Visual Studio IDE

Announcement: In the beginning of October, we will move ideas to the Visual Studio Developer Community where users already report and track their issues. We’ll track them using a brand new suggestion experience which will preserve the current number of votes and supporters as tags . These numbers will continue to be used in understanding the community impact of the ideas. The move is aimed at providing a single platform for all your feedback and improve your engagement with Visual Studio product teams. After the move, this UserVoice site will become read only and new suggestions can be added on Developer Community.

We’d like your suggestions and ideas to help us continuously improve future releases of Visual Studio, so we’ve partnered with UserVoice, a third-party service, to collect your feedback. Please do not send any novel or patentable ideas, copyrighted materials, samples or demos for which you do not want to grant a license to Microsoft.

This site is for feature suggestions; if you need to file a bug, you can visit our Developer Community website to get started.

Note: your use of the portal and your submission is subject to the UserVoice Terms of Service & Privacy Policy and license terms.

We look forward to hearing from you!
- The Visual Studio Team

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Unpromote package from Release view at TFS 2018

    I add package to feed with version 1 and promote it to @Release view.

    Then, i add package to feed with version 2 and promote it to @Release_1.

    Then, i want to remove package from @Release_1 view (and, may be, promote it to @Release_2 ) . But i can not find how to do that

    • a way of highligthing what parameter is of the wrong type in a method invocation

      I often find i have somehow input the wrong parameter type into a method and its very hard to track down which actual parameter is wrong..

      it can be something as simple as inputting a user type from one name space when its ment to be from another... or a string where its supposed to be a guid...

      and visual studio tend not to give very good advice about what argument is off...

      some highligthing would be neat... though considering overloads this might need some way of spinning through multiple overloads to see what argument conflic with any given overload

        • Add Ctr-F find to the text debug inspector

          The text debug inspector is great for looking into strings or log in memory, what would make it assume is if the Ctrl-F quick find function worked in it, so for big bits of text we could skip to keywords etc.

          • Surround With dialog should contain <p> and <li>

            These are common tags for wrapping around text, especially if that text has been pasted in from elsewhere (e.g. MS Word).

            • Add search or filter feature for "Multiple startup projects" dialog

              In large projects it can be difficult to find the projects I want to set to start. I would like if you could make finding those projects I want a little easier by having a search/filter feature included in that dialog.

              Thanks

              • Another crazy Idea: use our own tools! (Copy Product keys in visualstudio.com????)

                Hello
                The M$ nightmare goes faster than even we had feared:
                If we request a product key in visualstudio.com, we can no longer copy it.
                There is no copy button, nor is it possible to select text.

                Are you testing your websites?

                It would be great if M$ would use it's own "great" stuff.

                Kind regards, Thomas

                  • Add the ability to convert the use of "var" to the expanded declaration:

                    Add the ability to convert the use of "var" to the expanded declaration:

                    var i = 5;

                    hovering over i, intellisense tells us this is an int. Please add the ability to convert the "var" to it's expanded declared type (i.e int in this example).

                    • 프로젝트 설치 시 문제점 개선

                      프로젝트를 만들려고 보니 솔루션 선택 시에 나와야 할
                      Win32 콘솔 응용 프로그램이 보이지 않아
                      따로 찾아 설치하려 들어갔습니다만
                      이를 설치시 한 곳으로 사용자 지정이 아닌 지정된 곳만
                      설치가 가능하도록 되있어서 용량 문제를 개선할 수가 없습니다.
                      이를 개선해서 사용자 지정으로 만들어 주시길 기대합니다.

                      • Suggestion: Setting ColumnDefition and RowDefintion from Style Template

                        make it possible to add the follow code:

                        <Grid.RowDefinitions>
                        <RowDefinition Height="auto"/>
                        <RowDefinition Height="*"/>
                        <RowDefinition Height="auto"/>
                        </Grid.RowDefinitions>

                        into a Style / Setter template for a Grid?? and then automatically setup the RowDefitions for a grid like this?

                        <Grid style="{StaticResource MyRowDefs}">
                        <Button Grid.Row="0" Content="Button1/>
                        <TextBox Grid.Row="1"/>
                        <Button Grid.Row="2" Content="Button2/>

                        • Question regarding _set_se_translator... Is there anyway to get the source file name, function name, and line number?

                          I would suggest adding support where the translator function could have the function name, source file name, and the line number where the exception occurred.

                            Why is there no option to make the toolbar buttons larger? See https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/eaf0e7eb-cb8d-4e1a-8d17-a7a56a0daf6f/visual-studio-2010-toolbar-large-icons?forum=vssetup . I feel the same way. A simple feature removed. You should have a better Human Centered Design group.

                            • Move System.Reactive.Unit to System

                              When I'm trying to code in a more functional style, I sometimes need to return Unit from a method instead of void (or anything to signify "I don't care about the actual value", Unit just fits the bill). I would appreciate if I could do that without pulling the entire System.Reactive package.

                                    • Toggle just-my-code for selections made either in solution explorer or highlighted in the text editor.

                                      In my normal development cycle I generally like to run/debug with just-my-code switched on, so as to avoid lots of false positives.
                                      When I'm trying to nail a hard bug, though, I think it would be useful to be able to highlight a section of code in the text editor, or a selection of files in solution explorer and disable (or toggle) just-my-code for just that selection, as it's often the case that I have a good idea which area of code is at fault.

                                        Please provide a different shortcut for breaking a build - most of the keyboards do not have 'Break' key anymore. Ctl + Break is the current one

                                        • Make C++ header extension precedence configurable

                                          Currently you can switch between header and source with ctrl K+O. If you have a .h file, it will work. If you have a .hpp file it will work. If you have both, it will choose the .h file. It would be nice if you could config the IDE to prefer .hpp
