple computers that have slow or no internet connection. Thank you.

Thanks for the many comments on this topic. We are listening…

On behalf of the Visual Studio team, I wanted to share a few responses to some of the questions and concerns raised, in the spirit of sharing with transparency the reasons that led us to the current installer options.

Visual Studio 2017 is a huge product, because we support so many types of development: from Android to UWP to C++ to Unity to Linux. If we were to still offer a ‘full’ install, it would come in at over 50GB. That’s one huge ISO image!

We surveyed hundreds of people during the previews and RCs, and people told us that they had historically used an ISO for two reasons: (i) because they wanted to download once and create a network install for enterprise deployment; (ii) because they had a shaky internet connection and wanted to be sure they’d downloaded…

      • Allow users to install entirely to another hard drive

Allow a user to install *all* of Visual Studio to a drive other than the system drive. I have a very small SSD and find it infuriating that Visual Studio can only install a third to my mechanical drive and must install 4GB to my system drive.

We expect to make significant progress on this front in the upcoming release. There are some components which must be installed to the system drive for various reasons – for example, Windows hotfixes and .NET Framework releases. But we think we will be able to do a better job of honoring the chosen location in the next release.

To give some transparency into the design process, one interesting wrinkle to this problem is third-party components that we install. If you choose to install Visual Studio to (say) D:\VS, where should we install something like Git for Windows or the Android SDK (if you select those components)? Should we install them into a subdirectory of D:\VS, even though other apps may use them? And should we attempt to secure the directory? C:\Program Files is only writeable by admin users, which presents a security boundary to rogue apps. Tough choices…

          Thanks,…

          • Show current downloaded size and total downloaded size of individual components in VS installer

It would be helpful how much data being downloaded and how much is remaining within VS installer. This would allow to know how much further time installer would take and improve installer experience vastly.

            • Reduce amount of programs added to Programs and Features

It has always bugged me that when installing Visual Studio there are 40+ items added to the Programs and Features list in Windows.

While I understand that some are necessarily standalone programs (like all the different runtimes), there are many Visual Studio components added that are _only_ there for Visual Studio.

Examples include Service Packs, “Macro Tools”, “Prequisites” and especially all the language pack related items.

Looking at other products, like Office, you should be perfectly fine by combining everything into a single entry and configure all the compontents within a setup dialog.

This also applies to other components (which…

We’re making real progress against this area – slowly but surely. If you haven’t seen Visual Studio 2017 RC (or later) yet, check it out at http://visualstudio.com. We are eradicating many of the separate items that come from Microsoft, although we will continue to list third-party dependencies individually (for example, if I used the Visual Studio installer to get the Android SDK, we presume you might want to be able to uninstall that without relying on Visual Studio).

Let us know what you think… Thanks for the feedback, Tim Sneath | Visual Studio Team

              • Provide a custom offline installer package for vs 2017

I'm loving the flashy new UI for the web-install of VS 2017. As I often do not have access to really fast speed internet access (only ADSL 1 at home!) I would love to be able to choose my custom combination of components and have them all download at once initially and provide me with either a single installation file or (perhaps more practicably) an installer and an accompanying data store (archived or any format as you see fit).

Initially I would imagine the installers flow would be something like:

                1. Ask user if they want offline or online installation …

                • Stop installing a bunch of SQL server stuff

I don't do any SQL development. I didn't even check anything web development related, so we can't blame this on ASP.NET --- I did C++ and Windows 10 SDK only. And yet I get this?

                  • Why I still need an internet connection to Install VS after 30GB downloads?

Why are you guys being idiotic and still require an internet connection after asking user to download 30GB installer for VS2017?Are you purposely doing this or do guys have some kind of intent's to always see what other programmers are doing? This is both after downloading 30GB and the installer telling you to connect to the internet and when you start the installer again?

                    • Allow installation of Visual Studio from the Windows 10 Store app

Project Centennial has created a path for classic Windows desktop apps to move to the Windows Store. I would really like to have as many store apps as possible on my PC to avoid blasting files and registry entries all over the place. The new VS Installer is much improved, but this would help keep PC's pristine.

