Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. add lambda/Linq Pane to Server Explorer for viewing query result and (T-SQL/LAMBDA/LINQ) equivalent

there is a big gap in SQL server syntax and .net querying language.
please provide facility in both visual studio and sql server management.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  2. Speed up SQL database tools in VIsual studio like Table designer

The SQL Server database related functionality is slow, like adding a new database (understandable to have some delay), configuring a dataset and designing table structure.

In fact in Visual Studio 11 Beta the table designer doesn't even work.
I get this loading screen (Picture 1) which eventually turns into this error message (Picture 2)

  3. Allow export to xlsx format in reportviewer

When exporting to excel format using local processing in reportviewer 2008 there is a limit of 256 columns and 65,536 rows. It be useful to have this limit increased to excel 2007 format specifications.

  5. Include Bootstrappers for SQL Server 2012 Express / LocalDB

VS 2010 was notoriously missing the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express bootstrapper. Hopefully all the latest install bootstrappers will be included.

  7. Show XSL Output when debugging XSLT from code

Currently there is no way to view the transformed output when debugging an XSLT file that was loaded via XslCompiledTransform. There is no "Show XSL Output" button as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms255828(v=vs.80).aspx. Adding this would greatly improve the XSLT debugging experience.

  8. Data Compare - update only changed columns in generated SQL

For the Data Compare feature in the database projects in Visual Studio, please allow an option for the generated UPDATE statements to include only the columns which actually have changes. E.g. if a table has 15 columns and only one column has changed, the update statement generated should only SET that one column, and not all 15.

  9. Ling As SQL

Make it possible to send Linq expression trees directly to storages optimizer and use investment put into it rather than encdecode SQL. With original Expression tree optimizer will have more information it needs rather than trying to understand generated SQL.

How about merging SQL Server Management Studio with Visual studio and The full capabilities of SSMS is available with Visual studio? Since most of the work is already done.. can we get to that level that we can totally get rid of SSMS and using VS intead ?

  12. enable developers to exclude Files from build/deployment within BIDS SSRS Projects

it would be helpful if one can decide to exclude reports other other kind of files within a BIDS SSRS project from deployment through Visual studio. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/36604214-765d-4ef3-ba8a-f878e8fd7859

  14. Handle import of Extended Properties on SQL objects In Visual Studio 2010 DB Projects

When creating a data dictionary we utilize the extended properties on objects and a third party tool to organize the extended properties for display. Currently when I import a script of extended properties into a database project using the "import script" action, the objects are placed in their own files using the name "MS_Description". This is a bit frustrating. I'm proposing that the extended properties are actually put into the objects that they are providing detail about. My work around right now (other than cutting/pasting in the target objects file) is to create a single file with all the extended…

When opening a database project the initial processing of the project is very slow, improvements were made from 2008 to 2010, but I think with the use of multicore machine it should be faster.

  17. Dataset Designer Automatic Layout

The Dataset Designer becomes a headache when you have dozens, if not more, tables. It is difficult to find the TableAdapter you are looking for unless you already know exactly where it is. Additionally, the Data Source Wizard likes to blow away your current layout and replace it with it's own. The designer needs a better way to organize the tableadapters. Something similar is available in MS ACCESS.

  18. Data Compare automation table list

It would be nice to save data comparisons (in a definition file, etc) or pass in which tables to compare via command line / command utility. When comparing data in larger databases (say, 500+ tables) and I want to compare only a subset of tables (say, 50-100) the interface requires manually selecting only the desired tables. It would be nice to automate this task.

  19. Add a database modeling tool similar to the ERWin or ERStudio products. Do not use the SSMS Diagram tool or Visio as an example.

Make sure the tool supports physical notations such as IDEF1X, IE, and DM. The tool needs to be as sophisticated as ERWin and ERStudio and not a non-standard tool such as SSMS Database Diagram tool or a generic drawing program such as Visio that is essentially useless for creating Enterprise ERDs.

  20. Database project should allow deployment of reference data tables

Some tables in our projects contain configuration or reference data.
There should be a way to maintain this data versioned as anything else.
Either having a source database for comparison and automatic generation of SQL to deploy to another database or keeping data in source files that would be deployed diferencially during database deployment would do.

This data is the hardest to maintain nowadays, no method (human-error-free) garanties that during a deployment reference data gets updated correctly
