Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. In database Project Not able to resolve Circular References

In Database Project Not able to resolve circular reference. Still it is issue in VS. Also if we add more than 10 Project in a single database Solution then its goes as killing slow.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  2. add "Format Document" for t-sql code

Add "Format Document" for t-sql code similar to formatting C# code via Edit -> Advanced -> Format Document or Format Selection.

  3. Add SSRS SSIS Backward Compatiblity

I still have SSRS on SQL 2005 I can open these projects in VS2008, I dont want to find that if I open a project with such a dependancy it converts the project so it cannot be opened again in VS2008. This was fixed with C# projects why not BI projects. Just becase we upgrade to VS2012 it sould not mean we have to upgrade the rest of of our data centre.

  4. Add object name filtering to Schema Compare

When trying to compare specific objects in databases with large numbers of objects, it can be cumbersome to scroll through a large number of differences.

It would be great to be able to apply one or more object name filters to the results. It would also be nice if I could specify the filter ahead of time and only compare objects that meet the criteria.

  5. Improving Reports possibilities in SSRS

Allow developers to customize SSRS ReportParameter Area (Not only css but HTML5 and jquery) and controls more layout items by means of expressions (for example, is not possible to change chart size with an expression).
Finally I suggest to include basic new controls as button or some kind of event driven action when user interact with report (not only go to actions)

  6. Include SQL BI tools in the latest VS version

SQL Server 2012 has followed its predecessors as the BI Tools released again with the previous version of VS instead of the latest one.

Please, release the BI tools with the latest VS version and include it in SQL Server. Be the IDE really integrated again (or finally)!

Closing this item. SQL BI tools are shipping in the latest VS versions, incl. VS 2017. Some project types ship sooner than others (for example, AS and RS project types are already available as individual VSIX files for VS 2017), but as a whole the goal is to support the latest versions of VS as soon as possible.

  7. Object Explorer Details - View/Edit SQL Source

In Object Explorer Details, it would be nice to be able to quickly see the source (sp_helptext). It would also be nice to be able search in Object Explorer Details, instead of just browsing a folder. And if you really get crazy, it would be nice if you could edit the source just like VS2012's editor with intellisense.

  9. Create a WPF ReportViewer Control

Provide a WPF SSRS Report Viewer Control.

Not required but a great addition would be to have the option to display multiple reports with drag and drop and resize functionality effectively making it an end user dashboard designer, allow displaying excel sheets and powerpivots as well and it becomes a powerful tool.

  10. Allow suppression of a specific Warning on a specific object in a Database Project

I have a few stored procedures in my database project that reference local temporary tables created in another stored procedure. The procedures throw SQL71502 Warnings, that tell me the procedure has an unresolved reference to the temporary table. There is no way to resolve these Warnings within the Database Project, since there is no way for the Database Project to "see" the temporary table created in the other procedure. Therefore, the only choices I have are (1) keep the Warnings in the solution or (2) suppress all Warnings of type SQL71502 in the project. Neither approach is optimal. Keeping these…

I want to personally thank you for taking the time to share this suggestion. Since the suggestion you raised has not gathered many votes, the Visual Studio team is prioritizing other suggestions and closing it at this time.

If you would like us to reconsider this, please create a new suggestion. Again, thank you for sharing with us!

  12. remove modal dialogs

    Remove modal dialogs
Trying to develop reports using the report designer is bad enough due to the often poor rendering without the pain of having to drill up and down through dialogs each and every time you want to preview it

  13. Add an option to Automatically Update Stored Procedure Complex Types on Update Model from Database

In Visual Studio 2012 the Function Import/Complex Type of a Stored Procedure get created automatically when adding it to an Entity Model. This is a great feature over VS2010 where you had to after adding it to the Entity Model, go in and add the Function Import and create the complex type manually.

The request is that when updating the model, could the function imports/complex types be updated as well? In this cases this might not be desired so why not add a checkbox to the "Update Model from Database" form so either scenario could be addressed?

  14. Provide a keyboard shortcut or keyboard-accessible menu sequence for a new SQL query.

When editing a database within Visual Studio, such as when double-clicking a generated LocalDB database, it would be ideal to have a simple keyboard shortcut to facilitate opening a new SQL query window similar to SSMS's Ctrl-N "New Query" command. Even if it was a sequence such as Alt+Q (SQL menu), there is no shortcut key assigned to the "Transact-SQL Editor" submenu option.

  15. Color SQL Strings in C# and VB code with rules to make them easier to understand. Maybe have a shaded color to differentiate them.

I know it's better not to have SQL statements embedded in code, but there are times when it does need to be there. It would be great if the strings had some additional heuristics and intelligence to further colorize the different portions of the SQL statement similar to the way SSMS colors SQL queries.

I use the sync framework and the local database cache in my VS2010 projects, this has been removed in VS2012 and breaks my upgrade path. Please add support for this in VS2012.

The Schema Comparison utility. An great improvement would be to change the execution order of the "Write Updates" function. Now executing Stored Procedures and then User Defined Functions, since UDF is often used in SP's it would make greater sense executing the other way round. Keep up the good work.

Add 2012 Guidance for Walkthrough: Authoring a Custom Static Code Analysis Rule Assembly for SQL.

The guidance found here(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd172127.aspx) works fine for a 2010 Database project but no custom rules are loaded when we upgrade or start a new 2012 project.

  20. VSDBCMD support for SQL2012

The VSDBCMD tool is the most underrated and under-documented one available for database developers. I have a number of applications that are deployed with this tool, where VSDBCMD is bundled with my custom deployment utility. VSDBCMD is supported on XP through Windows 7, and supports SQL 2005 through SQL 2008 R2.

With the release of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), it seems that Microsoft is deprecating support for VSDBCMD.

I implore you to at the very least provide developers with an updated build of VSDBCMD so that it will support deployment to SQL2012 database servers. This will give developers enough…
