  1. Add some color to Visual Studio 2012

Usability studies have shown that both shape and color help to distinguis visual elements in a UI. The upcoming/current beta release of Visual Studio 2011 has removed color from the toolbars and from icons in e.g. the Solution Explorer.

Please make this optional so those of us that want a more accessible and user friendly IDE can have their cake and eat it too.

      Updated Status: 7/2/2013

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has increased color and contrast use within the user interface while continuing to focus on giving the content you are creating and editing visual prominence. We’ve utilized the feedback you gave us to help refine our approach to color and contrast within three main areas: 1) we added color to icons and reduced line weights to improve icon scan-ability and to better communicate icon meaning and categorization; 2) we added line work and raised contrast levels to increase visual separation between screen regions; 3) we included a built-in “Blue” theme option at product first launch to better support user choice.

In keeping with these three areas we have made many changes to the Visual Studio 2013 built-in themes. In high utilization and icon intensive areas of the product, such as common toolbar actions and…

    • Bring Back Full-Color Icons to Visual Studio 2012

The mostly black & gray glyphs used in Visual Studio 2012 are very difficult to distinguish between. Familiar icons that we have known and used for years are now gone, and it takes (wastes!) a ton of time trying to find the right icon/command/object. Please bring back the tried-and-true, full-color icons that clearly represent each command/object and are easily identifiable.

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has added color in several broad reaching icon categories. We classified the icons we focused on into three sets: icons which represent common actions, icons which indicate code hierarchy, and icons that provide some kind of notification. By utilizing a systematic and broadly applicable approach to color use we are better able to effectively convey critical meaning or affiliation through color, to attract attention through color, and to improve scan-ability through color. This approach translates into color being applied to ~80% of standard toolbar and debug toolbar icons, ~75% of code hierarchy icons, and 100% of active notifications.

Based upon the design goals outlined above and design decisions reflected in the existing scheme for each of the core icon sets we will continue to apply and extend our approach to icon colorization as we move forward. As…

We are happy to share that we have made changes to the Menu Bar style in Visual Studio. In Visual Studio “14” CTP2 Menu Bar shows in Title Case and in Visual Studio 2013 Update 3 RC we have added a tools options control for you to pick Title Case styling or All Caps styling for the Menu Bar. Please refer to the following announcements for details –

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Keeping with a Microsoft-wide emphasis on typography and casing as a key structure-defining element, we are retaining all caps casing as our default within the Visual Studio top level menu…

        • Leave VS 2010 theme (and the theme editor extension) as an option

When you came out with the VS 2010 theme, you said that it allowed you to focus on the code windows. The benefit that the theme provided hasn't changed, so please allow that theme to stay in VS 11, as well as the "Color Theme Editor" extension by Matthew Johnson (http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/20cd93a2-c435-4d00-a797-499f16402378) so those that want to tweak or even choose another theme can do so. Please don't force us to use a "metro style" theme (even if you add some color). You worked so hard to create a good looking 2010 theme, don't throw it away...that would be…

I’m going to mark this as completed so you can get your votes back – note that Matthew Johnson has released a VS 2012 color theme editor as you requested (link below) – I know it doesn’t have everything you requested in this idea, but hopefully this helps to address your feedback.

            thanks,

Please change the icon of Visual Studio 2015 to enable differentiation on the taskbar when multiple versions of Visual Studio are installed. Currently the Visual Studio 2013 and Visual Studio 2015 icon are the same and causing confusion if put side by side on the taskbar (see attachment)

We have exciting news to share! We were able to get an updated icon into Update 1 which will be available for download later this month (November). We appreciate the passion around this and for sharing your specific scenarios with us where this is frustrating so we could fully understand the impact this has to your daily work.

You can find a screenshot of what the Visual Studio 2015 icon will look like when pinned or running next to the Visual Studio 2013 icon here (http://aka.ms/vsicon2015). We’ve already shared this with a handful of developers in the community who are pleased with the visual differences, but please continue to let us know what you think too.

              Happy coding!

