  1. Make the installation of Visual Studio light-weight and fast

    What?
Installing Visual Studio takes too long

    Why?
There's a lot of stuff that the VS installer installs that I probably never is going to use.

    Proposal:
Make modules and packages install when needed. The Office-install has had this option for ages, where you can deceide whether you want to install a feature a) now, b) when needed, or c) never. That way the basic install will probably be a lot faster and it will take up less space on our drives (how many terabytes of never-used-features do you think VS is accumulating worldwide?).

I belive you already have the…

We’re delighted to say that Visual Studio 2017 is now released, including a completely revamped installer in response to this and other feedback. The smallest installation of Visual Studio is one-tenth the size of previous versions and takes on average just three minutes to install. Build-to-build upgrades take just a minute or two. You can select a workload of your choice – we won’t install things that you’re not going to use.

To the proposal, we support in-product acquisition of components on demand. You can just hit Ctrl+Q (quick launch), type the feature you want, and we’ll take you straight into an installation experience for that feature.

Thanks for the great feature request – we hope you like Visual Studio 2017! Download it from http://visualstudio.com.

    • Visual Studio Task Manager

One of the best things about Visual Studio is it's extensibility. The problem is, the more extensions I install, the less stable my Visual Studio gets, the more memory it takes, and sometimes it even takes constant CPU even when minimized. It would be great to have a task manager feature which allowed you to identify the misbehaving extension much easier.

        This was a great suggestion.

As per the updates below, we’re delighted to report that Visual Studio 2017 now includes support for detecting and managing poorly-performing extensions. From the Help menu you can choose “Manage Visual Studio Performance” to see extensions that load slowly or impact typing responsiveness. We also proactively detect extensions that are particularly poorly-performing, and prompt Visual Studio users to disable them.

We covet further proposals around improving the performance or reliability of Visual Studio extensions for consideration in future updates – please create new suggestion entries for them so the community can discuss and vote on them individually even now this suggestion is closed.

        Thanks for your support,

Tim Sneath | Visual Studio Team

      • Enable filtering out warnings without a Code in the error list, ex. "Referenced component could not be found".

When working with a large solution it is not uncommon to have many projects unloaded to decrease build times during development. However, this leads to many warnings displayed in the Error List saying "The referenced component 'XXXX' could not be found", which makes it difficult to find the warnings and CA-warnings that we are actually of interest to me.

There seems to be no way to filter out these warnings today, so I suggest you implement that.

          Hi supporters of this item

As was pointed out by a follower of this item, Visual Studio 2015 added column-wise flexible “Excel Style” filtering on many of its columns including the error code.

Simply hover over the column header of the Error Code column in the error list, and you’ll see a filter icon appear. Clicking it produces a list of the kinds of item in that column, and you can easily select only those codes you wish to act on. In the case of items without an error code, you should be able to eliminate them just by deselecting blank from the list.

I’m marking this item as “completed” on this basis.

          Hope this helps,

Thank you for your feedback! As we move our documentation from MSDN to docs.microsoft.com, we started rolling out the ability to download entire documentation sets in the form of PDF files. In addition, we have also revamped our offline help generation service, that will provide more content available through Help Viewer, bundled with Visual Studio.

          • Add support for Git over ssh in Team Explorer

Add support for ssh transport when syncing with Git repositories. libgit2 has ssh support now, so this should be fairly straightforward.

            • Provide integrated JavaScript debugging in Firefox and Google Chrome browsers

Currently, integrated JavaScript debugging with Visual Studio is only possible with Internet Explorer. Even though you can do a bit of JavaScript debugging with external tools in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, the experience for debugging is not nearly as good as the integrated JavaScript debugging experience available with Internet Explorer. However, JavaScript errors often cause the IE browser to crash, thus making it very difficult to provide a great JavaScript debugging experience with Visual Studio. Therefore, Microsoft should provide integrated Visual Studio debugging experiences with Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome as they are the most popular alternative browsers in…

              • Create Windows Installer Setup Project for Visual Studio 2015 Community version

                Hi,

Can you create a Windows Installer Setup Project extension for Visual Studio 2015 Community version?

It looks like the version of the installer for Visual Studio 2015 you posted only support Visual Studio 2015 Professional.

                • Automatically fix fixable errors

Some errors in the error list could be automatically fixed. For instance, you build your code and the error "The type 'bla' is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Data.Entity'" appears in the error pane. This error is easily fixed by adding the correct reference to the project, but since Studio already knows what it's looking for, it knows where it's located (GAC), why isn't there an option to fix it?

