Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  2. Workflow Metaprogramming Language

I'd like to introduce my workflow metaprogramming language, it's just a prototype.

Metah.W(MW) is a C#-derived metaprogramming language for Windows Workflow Foundation 4.5. It provides an alternative way of composing activities to the WF designer. Its website is https://github.com/knat/Metah .
I'd love to hear your comments.

  3. Provide a framework for long running human workflows

It is really a common requirement, in my experience, for LOB systems to provide support for human workflows (tasklists & queues).

Currently, to achieve this with WF, requires a lot of up-front custom code to be developed. It would be especially helpful if this could be released with out-of-the-box ASP.Net MVC integration.

Thank you for taking the time to make this suggestion. The suggestion was made two years ago and has a low number of votes. In an effort to determine what scenarios customers still find relevant, we are closing old suggestions. Please create a new one if you feel this scenario is important.

  4. Enable customization for FlowNode-like activities

There is NO way to create a custom activity similar to those in a flowchart - with multiple exit paths and custom design. A try-catch activity in a flowchart fashion would be nice, but there is no way to even create one from scratch.

Why there is no love for Flowcharts anymore?

  5. Add useful properties to WorkflowInstanceRecord

I would like the WorkflowInstanceRecord to contain a subset of the fields that are stored in the InstanceStore InstancesTable. Useful fields would include: IsInitialized, IsSuspended, SuspensionReason, and (especially) BlockingBookmarks.

This would be very useful for building applications that present different options to the application user based on the 'state' of the workflow.

  6. Allow "commenting out" activities

The base Activity class should have an IsEnabled property. If true at design time, the WF designer should "gray out" the Activity. If true at runtime, this should cause the activity to bypass execution.

This would be very useful for debugging - the WF equivalent of commenting out code.

  8. Service Bus activities

I'd like the possibility to have workflow services interact with ServiceBus (on Azure or on-premise).
I'd like to be able to manage queues and topics, to add subscriptions and rules but, most important, to be able to send and receive messages.
Send and receive activities should induce the workflow idle, so that workflows are off the memory while waiting for messages.

  9. Generate dynamic upgrade maps for persisted workflow instances via the designer

Currently, we can only dynamically upgrade persisted workflow via code. This is because in WF 4.5 there is no designer support for the workflow definition update phase (designated as phase number 2 on this page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh314052.aspx). Considering one of the key selling points of the framework is the workflow designer, it is surprising that no support exists for dynamic updates.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  10. Support resizing WF designer components

Static designer item (node?) size has been an inconvenience for our real-world use cases. In our pilot project using WF4, Windows Workflow has demonstrated itself as useful for our enterprise -- developers understand the code behind the activities, while Business Analysts understand the overall flowcharts. But the small node size sometimes gets in the way, for both audiences.

For example -- and this is somewhat contrived, to obscure our business logic, but it's a frequently occurring problem -- an Assignment node with:

    "BlueFoobarWidget.Status = TheWidgetObject.Status"

Is partially hidden by the small node size, so it actually appears to read 'BlueFoobarWidget…

  11. WorfklowApplication should support Durable Delays

I would like to self host a workflow application by a Windows Service application. This application schedules a set of emails to be sent at set times. I implemented this as a hosted Workflow Service using delays and persistence. Because Worfkflow Service supports durable delays if for any reason my windows service restarts, all the scheduled tasks will resume as scheduled and this is automatic.

Because my service is self contained, it doesn't need to receive requests from external AppDomains - it is an addon to a legacy system and the trigger for the initial task scheduling is a database…

  12. Support nested types in Windows Workflow XAML

The current Windows Workflow design surface does not support nested types, but these are perfectly valid as an InArgument or OutArgument in a CodeActivity.

    The two issues are:

    1. Arguments or Variables in a XAML workflow cannot be of type SomeType.SomeOtherType and this happens often when we use 3rd party libraries or COM-callable wrappers
    2. Trying to write any expression that involves a nested type which is serialized to XAML(and generates a <file>.g.cs) throws a designer error, even though this is perfectly valid code.

This is terribly inconsistent and sometimes makes me reconsider choosing WF when with this feature it…

  15. Make the WF Expression Editor remember size and position

Make the Expression Editor remember size and position so I don't have to resize the window every time again when I enter a large expression. Or make at least default size bigger.

  19. Display a workflow as pseudocode instead of the visual designer.

Add the ability to work with a workflow as code in the VS IDE...

Or - have the ability to write code in C# / VB and have it compile into a workflow which can be run in workflow foundation.

Many people write programs in c# and VB, doesn't it make sense that an entire workflow should be able to be written in one of those languages? XAML is a hard language to write a workflow in as it is very verbose when coding, and the visual designer can be much more difficult to work with than a textual language.

  20. Create an Attribute for Toolbox Custom Activity Icons

It would be great if adding an embeddeed Icon in a Custom Activity were as simple as

    1. Including the Icon in the Custom Activity Assembly
    2. At the top of the inherited CodeActivity add something like

    [ToolboxIcon("MyEmbeddedFile.ico")]
public sealed class MyCustomActivity : CodeActivity
    {
    ...
    }