            • Please, Please, Let us have VS2010 theme in VS2012

The new themes of VS 2012 brings headache(no insult, its personal). Please give us an option to select VS2010 theme with colorful icons.
Its really really hard to work with new themes.

              • More themes in VS 2012 or Allow end user to set UI colors

Please add more themes with Visual Studio 2012.

Light and Dark both induce eyestrain.

Or here is an idea. Have sliders that let the user pick exactly which colors they want for all UI elements.

Even just window color and title bar color would be a start, and an option to set border color too.

As it is I'm actually considering purchasing VS 2010 over 2012 as I find 2012 nigh on unusable.

Many developers work in dark color shemes of VS like obsidian, but it's impossible to customize colors of solution explorer, it's very uncomfortable when your eyes have to switch from dark to white background

                  • Visual Studio 2012 Dark Theme should have darker backgrounds

The dark theme in VS2012 is a welcomed feature in Visual Studio, but the backgrounds are way to bright. Being gray not dark. This means the contrast is poor to the foreground color (or lack thereof).

There are basically two dark background colors. One for the main window and one for sub windows (such as SOLUTION EXPLORER or similar). The sub windows get a brighter background. These especially incl the text editor should have darker backgrounds instead.

Hopefully, if these colors will not be changed, at least VS2012 should have a theme editor to fix this design mistake.

                    • create solution without folder

This fix should take you literally SECONDS to fix.

It's 2016. And you STILL do not allow users to create a solution file in the **** folder they selected, you FORCE the creation of a sub folder which is often not required.

Then we need to close VS. Move the solution file BACK to the correct location, then open it up just to start using it.

All you need to do is allow us to untick this 1 tick box.

Hi Folks – In Visual Studio 2013, we have added a customizable color for the Output Window hyperlinks. Go to Tools > Options, Environment > Fonts and Colors and change the settings for the Output Window. You should notice a URL Hyperlink item there. We also adjusted the default color of the hyperlinks to add better contrast in the dark theme, but you can always change it to suit your needs.

                          Thanks!

Please allow the Test Explorer to group by namespaces as a hierarchy.
I would made a lot easier to organize our unit tests.

The traits feature is hard to maintain. Our current solution is to encode this organization on the tests names, but the best would be for Visual Studio to be able to do the grouping.

Many smal, black icons, which looks very much alike and headers in pure capital letters, which makes them more difficult to read reduces the productivity of the users.
At least give the users the posibility to use a 'VS2010' skin

The "flatness" of the new user interface makes it impossible to look at the screen and know exactly what is a splitter bar. They simply blend in with the rest of the interface. The only way to find a splitter bar is to move the mouse around until the pointer changes.

I am constantly resizing my splitter panels to go between viewing code and viewing stack traces, errors, and other output messages. Having to "find" the splitter each time slows me down so this is a productivity issue more than an eye candy issue.

In summary, please paint the splitter…

                                  Hi,

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented on this issue. Visual Studio 2013 has additional separator lines and raised contrast levels which increase visual separation between screen regions. This causes the splitter bars to be more prominent and makes them easily identifiable hit targets.

The color of the statusbar is to hard in relation to the rest of visual studio 2012.

                                  • Linux Console Window - Autoscroll Option

Linux Console Window should have the option to enable automatic scrolling to follow the most recent output even if the window is out of focus.

Currently it will only autoscroll if the window is in focus and the cursor is at the end, if a breakpoint is hit and the console window is in the background it will not continue to scroll to the most recent lines.

                                      • Remove Microsoft Account Requirement for K-12 EDU Deployment Scenarios

We would like to deploy Visual Studio Community Edition to many schools (thousands of locations) using App-V. The requirement of a Microsoft Account is a blocker for deployment because VS stops working after 30 days without attaching an MS account for every user. I believe a patch was available for previous versions of VS that removed the MS account requirement. Can something like this be made available to educational institutions?

                                        • Please add more button images to the VS Image Library

The existing content is hardly not enough for allmost any application. There's no sense to use it because usually I can get only 10-30% of the required icons from there.