It would be nice if the error pane would have a column "Autoresolve" with for each error which migh be fixable a link "Try resolving". Studio…

                    Hi supporters of this issue

As has been noted by some commenters to this issue, we introduced the Light Bulb capability in Visual Studio:

                    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn872466.aspx

This addresses some of the feedback on this thread, and new lightbulb “fixers” are appearing with every release. The lightbulb allows you to apply the same fix to other issues of the same type in the document, project or solution too, so bulk fixing is easy.

We don’t currently expose this feature directly in the error list, but you can always use F8/Shift-F8 to move between errors in the list and Ctrl+. to invoke the light bulb.

I’m resolving this item as completed since the main thrust of the request has been met, so you can all have your votes back for other items. If you have other feedback, e.g. about fixers you’d like to see implemented or having the ability to fix items directly…

In the year 2011, maybe it's finally time to handle WM_MOUSEWHEEL by the window under the cursor, rather than using the backward way of handling them in the window with focus?

                      • One installer, and ease switch between community, professional and entreprise editions

A similar idea was already published for community to pro:
                        https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio-2015/suggestions/13116933-allow-switching-editions-up-or-down-without-rein

More generally, apply that for all editions: community, professional, and entreprise.
First, instead of multiple installer for each edition, Visual Studio should offer only one installer and the same installation base.
Only the licence key/account would define which edition is used.

Second, it would add a lot of flexibility for the users to be able to edit/change the editions as much as they want, i.e. be able to swtich from entreprise to professional or the other way around many times.

Take the following scenario: I have installed the tryout…

                        • Add /locale option to the [Installer].exe /Layout command line

I\m trying currently to download the Visual Studio 2013 for Web with Update 3 using the /Layout option to keep the installation files for future needs, but it seems that the installer is acquiring setup files for all the locales which seems a bit weird since I downloaded the en-us installer and that's making the download time and cost bigger.

The ISO file has also a huge download size (4.4GB) which also seems weird since this is a subset edition of the full Visual Studio product.

Please add the locale switch to the Layout option for the installer, or otherwise,…

                            • Visual Studio 2012 Dark Theme should have darker backgrounds

The dark theme in VS2012 is a welcomed feature in Visual Studio, but the backgrounds are way to bright. Being gray not dark. This means the contrast is poor to the foreground color (or lack thereof).

There are basically two dark background colors. One for the main window and one for sub windows (such as SOLUTION EXPLORER or similar). The sub windows get a brighter background. These especially incl the text editor should have darker backgrounds instead.

Hopefully, if these colors will not be changed, at least VS2012 should have a theme editor to fix this design mistake.

As of Nov 2014, you can now use VS Community 2013 for this: https://www.visualstudio.com/en-us/products/visual-studio-community-vs. VS Community is a free, extensible edition of Visual Studio which you can use to develop for multiple platforms. It works with any of the available extensions in the VS Gallery: https://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/. We’ve seen quite a few users choosing to do their Python development by installing PTVS with this tool.

                                  • Add better support for cross-platform third-party build systems

Add better built-in support for cross-platform third-party build systems such as QMake or CMake so that it's easier to build within the IDE using such build systems.

Even the simple ability to override the entire Visual Studio build system with a simple command-line command would satisfy my use-case, as all I really need is to be able to specify the command's execution directory (in this case, the build directory) and the command itself (qmake ../source && nmake).

                                    Pretty simple.

                                    • Please make it easy to installing 3rd party libaries globaly

Currently installing a 3rd party libary globally is a problem. This means if I need a libary for many projects, I do not need to add them each time. Also make it possible to third party tools such cmake to detect these libaries. I am thinking to have folders similar to linuix's /usr/lib and usr/include folder structure. This means if needed. I can copy the *.h or lib file and it gets linked

                                      • Separate the XAML and Design on windows phone app

When you have a big screen or extended monitor to use VS 2011 on windows phone app, I would like to suggest you that allow separate the design screen and XAML in a different screens outside VS. For example, I want keep in VS windows only XAML and C# code. In this case, I want open the design screen outside VS.NET IDE.
I believe that this is important to developer and designer to see how the design is.

                                        • Please support the long path feature that was released with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update enabled long paths to overcome the 260 character path limit for manifested applications. Please enable this support in Visual Studio!
