Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: Last fall, we migrated this forum to Visual Studio Developer Community to provide you one convenient and responsive system for all feedback. As the final step in the migration, this forum will be closed off completely on June 1st, 2019. We encourage you to visit Visual Studio Developer Community where you can now suggest new ideas, browse and vote on existing ideas, and engage with Visual Studio teams.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  3. Task runner explorer keyboard shortcuts

I would like to be able to bind a gulp or grunt task in the task runner explorer to a keyboard shortcut so that I don't have to use a mouse to run my tasks.

  4. Allow Visual Studio to modify its colors when running under Windows 8 High Contrast Themes

When running windows in high contrast mode, visual studio changes the color theme to "High Contrast" and does not allow it to be changed. This should be allowed if someone wants to deviate from high contrast mode.

  6. Coding by voice

Full support for coding by voice using either window speech recognition or Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

For example you should be able to say a customisable command, consisting of language and category like :

    Visual Basic Statements

and a list of statements will appear on the screen where you can choose an item by saying a number or the name of the item (For Next Loop for example). The code snippet would then be inserted into the current location in the IDE. And the most appropriate item that needs changing will be selected in the IDE.

  7. Provide a Command palette like VS code

I really love the VS code command palette (Ctrl+Maj+P) when I would like to do something without remembering the shortcut, For exemple adding cursors...

A such thing should be really great in VS2015

  10. whether could capture the ToolTip service message of UWP control with Coded UI Test Builder

Coded UI for ToolTip, whether could add a property to UITestControl that we could get the ToolTip message of a UWP control ToolTip service. Because when the mouse leave the control, the ToolTip message will disappear, so we could not capture it with cross button in Test Builder. Please refer to the following thread.

    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/5ad7e9b0-af3b-439c-8f7f-2d08d8bf3847/can-not-find-tooltip-from-codedui-test-uwp-app?forum=vstest

  11. Support syntax highligh rendered markdown, its currently only supported while editing the md file

While editing a markdown file online in VSO you can see that the syntax highlight works for the fenced block of code (see attached screen shoot).

however when you are done editing and the actual rendering of the markdown file is shown. the syntax highlighting disappears (see second attachement).

it is obvious syntax highlighting is possible for the language, both because it is doing it in the editing form, and because VSO can render other CSharp files with syntax highlighting.

  13. Allow users to disable IntelliSense transparency on CTRL

IntelliSense going transparent when you hold CTRL is a nice feature, however it blocks users from using CTRL as modifier for movement in the editor.

For example: using CTRL+I for line up will cause the intellisense window to go transparent when trying to navigate.

Allow users either the ability to disable this feature or even better, rebind it. Binding a feature that is not re-bindable to an important modifier key is restrictive.

  15. Option to change Intellisense Quick Info parameter font

I would like to be able to change the font of the current parameter/parameter name in the Intellisense Quick Info.

If there's a large number of parameters needed I just cannot see the bold sticking out enough in the dark theme. I can see it better with the light or blue theme enabled but I prefer the dark because it doesn't cause eye strain.

What I would like is to be able to change the "float g", or just the "g" (As in the attached image) to be more visible while leaving the other parameters in the list the same.…

  16. Ctrl + E focus on "filter processes" in "Attach to process" windows

Almost all windows application has the shortcut Ctrl + E to focus on the filter/search box. (try in windows explorer, windows store etc...)

It would be awesome to have the following for the Attach to Process dialog.

    Scenario:
    1. Ctrl + Alt + P
    2. Ctrl + E
    3. My process.exe
    4. Tab
    5. OK

  17. Accessibility support for reading code, better debugging, etc.

It would be convenient if screen readers could report the levels of indentation we're in. For example, when we press "enter" inside a C# class, the reader would say, "Cursor at class leve; cursor at method level." Also, we would like auditory feedback when red squiggles appear; the reader would say, "Syntax error."

Perhaps a tool that could narrate debugging sessions as the program runs.

  18. Improve the accessibility for screen readers for both the web and Visual Studio UI.

The web interface for Visual Studio Online is quite ppor with regards to using accessible standards for visually impaired screen reader users. Tabular information is not displayed using tables and many links and controls do not render as controls to a screen reader, but appear like plain text. Please consider the visually impaired screen reader user whenever developing web interfaces. The UI displayed within Visual Studio itself is very poor since the move to WPF and needs considerably more thought to make it work properly with screen readers.

  19. Add better color options for colorblind people.

It's not the background or foreground text that gives me trouble, it's the little squiggles that show an error or a warning under text. Someone told me these are different colors, and I can't tell if something is an error or a warning. I looked in the settings and didn't see anything to change them.

    Example;
int number; (this will have squiggles under it)

The variable 'number' is declared but never used.