Add a setting to the installer for a dark theme, the new vs 2017 installer is too bright for me to use at night.

                        • Save and Load selected set of "Individual components" in installer

I am charged with determining the set of selected Individual components for our development group. Using the new VS 2017 installer, it would be wonderful if I could check all the necessary boxes on the Individual components tab, save those to a file and have team members import/load it when they go to install. That way we all use the same installation settings.

I would suggest I make an offline installer but the -layout option only downloads the content and doesn't allow me to pre-select anything when I launch vs_professional.exe

                          • Make the Visual Studio installer more customizable (more than VS 2015)

Let the user choose whether to install or not features such a Visual Basic or C#, and for which platform to develop. Although Visual Studio 2015 brought a good improvement in the setup process choices (hence the "Make the Visual Studio installer more customizable" idea, voted 1715 times, recently marked as completed) there is still a lot of room to do better. The Visual Studio 6 granularity was just perfect, why now there are so few choices? Why do users need to install the full .NET SDK if they are not going to do any .NET development? Why tools for…

                            • Make each Update of VS2017 downloadable

At the moment, only the latest Update of VS2017 (15.4) is downloadable, but I need the previous Updates (2 and 3) as well.

The reason is that I am in trouble with using the latest Update (15.4), so I have to roll it back to the Update 2.

Running the /layout command will download.. well, who knows how many GB (I'm up to 9.86GB after THREE DAYS of downloading via Microsoft's servers, and it's still not complete). I've been downloading the ISO for the last 30 minutes and the speeds have not gone over 120KB/sec - it stays around 30-45KB/sec the majority of the time. No, it's not my end. I can download a slackware torrent right this very minute and reach speeds nearing 3MB/sec - I know because I did it about 5 minutes ago. The issue is that you're slow, and you're…

                                  • VS2017: Support installation nickname for first instance

New installer provides a nickname option but only for the second and later installation stream. The initial installation is always nicknamed "VS2017". Should allow this name to be changed.

                                    • Visual Studio installer - add search

When I wan't to add a Component in the Installer modify dialog it would be easier to have a searchbox to help me find the one I wish to add.

                                      • Support .NET Core in Visual Studio 2017 without being necessary to install the whole web development package.

In Visual Studio 2015, tooling for .NET Core was available as a package, installed separately from the whole IDE.

However, Visual Studio 2017 RC has the option of installing the ".NET Core and Docker" workload. For developers that do not work with ASP.NET Core, this workload adds extra space to disk. So, I propose making a "Cross-platform development with .NET Core" workload, or something like that, but without web application development stuff.

                                        Thanks.

This is really good feedback. We’ve been reviewing what we do here. Right now, our plan is to merge the .NET Core features into the .NET desktop and .NET web workloads when the .NET Core tooling is no longer “preview-quality”. We would prefer not to silo it into a separate workload if possible, because we want it to be available to developers using the existing workloads. Interested to know what kinds of development you’re doing with .NET Core – are you running from the console?

At the same time, we also recognize that we need to keep trimming the size of the web tooling – that remains a work in progress.

One option for you is to install the .NET Core component specifically as an “individual component”, rather than as part of a workload. There’s a separate tab during installation to pick and choose…

                                        • Ability to create custom workloads for VS15 installer

It would be nice if a user could create a custom workload that they can load into the VS15 installer. This would allow users to help others install the necessary components for development easily, rather than being told to install X, Y and Z, a user could be given a customised workload that will have X, Y and Z already selected for the user.

I read through some blogs related to workloads and searched uservoice but could not find any mention of custom workloads being planned, close if this is a dupe :)

Thank you for this – it’s good feedback. We have it on our backlog (for after RTM), but we haven’t heard the request commonly enough from customers yet to know that this is a high-priority item (compared to other items on the backlog). Your UserVoice idea is great, and we’ll keep monitoring this thread to understand the scenario better.

Best wishes, Tim Sneath | Visual Studio Team
