Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Support Silverlight projects in Visual Studio 2017

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351486/support-silverlight-projects-in-visual-studio-2017.html
I was shocked to discover this by accident while evaluating 2017 to prepare for an upgrade from 2015. I am supporting several live Silverlight projects that are likely to have a lifespan of at least a few more years. This an upgrade blocker for me, and I was really looking forward to 2017.

Perhaps support could be provided as an extension in a similar way to how support for vdproj (setup) projects was restored.

  2. OOTB Rust programming langague support

The new Rust programming language is developed by Mozilla.

    http://www.rust-lang.org/
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_(programming_language)

It gives a very solid infrastructure to write APIs (perhaps even with ABI style).

It has some advantages over C APIs, and the compiled code is as low-level as that of C/C++.

Please provide OOTB support for Rust in Visual Studio.

    Thanks.

  4. Add Java support to Visual Studio

With Microsoft's recent giant leaps forward into supporting Open Source technologies and platforms, I believe time is ripe for Microsoft to add support to Visual Studio for building Java applications.

History is history - time to move forward: Java is a reality and is very widely used to build server-side technologies in particular.

While IntelliJ is pretty good and Eclipse does it's job, NOTHING comes close to the enormous power and flexibility of Visual Studio and its practically unbeatable editor, window layout mechanisms, debugger, code introspection tooling, etc.

I believe that in adding Java support, Microsoft could expose Visual Studio…

  5. enable developers to create Subfolder-Structures within BIDS SSRS Projects

enable developers to create Subfolder-Structures within BIDS SSRS Projects. Currently with VS2008 BIDS it is not possible to organize reports with folders in Visual studio. If you have SSRS projects with many reports, and you want to deploy reports to different subfolders on ssrs server this would be really helpful!

  7. Enable Roslyn-Powered Code Views

This vote is for developers who support the idea of Roslyn-Powered Code Views. Code Views are a conceptual improvement to the way Visual Studio renders code to a developer, and how a developer works with that code.

Opening a file: To load a Code View, code is loaded into memory and parsed as a Roslyn AST. From there, it is processed through a developer's Code Formatting Profile to render the code to the developer as they prefer it. This includes such things as spacing (spaces or tabs), documentation (on or off), and characters/symbols around fields (underscores or even Hungarian notation…

  9. YAML "in addition to" JSON

YAML is recursive acronym of "YAML ain't a markup language"

    YAML specs: http://www.yaml.org/spec/
    File extension: .yml or .yaml

    Why YAML:

Microsoft was backing XML, while the whole (other) world moved from XML to JSON (a key-value pair format with less footprints and noise). Microsoft was _still_ backing XML while the rest of the world move from JSON to YAML (another key-value pair format with minimalistic footprints and noise).

All those folks suggesting "JSON is new XML" must be living in pervious century: JSON is OLD XML and YAML is new JSON!

In VS2013 Update 2, Visual studio team (with WebDev)…

  10. Allow loading NuGet assemblies from t4 files

T4 is great but very limited in terms of the assemblies it can reference. You can only use assemblies in the GAC, or assemblies you have the absolute path for. However these days dependency management is done via NuGet and such dependencies don't go into the GAC. In addition, their path changes as versions are bumped. It would be very beneficial to support NuGet packages in t4 files, possibly by extending the "assembly" directive or even creating a new directive. For example:

    <#@ nuget name="Newtonsoft.Json" version="9.0.1" #>

  11. Create your own Ada support capable of surpassing the GPL-only .NET

Dear Microsoft, Create your own Ada support for .NET, capable of surpassing the GPL-only "A#" aka Ada for .NET.

Two facts are evidence that the worlds programming conventions, as great as they have become, are growing stagnant. (1.) Languages derived or fashioned after C are familiar, but mostly designed to do what C cannot. C# is an example of great accomplishment in C-fashion programming. Still, always creating something new, and then upgrading it is an unstable way further development. The problem lies in C being too primitive and too vague. (2.) Microsoft's .NET is possibly the greatest cross-platform accomplishment since…

  12. Add support for Swift language

Swift language is now open source (see swift.org). It's good moment to add support for at least compilation into .exe. It should also be an alternative to ObjC bridge as much more modern language. Both things can make cross development much easier.

  13. Integrate NTVS into Visual Studio and/or put more resources into NTVS

NTVS is an indispensable part of modern JavaScript development work. At the moment updates to NTVS are few are far between.

I would like NTVS to receive the same kind of attention as ASP.net - if not more.

  18. Just like Community editions. It is a good news for xbase programmers, if MicroSoft add Visual Foxpro

I am just using Visual Studio Community Version 2017. Its a great tool. Microsoft initiative towards community editions is impressive. If Visual FoxPro is also added in community editions side by side, it is good for thousand of xbase programmers.

  19. Add support for threads.h from C11

Threading is a pretty fundamental feature for any modern program, and it sucks that there's really no good cross platform support for threading.

there's POSIX Threads, which are still a separate third party library, that windows does not support, and C11 really simplifies that by including it built into the language.

Really the only difficult part would be adding support for the tertiary features, like stdatomic.

A few standard libraries already support it, like musl, and PDCLib, but support isn't quite as common as it should be.

  20. Support Python Drag-And-Drop

Although I am quite impressed with the ease of use and programming language support in Visual Studio, I would like to see Python GUI development via Dragging-and-Dropping controls on the Python window. A good library for this is Tkinter. There are many other IDEs that already allow this. For Visual Studio to compete as a product for universal program development, it must be able to do this. Python is very powerful like C#, but is cross-platform, meaning a higher user share.
