I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  2. Systematic Approach to MS SQL Server Database Recovery Process

The DBA Needs to follow different approach to manage secure and protect their SQL Server database. The generalization of the whole process is elaborated to Check, Repair and Restore the MS SQL data.

Database Integrity check: The MS SQL Server’s stored procedure “DatabaseIntegrityCheck” should be performed on regular interval of time to check database corruption issues. To check the database integrity of all users, executive the following code:

    EXECUTE dbo.DatabaseIntegrityCheck
    @Databases = 'USER_DATABASES',
    @CheckCommands = 'CHECKDB'

Backup Planning: Use DatabaseBackup stored procedure for the purpose of backing up your database securely to the desired location. The following method will create…

  3. Enhance SSIS package execution error reporting

Improve SSIS error reporting by including a popup or error viewer control so that when an error occurs in the package execution, the developer does not have to keep right clicking and copying the error message and pasting into notepad to fully read it.

  4. Have SSRS focus only on the current report when previewing.

When previewing a report in SSRS, the entire project is built causing extraneous errors to pop up from other reports that may be still in the design stage, errors that have nothing to do with the report being previewed.

Further, I presume - as preview automatically SAVES a report when it is previewed, that all those other reports in a project are being saved as well, when any one of them is previewed, even if those reports are being worked on by others.

Suppose the other reports are not ready to be saved, yet? The system does so anyway and…

The Schema Comparison utility. An great improvement would be to change the execution order of the "Write Updates" function. Now executing Stored Procedures and then User Defined Functions, since UDF is often used in SP's it would make greater sense executing the other way round. Keep up the good work.

  8. Ling As SQL

Make it possible to send Linq expression trees directly to storages optimizer and use investment put into it rather than encdecode SQL. With original Expression tree optimizer will have more information it needs rather than trying to understand generated SQL.

Thanks for taking the time to share this suggestion. This item has been around for a couple of versions of Visual Studio and we haven’t acted on it. Looking at the VS “15” plans, we’re not going to take action on this item, so we’re going to close it. If the suggestion is still relevant, please either take a look to see if there’s another suggestion that’s similar that you can vote on, or open a new suggestion.

  11. Handle import of Extended Properties on SQL objects In Visual Studio 2010 DB Projects

When creating a data dictionary we utilize the extended properties on objects and a third party tool to organize the extended properties for display. Currently when I import a script of extended properties into a database project using the "import script" action, the objects are placed in their own files using the name "MS_Description". This is a bit frustrating. I'm proposing that the extended properties are actually put into the objects that they are providing detail about. My work around right now (other than cutting/pasting in the target objects file) is to create a single file with all the extended…

  12. Provide a keyboard shortcut or keyboard-accessible menu sequence for a new SQL query.

When editing a database within Visual Studio, such as when double-clicking a generated LocalDB database, it would be ideal to have a simple keyboard shortcut to facilitate opening a new SQL query window similar to SSMS's Ctrl-N "New Query" command. Even if it was a sequence such as Alt+Q (SQL menu), there is no shortcut key assigned to the "Transact-SQL Editor" submenu option.

  15. Database project compiler should check conformance of indexes with table partitions

Unique indexes on partitioned tables have to contain the partition key. Currently the compiler does not detect non-conformance with this rule, and errors are only flagged when creating the objects on SQL Server.

  16. Create a simple database project for those that only want to save files to source control

I prefer to create my deployment scripts with a SQL Compare tool. For development, I just want to be able to check my code into some source control. I essentially want a project similar to SSMS projects. The current database projects in Visual Studio is way to complicated for my scenario. I currently use the blank C++ project for my database work. I would like to see multiple database project templates and one of them match a basic SSMS style project.

  17. Data Generation Plan in Database Project

SQL connection string should be project level in Data Generation Plan for source connection same like web.config for application. Currently I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 db project.

Problem Area : I am using sequence data bound generator in data generation plan. I don’t want to set database name or user name level information at column level. Please let me know the best way to setup connection information at project level.

    Regards,
    Inder Dureja

  18. Allow ALTER statement for files in DB project

Currently when we make a change to a single object such as stored procedure, view, function , trigger we need to switch the CREATE statement to ALTER, apply the change and then switch back the ALTER to CREATE. Failure to do so results in an error "SQL03070: The statement is not recognized in this context". This causes build to fail. The ALTER at the beginning should be allowed atleast for objects that frequently modified such as stored procedures, views, triggers and functions.

We would like to enourage a practice where developers can check out the object from the DB project inTFS,…

  19. Add View Designer and Database Diagram Designer for Studio 2012

Please add the View designer and Database Diagram designer to Studio 2012. I know these features are available in Management Studio, but you cant work on your database with it while Studio is open which is a big inconvenience.

Studio 2010 had these extremely useful features.
