Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Allow suppression of a specific Warning on a specific object in a Database Project

I have a few stored procedures in my database project that reference local temporary tables created in another stored procedure. The procedures throw SQL71502 Warnings, that tell me the procedure has an unresolved reference to the temporary table. There is no way to resolve these Warnings within the Database Project, since there is no way for the Database Project to "see" the temporary table created in the other procedure. Therefore, the only choices I have are (1) keep the Warnings in the solution or (2) suppress all Warnings of type SQL71502 in the project. Neither approach is optimal. Keeping these…

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  2. enable developers to exclude Files from build/deployment within BIDS SSRS Projects

it would be helpful if one can decide to exclude reports other other kind of files within a BIDS SSRS project from deployment through Visual studio. http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/36604214-765d-4ef3-ba8a-f878e8fd7859

  3. reintroduce the option IgnoreColumnOrder in Schema Compare

Please re-introduce the option to IgnoreColumnOrder when doing a Schema compare, as the task of copying large tables into temp tables and back again is tedious and takes a huge amount of time.

  5. Speed up SQL database tools in VIsual studio like Table designer

The SQL Server database related functionality is slow, like adding a new database (understandable to have some delay), configuring a dataset and designing table structure.

In fact in Visual Studio 11 Beta the table designer doesn't even work.
I get this loading screen (Picture 1) which eventually turns into this error message (Picture 2)

  6. Show XSL Output when debugging XSLT from code

Currently there is no way to view the transformed output when debugging an XSLT file that was loaded via XslCompiledTransform. There is no "Show XSL Output" button as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms255828(v=vs.80).aspx. Adding this would greatly improve the XSLT debugging experience.

  7. Automatic Stored Procedure Generation in SSDT

In some organizations production apps are only allowed to communicate with a database through stored procedures, including basic features like SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, AND DELETE. As a result, when creating a new table stored procedures must be created for each of those functions. While not difficult to do, it is incredibly tedious and time consuming when working with a lot of tables.

It would be nice if a SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) project had the option to automatically script stored procedures for a table or a view. SQL Server Management Studio has a somewhat similar feature with Script As,…

How about you get Data Compare working again for SQL 2012 databases. Can't believe you would forget one of the two core peices when updating SQL.

  11. Allow to generate deployment(comparison) script in non-SQLCMD mode

In VS-2012 SP1 when we generate deployment script , we need to turn on SQLCMD mode on SSMS before we can run the script.

Would like to have an option to generate the scripts in basic sql formate which can be run on SSMS directly.

  12. Sort and autoformat xml inside .edmx files before saving via EF Designer

Need the EF designer to generate nodes inside .edmx file in exactly the same order they are present in the database (currently a list of entity properties is saved in reverse order in mappings section, also when you update the model from the database schema the ordering is messed up). Also before saving .edmx file EF Designer should auto format the document. This would help significantly with branching, merging and resolving conflicts during merge operations of .edmx files.

Steps to reproduce: (1) Generate EF data model based on an existing database (2) Add a couple of new columns, indexes, foreign…

  13. LINQ2SQL classes generator should allow sync

Currently you can only regenerate atable from teh scratch, so if you add a column in DB, you either manually add it in DBML, or you wipe the table and dragdrop it again, but you loose all your specific settings done before. There should compare-view-choose-resync scenario for these cases !!

  14. Add 2012 Guidance for Walkthrough: Authoring a Custom Static Code Analysis Rule Assembly for SQL

Add 2012 Guidance for Walkthrough: Authoring a Custom Static Code Analysis Rule Assembly for SQL.

The guidance found here(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd172127.aspx) works fine for a 2010 Database project but no custom rules are loaded when we upgrade or start a new 2012 project.

  17. Update SQLserver 2012 Data Tool to be an extension

With VS2008 and SQLserver 2008 it was possible to install BIDS as a component of the full VS2008 installation. When VS2010 came along, you had to run VS2010 for most development, but needed a VS2008 shell for BIDS. Now VS2012 is current, SQLserver 2012 uses a VS2010 shell. Since Visial Studio allows extensions, why isn't the BIDS/SSDT compnent developed as an extension - albeit a complex one?

  18. Add comments to SSIS packages in BIDS

I'd love to be abe to attach a comment bubble to a Control Flow or Data Flow step to explain to the next developer what the **** I'm doing. :-) I know that there are already Annotations on the design surface... what I want is either: 1) to be able to draw a line between an annotation and a Control Flow/Data Flow step; or 2) to be able to right-click a step and click on "Add Comment" something like Office has, and then be able to show/hide comments on the design surface. Thanks!

  20. Add the ability to have a REPORT Footer

Seriously. There is currently no way to create a report footer element that shows only on the last page of the report at the bottom. How is this possible? Trying to create an Invoice report in SSRS is infuriating, so much so that we have completely moved to another product.

Yes. I know that you can do whacky work arounds by dynamically resizing tablix controls to put content to the bottom of a page by calculating the page size, margins, offsets and all that jazz but why is this even necessary?

Even the functionality of using a PAGE Footer and…
