Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Update AttachedPropertyService to support ModelItem instance specific properties

I have a custom activity that (originally) used the AttachedPropertyService to dynamically add properties to the activity based on its state. This didn't work because the AttachedPropertyService only supports adding properties to the activity type, not an instance of the activity/ModelItem.

This is in contrast to how attached properties are used in WPF where the properties are attached to an instance of a type based on its context (button in a grid for example). The properties are not attached to all instances of the type of the object.

The AttachedPropertyService should also allow properties to be detached as required (because…

  2. Add a 'Find References' to Workflow Editor

It would be great if the Workflow Designer has a feature where you can select a Variable or an Argument, right click, and select "Find All References" (Similar to how you can do it in the Code Editor).

As far as the UI for this, maybe the results can be shown in a Tree Hierarchy. This will help show the scope of the Variable or Argument.

  3. Add useful properties to WorkflowInstanceRecord

I would like the WorkflowInstanceRecord to contain a subset of the fields that are stored in the InstanceStore InstancesTable. Useful fields would include: IsInitialized, IsSuspended, SuspensionReason, and (especially) BlockingBookmarks.

This would be very useful for building applications that present different options to the application user based on the 'state' of the workflow.

  6. using

I wish to have a "Using Container" activity in toolbox. This should call dispose of each containing IDisposable types at end of it automatically.

  7. Fix "toolbox" - it frequently slides out and only the top of it is visible.

While working in a WF solution, sliding out the toolbar seems to have gotten corrupted as it only shows the top bar until I pin it to the UI. Please fix.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  8. Error notification and restart last activity for workflows

It would be great to configure a data source with the list of administrators emails to automatically send error notifications and pause workflow execution.
This configuration could be allowed for at least Custom Code execution activities.
After administrator reads an error notification it can make a decision - to restart last activity (for example after DB connection problem solved) or to terminate workflow. For both operations Workflow must have external events built in that automatically forwards restart signal to the failed code activity.
Especially error handling improvements is needed in State Machine workflow types.

  9. Create an Attribute for Toolbox Custom Activity Icons

It would be great if adding an embeddeed Icon in a Custom Activity were as simple as

    1. Including the Icon in the Custom Activity Assembly
    2. At the top of the inherited CodeActivity add something like

    [ToolboxIcon("MyEmbeddedFile.ico")]
public sealed class MyCustomActivity : CodeActivity
    {
    ...
    }
