Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Add a database modeling tool similar to the ERWin or ERStudio products. Do not use the SSMS Diagram tool or Visio as an example.

Make sure the tool supports physical notations such as IDEF1X, IE, and DM. The tool needs to be as sophisticated as ERWin and ERStudio and not a non-standard tool such as SSMS Database Diagram tool or a generic drawing program such as Visio that is essentially useless for creating Enterprise ERDs.

  2. LinqToRDF

Semantic applications using "big data" are undoubtedly the next frontier in application development. Web standards like RDF/OWL/SPARQL are here to stay and are mature enough to start developing intelligent tooling support if MS is to stay relevant in what is known at "Web 3.0" or the "Semantic Web".

IMO, the single most important aspect of this is picking up where the LinqToRDF project left off and enabling LINQ querying on a SPARQL compatible endpoints.

LinqToRDF also provided a VS designer experience but unfortunately is highly outdated with support for only Visual Studio 2008.

Please start building tooling/frameworks to make development…

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  3. Data Compare - update only changed columns in generated SQL

For the Data Compare feature in the database projects in Visual Studio, please allow an option for the generated UPDATE statements to include only the columns which actually have changes. E.g. if a table has 15 columns and only one column has changed, the update statement generated should only SET that one column, and not all 15.

  4. Provide capability to update a Domain Service

When using an entity data model generated from a database, it is easy to update the data model (right click and select update from database); however, updating an associated domain service is not so easy.
    - There is currently no update capability
    - To accommodate requires deleting and re-creating the domain service, this is combersome when you have added custom methods

    Suggestion:
    - During the DomainService.cs code generation process make the new domain service reside within a partial
class, this will help better accommodate custom code.
    - Do the same as above with the metadata class if it is created. …

  5. Extend the SqlBulkCopy exception message

Display the column name in the exception message when the WriteToServer() function throws the "The given ColumnMapping does not match up with any column in the source or destination." exception. So it is easier to find out what causes the exception.

  7. Add an option to use pre/post deployment scripts in SQL Server Data Tools' Schema Compare Generate Scripts function.

After a schema compare is performed, I would like to be able to click the generate script button and have the script to include the pre and post deploy scripts included in the output. (Much like how a full publish works.)

  8. Entity Framework eSQL hierarchical query

It would be very beneficial to users that must work with massive amounts of hierarchal data to be able to perform hierarchical queries against our data using Entity SQL (eSQL), something like functionality provided by SQL CTE queries or Oracle's hierarchical queries.

Please provide some kind of similar recursive/hierarchical functionality without requiring direct access to the database server's native query language; it negates the purpose of using an abstraction layer to begin with.

  9. Matrix control support pagination method for columns/rows.

eg. every 4 columns * 5 rows per page. At the same time allow adding multiple title/header rows for the matrix. They are more usefull when there are more then 2 dimensions in the matrix. we can promote one of the row filed dimension info to the title/header level to explain some common information for the column fields and repeat the header dimension info on each paginated page.

  10. Add a way to view the SQL generated in SSRS without having to go through the SQL Server Profiler

At the moment it is an absolute pain to see how SSRS is generating SQL without going through SQL Server Profiler.

This is particularly the case when you have a predicate such as '[ColumnName] in (@InParameter)' and the @InParameter is a multi-select list.

The Dataset Designers are a great help but do not help when trying to debug Reports at runtime.

What I propose is to include a Tab next to Design and Preview tabs that shows the TSQL that is generated as a result of the parameter selections.

Or as an alternative allow the TSQL to be sent to…

  11. add lambda/Linq Pane to Server Explorer for viewing query result and (T-SQL/LAMBDA/LINQ) equivalent

there is a big gap in SQL server syntax and .net querying language.
please provide facility in both visual studio and sql server management.

  13. Improving Reports possibilities in SSRS

Allow developers to customize SSRS ReportParameter Area (Not only css but HTML5 and jquery) and controls more layout items by means of expressions (for example, is not possible to change chart size with an expression).
Finally I suggest to include basic new controls as button or some kind of event driven action when user interact with report (not only go to actions)

  14. Allow three part naming for referring a DB object in same database project

Many developers have a preference to consistently use database qualified object naming. Currently using three part naming [databasename].[schemaname].[objectname] for referring an object in same DB project results in a error/warning in Visual Studio. This is is allowed in SQL server, so it makes sense for add functionality in Visual Studio to have an implicit reference to the same database project and not generate any errors/warning in such situations.

  15. Database project should allow deployment of reference data tables

Some tables in our projects contain configuration or reference data.
There should be a way to maintain this data versioned as anything else.
Either having a source database for comparison and automatic generation of SQL to deploy to another database or keeping data in source files that would be deployed diferencially during database deployment would do.

This data is the hardest to maintain nowadays, no method (human-error-free) garanties that during a deployment reference data gets updated correctly

  16. SSRS Reports for MVC View

Isn't a Report a type of view? My idea would be to have a version of SSRS report designer specific for ASP.Net MVC. In your MVC project, you right click the view folder and select Add Report, and report designer would appear. The Report would simply be an MVC view. And the designer would map report fields to models.

  18. Add BIDS to Visual Studio 2012

It is annoying switching back and forth from Report Builder to visual Studio, plus Report Builder is not as complete as Reporting services in VS 2008 was, and too much trouble to make reports work in a VB application.

  20. Optimize SSDT Composite Projects (Performance & Schema Compare)

When using Composite Database Projects (2 Projects / Reference as "Same Database") you will find one *.dbmdl Files in each Project folder and it seems that the referencing Project contains all Objects from the referenced Project, too (on the disk an in-memory as well).

If you use "Schema Compare" between the referencing Project and your Database, all non-changed Objects will be shown (not able to filter them out) and changed Objects could not be disabled.
