Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide our customers one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. there is way too much stuff in intellisense

    intellisense tries to offer me everything but this means I have to wade through it all to get what I want. For example you include namespaces and class from libraries I use. I almost never want these over locals and class members

    • Put the TFS workspace in the titlebar, with the project

      I work with branches in the same workspace on occasion, and VS really likes to just show the project name. I cannot tell you how many times I've edited the wrong branch...would be easier if TFS would go the Git route and put hte workspace in the status bar.

        • Add right-click option to "copy full path [to clipboard]" for any item in the solution explorer

          Suppose I want the full path to a .csproj on the clipboard so that I can paste it into a cmd window and run commands on it. Today the process is tedious: right click the project and say "open in file explorer", then find the project again in explorer, shift-right-click the file, and choose "Copy Full Path".

          I should be able to get the full path to any file in the solution with one right-click.

          • VS IDE: Open Folder should support .gitignore or other means to exclude files from scanning

            Visual Studio 2017.7 Preview 3 seems to finally be stable enough to use with one of the projects I am working on. The project itself was probably created in VS2005/08 and currently consists of 20+Gb of data and source files (total count is 50K+ files), including build artifacts as everything is built in-source.
            From all these thousands of files the real source files are around 900. I have figured out that if I add a .gitignore file I can exclude all unnecessary files from the Solution View but Visual Studio still indexes all the files.
            It would be nice if…

            • copy local package reference

              Can we get 'copy local' and 'specific version' options back in the properties window for Package Reference style imports of Nuget packages? I guess this would need the package node to expand to individual files/assemblies (at least for copy local), but I'm ok with that.

              • store output window filter values in the cloud

                I hate (with a passion) having to go through every new VS installation (probably done 50 of them over the years) and in my Output window, unselect EVERY output filter option except for messages and exceptions. I would have hoped by now that either MS would decide the defaults are way too noisy (and no way MS picks good defaults...ever) or simply(!) store these settings in the cloud so that I feel like I'm actually getting some benefit from having to give VS my Windows Account info.

                • Don't close secondary windows in response to the last doc being closed.

                  The developer's placement of the main and secondary windows across one or more screens is actually significant independent of whether there's anything open in those windows. It the last doc is closed or if "close all docs" is selected, closing the docs themselves is correct but the windows should remain. They have their own "X" independent of the docs for a reason, and the developer can use that "X" is the developer really wants the window closed. Leave empty windows open and where there developer placed them so the developer can drag new docs into the window without having to…

                  • Allow 'Report a problem' links to be shared

                    I used 'Report a problem' from within the VS IDE. Now I've got a problem reported I want to share a link to it with colleagues who are also interested in a solution to it.

                    Can there be a way I can get a link to it or somehow share it with them so they can find and view it?

                    • Tell me when I do things the dumb way

                      You're adding a lot of good features. Too many for me to know about all of them, really. When you add a new usability feature, why not add a little heuristic watcher thingy that lets me know if I've manually done something that could have been done by a feature.

                      For example, the first N times I added a reference to a project that already exists in another project in the same solution, you could have told/reminded me about the copy and paste reference feature.

                      It wouldn't even have to be perfect. It wouldn't even have to be _close_. If…

                        • Visual Feedback for interface implementation

                          When a class implement an interface member, we whould be aware of it via a small visual feedback.

                          • Report any additional warnings between builds.

                            Working on large legacy code bases, it's common for there to be a large number of warnings. Although these SHOULD be addressed, it is what it is. But, it is possible to fix issues with any new code that is added or changes to existing code. However, it's not clear when NEW warnings appear.

                            I recommend VS have a way to show any new warnings that appear between builds.

                            • Allow image in code.

                              Allow to insert from file or paste directly images into the code at the location of the cursor. This idea was requested a couple of time but sadly this system doesn't reach every developer in the world as a consequence you are closing relevant ideas because not enough vote.

                              This idea will eventually be closed the same way. Hope for many people to vote since adding an image as a comment is much more informative than trying to paste comment from somewhere which isn't formatted correctly and yes schema is more informative too.

                                  比如(Ctrl shift + 用来展开代码、Ctrl Shift - 用来折叠代码)等等。

                                    • Add code style rule for method signature commas on new lines

                                      I am picking up some code where every method has been written with the method arguments listed like so:

                                      ```
                                      void Foo(Guid changesetId
                                      , int? foo
                                      , char bar
                                      )
                                      ```

                                      Note how each argument is prefixed with a comma on a seperate line.
                                      It would be great if there was a code style rule I could put in place to prevent this, so an argument on a new line cannot be prefixed with a comma.

                                      • When creating a C# project template, simplify updates by using an existing MyTemplate.vstemplate

                                        VS makes it very easy to create a template. However, the process of updating the template once it is created winds up being an ad-hoc exercise.

                                        When I choose File->Export Template..., VS should look in the folder of a project I use for a MyTemplate.vstemplate file, or the same file that gets placed in the template zip file itself. Then, when VS presents the wizard for creating the template, it should pre-populate all the fields from this file, allowing the user to change them at that time, and otherwise preserve this file as it exists.

                                        • support code coverge for .net core projects in visual studio 2017 ide and command line

                                          Support code coverage results for all .net core based projects within the IDE and dotnet test. This should also be easy to do within a VSTS Release definition without sacrificing a chicken and getting heavily into voodoo. Seriously, this is a no brainer..
