I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Provide a way to reuse files or folders in TFS source control

Most SCC tools provide a way to reuse files or folders in source control.
Solutions such as SVN externals, ClearCase components, Synergy sub-projects etc.
TFS does not provide such a solution and the only way to manage code reuse is by creating complex branching schemes (which call for even more complex an error prone merging) or complex workspace mappings.

    • update the default copy workitem function to allow admins set a default and allow users to set if they want copy links and/or attachments.

I suggest you update the default copy workitem function to allow admins set a default and allow users to set if they want copy links and/or attachments. Therefore when the copy workitem box pops up it would have two check boxes that could be defaulted to be checked out not. the check boxes would be two WorkItemLinkCopyFlag options CopyLinks and CopyFiles.

This would allow the copy function to work much better b/c it would avoid that issue of huge linked workitem counts on workitem that have been copied over and over for each new release/sprint.

      • Replace "Open Command Prompt" with "Open Git Shell" in Team Explorer for Git based repositories

Which should open a PowerShell + Posh-Git console instead of a regular DOS-Shell console. This way it will be easier to work with Git repositories from a command line. Also take a look how "Git Shell" works in "GitHub for Windows" application. We need exactly the same thing which can be opened right from Visual Studio, or even better a PowerShell-based console which would be opened in one of Visual Studio windows (similar to NuGet)

        • Extend Read Only TFS Users to read/edit all work items (or sell new type of CAL)

          Hi,

This is more of a request than a question. Our developers are using TFS (all have MSDN), but in order for the whole company to adopt TFS we need other departments such as customer support and QA to be able to view, create and edit Work Items.

At the moment you only allow non-TFS users to create new items and view only items they have created. This is extremely limiting and means that we need a massive number of CALS for TFS which cost $499 each. It is a crazy cost for a user only accessing work items. These…

All HTML Fileds in TFS 2013 have a Option to maximize the content to Screen.

I would love to see this Feature also for the TestStep Section

            • On the Kanban Board, hovering over a Story Card pops up a the Task Board tasks for that story

I love the Kanban board view of the stories and I love the task board we work from. But when in a scrum it would be very helpful to have the ability to hover or click on the story card and to see the Task board tasks for that story while staying on the Kanban board. I've attached a mockup to illistrate the idea.

              • Service-level agreement (SLA) and Operational-level agreement (OLA) in TFS

TFS requires a fully configurable Service Level Agreement (SLA) module, with support for international time zones. Service Level Triggers define escalation and notification options, which include the pop-up Lync/MSN/Skype Instant messaging, email and even SMS text messages to mobile phones. This would ensure that no call reaches a response or fix deadline without warning being issued to the relevant support staff. In addition, "back-to-back" SLAs must fully supported that monitor the performance of your third-party service providers.

Please consider it for the next release.

                • Continue to improve the Pending Changes window in 2013

The pending changes window is much improved from 2012, but still not as functional as 2010. A few items:
                  - The "extra" stuff at the top takes up too much real estate, even when collapsed. On a laptop screen I have to use 1/3 of my screen to even get to the file list.
                  - Please bring the checkboxes back, or find some other way to let us include/exclude files using the keyboard. We are still developers, after all. The mouse is not our forte.
                  - When a work item is associated (not resolved) with a checkin, it would be…

                  • Allow for build promotions in Team Build

I have several build definitions: CI, Deploy to Staging, and Deploy to Production. I want to be able to execute the Staging and Production builds using the output from the CI build meaning I want to promote CI version 1.2.3.4 to Staging. Then I want to promote CI version 1.2.3.4 to production.

                      • Provide an audit log of changes to TFS build configurations

Currently there is no audit trail for TFS build configuration changes.

Provide an audit UI for changes made to a TFS build definition. The target audience would be administrators who are tracking down changes in build behavior over time to changes in the build definition.

The audit log should provide the following:
                        * the timestamp of the change
                        * something identifying the one who did the change
                        * It would be nice to see a summary of changes.

A rollback option would be even better and could be attached to the audit log (like it is for general TFS 2012…

                        • allow us to have more than 3 projects listed in the project drop down list (TFS Web)

I have many TFS Projects. Basically, when I want to switch to another project, I pretty much always have to click 'Browse All' because the drop down list only shows the last 3 accessed. It would be great to configure how much projects are listed into the drop down list.

The check-in policies for TFS are currently not settable in the Process template.

Some policies should be satisfied every time in our organisation (successful build, comment and associatie to workitem).
At the moment we have to (and don't forget) to set these policies manually on each new project.

Unfortunately, in VS2012, a TFS get operation in Solution Explorer is basically the same as a get operation in Source Control Explorer. In the past, the get operation from Solution Explorer only obtained the files that were in the solution and projects (sln). If you wanted all other files, you used Source Control Explorer. The new design is causing us many problems because we have several files in Source Control that have absolutely nothing to do with the solution build, but have much to do with the product itself. For example, we have many documents and SQL databases that stored…

The board is great in many ways but as a former user of TFS Workbench I miss being able to sort the Product Backlog Items in the scrum board, filter out items based on other criteria than assignment and also see more information such as the backlog priority and TFS ID on the backlog Items without clicking them.

I can understand keeping the user interface simple, but at least let it be optional :)

                                  • Make the 'Duscussion Only' sub-tab in TFS2012 a tab that only shows discussions

The new 'Discussion Only' sub-tab in TFS is a great new feature that I was hoping to be a lot useful for internal communications. However, the information in this tab is still cluttered with state changes, like when resolvning a task with a changeset or associating the workitem during the build.
What would be really useful, is a sub-tab that only shows the manually entered discussions.

                                    • Make builds drop location accessible outside of a company network

We can work with TFS through Internet without a need in a VPN connection. The only problem is a drop location.

The TFS build expects a network share as a drop location, something like \\TFS\BUILDS. This path is included in build reports, "Open Drop Folder" command in Build Explorer, build log, and other places.
The problem is when you are outside of the network you can't access \\TFS\BUILDS network share without a VPN connection.

It would be nice to have an ability to access results of the build (files) remotely.

                                      • Show user remaining time in the Board

When planning you work with the board.
It will be useful to show the remaining time of the user, this way you don't need to the capacity tab every time you need to know how much time has left for that user. In addition you can add a button to add all remaining time to the last task assigned to the user...

                                        • Strong name signing with password

If you want to sign a project with a password protected key the build will fail using the Hosted Build Controller with the following message:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(2482,5): error MSB3325: Cannot import the following key file: file.pfx. The key file may be password protected. To correct this, try to import the certificate again or manually install the certificate to the Strong Name CSP with the following key container name: VS_KEY_1A2B3C4D5E6F1A2B [C:\a\src\projectName\projectName.csproj]

I would like to see an option that allows to upload certificates to the server / manually install the certificate in the Strong Name CSP. So we can build strong named…
