Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: This forum has been migrated to provide our customers one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. You can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas in the Visual Studio Developer Community. To learn more about the migration to Visual Studio Developer Community please check out the release blog post.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Support Adding Workflow Activities to Toolbox Using Toolbox Controls Installer

Third-party builders of workflow activities (like for TFS Build) would like to be able to add their workflow activities to the Workflow Designer Toolbox by either having end users install our activity package using a VSIX deployment (using the Visual Studio Gallery) or by an MSI Installer.

This process would be similar to the way other third-party component vendors are able to add to the toolbox for WinForms, ASP.NET, Silverilght, WPF, etc. controls. We would like the same functionality for Workflow Activities.

          • Use BPMN Core activities to UI Acitivity Design

UI Workflow Foundation it´s not natural for Business Man.
We host workflow designer in our software and our power users and business man can make workflows, but everyone doesn´t like the UI because they already know BPMN.

              • Allow the FlowDecision designer outputs to be customized.

My question is about the Flow Decision designer object. Can I change the sides that the "True", "False", and Inputs come from? Currently, True is always to the left, False on the Right, and input is at the top or the bottom. Naturally some flows become very "Messy" because of this. I know that I can always 'Not' the condition to switch the true and false, but that is sloppy. Thanks!

Make the Expression Editor remember size and position so I don't have to resize the window every time again when I enter a large expression. Or make at least default size bigger.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

                  • Add support for comment and TODO metadata for the xaml

Obviously comments have their place and should not be over-used. XAML activities unfortunately have no support for them however. Trying to comment reasoning for a workflow implementation is not possible without using an activity to express it.

Having support for annotations against activities/artifacts in a workflow would prevent executable activities being used for this purpose.

                    • Make the Workflow Foundation Designer Faster

The Workflow Foundation designer is particularly terrible whenever dealing with large workflows. A perfect example is the default build process template XAML file that comes with TFS Build.

Despite our best efforts and preventative measures, sometimes the only thing to be done is get in and fiddle the data. If we change a complex type that happens to have been used in a workflow in such a way that breaks deserialization, a workflow might not find out until some time after deployment. At this point it is too late to back out as other workflows etc have been created on the new type structure.

I have only managed to figure out a way to view the data in the persistence store (SQL provider), I would like to be…

                        • Generate dynamic upgrade maps for persisted workflow instances via the designer

Currently, we can only dynamically upgrade persisted workflow via code. This is because in WF 4.5 there is no designer support for the workflow definition update phase (designated as phase number 2 on this page http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh314052.aspx). Considering one of the key selling points of the framework is the workflow designer, it is surprising that no support exists for dynamic updates.

                          • Allow "commenting out" activities

The base Activity class should have an IsEnabled property. If true at design time, the WF designer should "gray out" the Activity. If true at runtime, this should cause the activity to bypass execution.

This would be very useful for debugging - the WF equivalent of commenting out code.

                                  • Display a workflow as pseudocode instead of the visual designer.

Add the ability to work with a workflow as code in the VS IDE...

Or - have the ability to write code in C# / VB and have it compile into a workflow which can be run in workflow foundation.

Many people write programs in c# and VB, doesn't it make sense that an entire workflow should be able to be written in one of those languages? XAML is a hard language to write a workflow in as it is very verbose when coding, and the visual designer can be much more difficult to work with than a textual language.

                                    • Workflow designer activity property grid editor should indicate if arguments are in, out or inout

When editing workflow activity arguments in the property grid editor there is no clear distinction between what is an in or out argument. It would be useful to see some kind of indicator to distinguish between the types of arguments. It also might help quickly locate the Result property for activities that return results - when there are many arguments the Result property is located in its alphabetical location. For an activity with many arguments (10+) it can sometimes be hard to locate quickly. A visual cue would help a little.

                                      • Provide a framework for long running human workflows

It is really a common requirement, in my experience, for LOB systems to provide support for human workflows (tasklists & queues).

Currently, to achieve this with WF, requires a lot of up-front custom code to be developed. It would be especially helpful if this could be released with out-of-the-box ASP.Net MVC integration.

                                        • Support nested types in Windows Workflow XAML

The current Windows Workflow design surface does not support nested types, but these are perfectly valid as an InArgument or OutArgument in a CodeActivity.

                                          The two issues are:

                                          1. Arguments or Variables in a XAML workflow cannot be of type SomeType.SomeOtherType and this happens often when we use 3rd party libraries or COM-callable wrappers
                                          2. Trying to write any expression that involves a nested type which is serialized to XAML(and generates a <file>.g.cs) throws a designer error, even though this is perfectly valid code.

This is terribly inconsistent and sometimes makes me reconsider choosing WF when with this feature it…
