Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide our customers one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  2. Allow multiple languages (C#,VB,F#) in the same project

Now with Roslyn this could be possible.

It's very annoying that you have to convert C# to VB just to include a class/function/snippet in your VB project, and viceversa.
If all code compiles to MSIL, then why we cannot use different NET languages in the same project.

Another example is a function in F#, you may want to use some functions that will simplify/improve your project (C#/VB) and it's better to do it in a functional language, but you don't want to code all your project in F#, nor want to create a separate project in F# with its DLL…

  4. VB.Net Support for Android/Apple/Raspberry Pi

Could you please add support for the following Android/Apple & Raspberry pi please? as well as more examples in Vb.NET?

Some of us don't really want to have to stop using such a great language.

    Thank you.

  5. Lowercase keywords

Please provide a full option to use lowercase keywords in VB, instead of using a hack with a custom font.

  6. VB Samples - UWP

Almost no VB samples are available for UWP. You find a topic you're interested in at GitHub Windows-universal-samples - and darn - C# only.

It makes learning about UWP needlessly complicated and error prone.

PLEASE - make the time to create VB samples.

  10. The only place where Basic figures in top 10 languages is in Memes

Ruby, Python would not have been born if Basic was not killed. What a pity no one had the vision or competence to make the VB compiler evolve with the changing times

  11. Provide code in vb and c#

Microsoft keeps saying they will continue to support Visual Basic, yet everywhere I look I see code examples and sample programs only provided in C#.

The Microsoft Developer Network provides the option to view different languages, so there must be people at Microsoft who can translate the code.

Whilst I don't expect every Microsoft blogger to provide samples in multiple languages, sites like www.asp.net with it's learn section should provide at least VB and C#.

  13. Do Not Collapse Comments

It would be nice if the comments simply did not collapse with CTRL+M+O. That or if there is a blank space between two blocks of comments. Do not treat them as 1. But instead it will collapse the entire section even though comments may not be a part of the one above it (obv limitation of VB because they do not have multi-line comments). I'm sure if we could just have a more robust commenting system. Things would have been peachy and I may not have switched to C#.
This should be simple, and to me already done as the…

  14. Bring back a standalone simple visual basic like you once had....PLEASE PLEASE

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351692/bring-back-a-standalone-simple-visual-basic-like-y.html
It was so simple and it worked. Why did you destroy it?
Please just make it a stand alone separate from Visual studio. Make it for the simpletons like me so I can knock up a program in a day using windows forms. No project this or that just click on a desktop icon and straight into VB and just name project and away we go. like we once did.

Remember how Microsoft started it was the little guys in a shed on…

  15. Change the name Visual Basic or VB to B#

Everybody thinks and its really common perception that C# is much more powerful than VB. Which is totally false. Under.net framework, there is no difference. I have used both VB and C# IDE. But honestly. VB IDE is a lot more better than C# IDE.

We need to re-brand Visual Basic before everybody starts hating it. Change the name of product from VB to B#

  17. Set Option Strict On by Default instead of Off

Currently when you install Visual Studio, Option Strict if set to be Off by default for new projects. This causes people a lot of issues. Numerous forum posts are due to the fact that people have made a typo or type conversion error due to this setting being off. By setting it On by default, new users would get used to the setting immediately. Users opening old projects where this setting is off would not have any changes to make, so there is really no reason not to do this.

  18. C# and VB wrong Perception

I have writing code in Visual Basic since 2005. I see most of the people just talk about C#. Everyone think VB is just very tiny language and cannot do what C# can do. Which I believe is FALSE after the .NET framework.

Can you re-brand Visual Basic as B# and help this language to get same status and respect as C#.

VB is really powerful language, but the perception that is built is totally disgusting. Even in universities, No one agrees to let you develop project in VB. This situation is really disappointing and damaging the image of this…

  19. Copy paste of type name from a variable tool tip

When hovering above a variable the editor displays a tooltip with the type information.

It would be useful to enable a right click menu that would place the info in the clipboard for future use, this is especially true for long namespaces.
