Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Opensource the backend behind "Send a Smile/Send a frown"

In few videos and blog posts, you've shared the stack you have behind the "Send a smile/send a frown" feature in Visual Studio.
This system can be a great tool for developers out there, to use in their own apps.

Can you opensource the backend for this feature, and maybe a little frontend for WPF/UWP ?

  2. Why is there a feedback button?

Why is there a feedback button? It's distracting and I'm tired of everything in Win10 asking me questions. Even my login screen wallpaper asks for feedback. I'm constantly being distracted by the bombardment of feedback requests!

  4. Add Persian language to MSDN documentation

I am Irainian Microsoft fan , and C# developer.
I was wondering when the MSDN supports 66 languages ,
WHY it doesn't support Persian language with thousands of Persian developers ???
I hope someday the .Net Team valorize it's persian developers.
    Thanks in advance.

  5. provide complete offline help option

The offline help in VS 2015 has not been updated in ages, and is not synchronized with the online help. Online help has poor usability and sometimes there isn't wifi around. I see in VS 2017 offline help is not even an option!

  7. Open-source RDCMan

I'd love for Microsoft to open-source their Remote Desktop Connection Manager application. We use it extensively at our workplace and it would be great to work with the dev community to help further improve it

  8. Reduce the number of updates, weekly updates are far too often

Weekly or near weekly updates that require restarting every instance of visual studio is very disruptive to those of us that keep multiple solutions open. Minor updates aren't so bad, especially those that don't require restart but we've seen at least 3 or 4 updates that require closing all instances and keeping them closed for 10+ minutes while the installer applies an update - that's far too excessive

  9. Stop closing suggestions prematurely in uservoice

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351712/stop-closing-suggestions-prematurely-in-uservoice.html
While trying to find an existing suggestion for a suggestion I had in mind, I found at least 3 different instances of it, each with ~10 votes. Each one is closed with the following note from the VS PM: "I want to personally thank you for taking the time to share this suggestion. Since the suggestion you raised has not gathered many votes, the Visual Studio IDE team is prioritizing other suggestions and closing it at this time."

    I highly recommend not doing…

  10. Report a Problem should report upload progress

When recording a complex problem with the report a problem tool, ETL traces can get up to gigabyte size which will be silently uploaded without progress notification so its hard to tell when you can turn off your PC or restart. Having a simple "12MB of 1GB uploaded" status would be sufficient.

  12. Restrict editing of past sprints work items or outdated work items in TFS

I need an option like restrict edit of work items in past sprints in TFS(on-prem). Once the sprint period over, it cannot be editable for particular user group. I've found an option in Iteration Security settings to restrict edit. But, it is not working. Please provide one solution for this issue.

  13. report problem website should use markdown

When typing the answer to https://community.visualstudio.com/problems/230/c-intellisense-causes-crash-when-typing-opening-pa.html I felt like I was in a StackOverflow clone so I tried writing a link using markdown, only to find that there was no Preview option and that the Link button in the editor inserts links WYSIWIG style. Instead the Report a Problem site should use markdown since it’s faster to type that than to deal with the WYSIWIG editor and it’s the standard these days.

I couldn’t find the right category to report this under…

  15. more fixes per update

    Release Date: May 12, 2017 - Visual Studio 2017 version 15.2 (26430.06)

ONE fix for this update? why not wait a bit and release multiple fixes? updating my installation of VS for this one update seems like a...waste?

  16. Uservoice should not restrict number of votes.

Limit number of votes is a bad idea. Instead of express the opinion , is the idea sounds good for me, I have to think, how many votes I have left, should I remove my previous vote, is one suggestion more important than other, should I give more votes for my own idea or support other's idea, or should I create other fake account to have more votes. It forces users to compare apple with oranges. A person who concern about one thing, will put more votes in his idea, but people who over time are interesting in multiple issues,…

  17. Create an @Backlog item similar to @CurrentIteration than I can use to create queries for use by mutliple teams.

I have four teams, all working on the same project in different product areas. The work is sliced up using iterations, so each team has its own backlog iteration with sub-ordinate sprints. We have a specific sprint named 'Backlog' to improve filtering under each.
@CurrentIteration is great for some things, but I want to create queries based on a teams backlog (such as all user stories not under the backlog iteration with a link to a risk item).

If I had an @Backlog term, I could create a query that would work for all teams, rather than having to create…

  18. Visual Studio 2017 Professional Non-MSDN Upgrade Path (for VS 2019)

Just read the blog post about 2019: It would be great if there will be an upgrade option (reduced price) for non-MSDN customers coming from Visual Studio 2017 Professional.

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.

When click "Report a Problem" in browser, you should indicator user there is also a "Report a Problem" button in the installer. Because someone has a installation problem, hasn't installed visual studio yet.
