Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide our customers one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Please make ISO files for Visual Studio 2017

Creating our own offline layout installer by downloading multiple files instead of a single ISO is messy, and is a step backwards from Visual Studio 2015. The installer too, is really slow. Please provide ISO files for VS 2017 for convenient installation on multiple computers that have slow or no internet connection. Thank you.

Thanks for the many comments on this topic. We are listening…

On behalf of the Visual Studio team, I wanted to share a few responses to some of the questions and concerns raised, in the spirit of sharing with transparency the reasons that led us to the current installer options.

Visual Studio 2017 is a huge product, because we support so many types of development: from Android to UWP to C++ to Unity to Linux. If we were to still offer a ‘full’ install, it would come in at over 50GB. That’s one huge ISO image!

We surveyed hundreds of people during the previews and RCs, and people told us that they had historically used an ISO for two reasons: (i) because they wanted to download once and create a network install for enterprise deployment; (ii) because they had a shaky internet connection and wanted to be sure they’d downloaded…

  2. Allow changing the nickname of the installation

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351566/allow-changing-the-nickname-of-the-installation.html
You can set nicknames of installs in VS2017 but you cannot change those nicknames when modifying the installation features. This should be allowed.

  3. Deliver Visual Studio updates via WSUS

Instead of spending time and effort on improving the Visual Studio update process, why not focus on integrating these updates into Microsoft's existing, working update mechanism, aka Windows Update/WSUS?

The Office family of products already do this if the "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" setting is enabled in the Windows Update options, so I honestly don't see why it cannot be done for VS updates - especially since the VS update process requires no user interaction.

  5. Cleanup VS2017 installation files

After installing VS2017 I have over 6GB of packages in the following location:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\VisualStudio\Packages

Can I safely remove this files? Shouldn't the installer remove them for me? Could there be an option on the installer to do so?

  6. Add a search box to Visual Studio Installer

I often have to hunt down a component I'm missing in the Individual Components list in Visual Studio Installer. Having a searchable list would aid in that search immensely.

  7. Add option to "Update VS and rebuild opened solution"

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351764/add-option-to-update-vs-and-rebuild-opened-solutio.html
After the update, solution needs to be rebuilt.
It would be cool if 'update & rebuild' could be batched.

  8. Ensure Backwards Library Compatibility Within Major VS Versions

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351731/ensure-backwards-library-compatibility-within-majo.html
Not cool that Visual Studio can't support older libraries built on the same major version...
    Updated from VS17 v15.6.x to 15.8.3.

  9. Installer: Add a button to abort while downloading packages

When the installer only downloads packages and has changed nothing. An abort button should be enabled so that this download can be aborted.

  11. Do not change the IIS hosting certificates when upgrading visual studio.

Do not change the IIS hosting certificates when upgrading visual studio. Every time visual studio is upgraded, the iis ssl certificates for sites pointed to visual studio solutions revert back to the IIS Express Development Certificate. If a local site is configured to use a different certificate for hosting, it should not be changed.

  12. Roll Back Visual Studio Version

I would like the ability to roll-back or switch between different versions of Visual Studio from the VS Installer. Eg anywhere between VS 2017 v15.3, 15.4, 15.6, 15.7.

I'm a little apprehensive every time I do a major Visual Studio update. I have to do a full-metal backup on my DEV machine before I do any VS updates. I've been stung badly in the past when some VS update breaks something.

It would make things a lot easier if we could roll between versions in case an update just doesn't work for some reason and we'd like to rollback.

  13. Please don't develop anything new

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351794/please-dont-develop-anything-new.html
Please don't develop anything new, just keep working on the errors that so many users already frustrated of, it's been 2days, I'm still unable to find a solution to my problem, I'm still not able to install Visual studio even though I already spend about 50GB trying to download all plugins, iso files. Even iso file which needs to acts as an offline installer asks for files from online, what a savage :(, either you stop building new things, or provide a solution…

  16. Visual Studio Installer should not open as a modal dialog OR Visual Studio should close.

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351724/visual-studio-installer-should-not-open-as-a-modal.html
When running Visual Studio Installer from the notifications-panel, it will open as a modal dialog. I am unable to close the VS-instance that started the installer the normal way. The installer will force VS to close during setup.
In the current situation, I always get the "Microsoft Visual Studio Recovered Files" -dialog at the first startup after an update, to indicate that VS was closed and the solution-file can be recovered.

  18. When Visual Studio installer pauses at a dialog box, change the taskbar to yellow

I was working on some Office documents while installing an update for Visual Studio.

The installer taskbar button continued to pulse green (i.e. ongoing progress) for a long time, but when I checked back in, it was prompting me to close Office documents and retry.

If the taskbar button "progress" had turned conventionally yellow and stopped pulsing, I would have been able to recognize this and action it minutes in advance of the actual discovery.

  19. Provide a powershell version of vcvars

Using visual-studio from the command line, if your command line is powershell, is not currently well represented. There are no obvious cmdlets or powershell scripts that allow you to invoke the equivalent of a vsdevcmd powershell prompt.

So far the work-arounds I've seen tend to involve guessing what the 'vcvars.bat' is called, invoking that, calling 'set' and scraping the values. Problem is, you basically have to know where visual studio is before you begin.
