I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Add UTF8 support to Win32 APIs AND Visual Studio

For a long time Windows has supported A and W functions for ANSI and Wide character Unicode. Such as CreateFileA and CreateFileW. I'm requesting for Windows to support having an 8 suffix on all APIs that require a string parameter. Such as CreateFile8. Also, in Visual Studio, a 3rd option can be added in "Character Type". "Use UTF-8 Character Set" in addition to the already existing "Use Unicode Character Set" and "Use Multi-Byte Character Set". When that character set is selected, then all of the new Windows UTF-8 win32 APIS are used. Multi-byte and wide character Unicode are pretty old…

  2. Add support for Gradle-based solutions

Sometimes using MSBuild Projects is very painful (especially with cross-platform projects). That's why my idea is to support Gradle projects natively by Visual Studio. Despite Gradle having tasks to generate MSBuild projects, loading them is very, very painful.

At this moment, I think that all of you will agree, Visual Studio is THE BEST IDE available. That's why I don't want to abandon it. Gradle support could help with that.

I want to personally thank you for taking the time to share this suggestion. Since the suggestion you raised has not gathered many votes, the Visual Studio IDE team is prioritizing other suggestions and closing it at this time.

If you would like us to reconsider this, please create a new suggestion. Again, thank you for sharing with us!

  3. Allow shared project in the same directory as the C# projects that use it

If you have a C# project that references a shared project in the same directory, Visual Studio gives a warning: "The file '...' could not be added to the project. Cannot add a link to the file ... This file is within the project directory tree."

This is a very natural way to use shared projects; it would be great if this were a supported scenario.

  4. Add an "open folder" option

Add the ability to open a folder, as you can in Visual Studio Code. This will make it easier to work with NodeJS and other JS projects.

  5. Make the Solution Configurations Dropdown larger

    I have created 3 Configurations:
    "DESENVOLVIMENTO-A"
    "DESENVOLVIMENTO-B"
    "DESENVOLVIMENTO-C"
and the DropDown size only show "DESENV" wich is a problem since i never get sure what is the one choosed.

  6. Make new project format and tooling available for ALL projects

I was extremely disappointed to find VS 2017 did not support the new project format for anything besides .NET Core. This is unacceptable. We need it to be supported for ALL project types (WinForms, WPF, CommandLine, etc).

We also want the GUI that shows a combined references/NuGet package list. It's ridiculous that all the improvements being made to Visual Studio don't apply to the project types used in the vast majority of development.

  7. Alphabetize/Sort Solution File Contents To Reduce Merge Conflicts

Solution Files (SLN) Should Be Sorted/Alphabetized to reduce 3-way merge conflicts. This was requested here https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio-ide/suggestions/4130464-organize-project-xml-files-to-reduce-3-way-merge-c for Project files; but should be extended to Solution Files as well.

  8. Provide support for "scratch" projects

I create on average 2 projects a week that are used for one-offs: researching a fine detail, demonstrating a problem, answering a question on StackOverflow, etc. After I am done with them, these projects are unimportant and can be deleted or completely rewritten since the important code will have been moved out. I have a dedicated space on my filesystem for these temporary projects, but I don't always bother cleaning it up, and because of the large number of projects (temporary and otherwise) that I work with, navigation to and from these projects isn't always a simple task, especially since…

  9. Add a NuGet section into Add Reference dialog to show assemblies from installed packages

Add a NuGet section into Add Reference dialog to show there assemblies from installed packages.
When you retarget a PCL library usually you need to reinstall NuGet packages to reference correct assemblies. Or if the target PCL profile differ for you PCL library and for your app you need to manually add correct reference from NuGet package folder. So you need to browse for it which is very annoying!

  10. Improve interaction with MSBuild project files.

This is a general set of suggestions to overall improve the relationship between the Visual Studio project system and MSBuild.

    - Have Visual Studio respect wildcards in MSBuild includes.
    - Map ItemGroups to project Filters - if a file is added to a Filter in Visual Studio, it should be added to the same ItemGroup in the project file.
    - The above should also be true if the ItemGroup happens to be in an Import-ed project file. This would allow large complex projects to be defined across a group of MSBuild files.
    - Allow Item Metadata to be attached to…

  12. Add support for QT and GTK, KDE Controls

I use many languages, and many operating systems, if you add support for QT and GTK controls among others, .net would be used on many more machines and since 4 of the languages I already use are in Visual Studio it would help me and others to not have to use 10 different IDE's, just a thought

  13. CMake / OpenFolder: (only) show added_subdirectories

When using CMake it'd be nice to
optionally see only folders that are known to CMake by add_subdirectory
and see added_subdirectories() outside of the opened folder.

The latter point might be related to

  14. Add a solution of solutions for very large codebases

I have recently worked on projects which are comprised of up to 15 different Visual Studio solutions which can lead to having 15 instances of VS open at the same time! This gets extremely confusing. However, as each solution is a black box to the others the structure makes sense, but once built they combine to form one deployable application platform.

A solution to this could be a "super solution" or "ecosystem" which would be a solution for the solutions. The root of Solution Explorer would be the "Ecosystem" with child solutions. Unlike projects the child solutions should *not* be…

  15. save all project's property sheets as file and allow its use as default for new projects

in a VS project its possible to Import property sheets, which is great. But its not possible to save all currently used property sheets to a file, which then could be imported as "Default Properties" in a new created project.
So for example I want the "intermediate directory" Setting always be somethere in the TEMP folder, so I have to chane this setting each time I create a new project. It would be easier to load a Default property Setting on creation of a new project

  18. Catalog usage/history of third party libraries

Most organizations have scattered development teams, with different teams/individuals looking into usage of different third party libraries(including Microsoft technologies). Once a developer/team spends time understanding the scope/usage of a third party library or parts of it, it is cost effective for the organization to share/learn that knowledge.

If Visual Studio IDE can track/publish(for internal purposes only), such usage references to third party libraries along with the history of the developer/s who touched upon the topic, it could be a very useful and cost effective tool for the organization to leverage that knowledge and share it across necessary development teams.

    Though…

  20. visual studio and sql type of project for big data

I have 700GB text file with insert tsql into one table only.
When I try to parse and deploy into my mssql server with visual studio it shown error. Why you not use batch feature to fix that?

    Steps to reproduce the bug:
    1. Create new sql project with vs2017
    2. Import script from folder or file
    3. Wait to see result... it shown error message
you can try with smaller t-sql script file for example 80GB. I have 64GB RAM on my machine and 100TB HD.

The problem is that implementation for big data in VS is missing, just…
