I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. ...develop an empowering Process Template editor!!

The current editor's user experience is a barrier to process improvement through customization of of the template itself. The idea that an out of the box process template will satisfy all customer needs (or even one of the several shipped by MSFT) will be a limiting factor on meaningful and valuable implementations of the product.

    • add folders for build definitions in Team Explorer

I would like to have folders for my build definitions in Team Explorer that allow me to organize and apply batch updates to several definitions at once. I could apply security to the various folders which would be inherited by the build definitions underneath. Batch updates could include regular expression modification of the build definition names, workspace folders, drop locations, and/or projects to build.

      • Add ability to hide/mask fields in a work item based on security/permissions

Currently you can make work item fields READ-ONLY for certain groups of users. We would like to have the ability to hide fields or to mask the value of the field as well based on security permissions.

For example we require our PM's, Dev's and QA's to enter time estimates for enhancements and defects. These are values that we don't want our Sales/Consulting teams and potentially End-Users from seeing.

        • Allow to move more than one file at once in TFS source control

It is currently only possible to move files one by one in TFS source control, which means that it takes a lot of time to move several files from one place to another place. It would be great if one could select multiple files and move them to another place at once.

          • Provide PowerPoint Storyboarding add-in as an individual install

Provide the option as part of the Visual Studio installation to only choose the PowerPoint storyboarding add-in rather than the entire Visual Studio suite. This would be especially useful for graphic designers that may need tools such as PowerPoint storyboarding add-in and not the full version of Visual Studio.

We have included both import and export from Visual Studio Online on our product backlog. Brian has some more information about data export available here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2014/02/21/vs-online-early-adopter-program-extended-to-may-7-2014.aspx

Additionally, this week at TechEd North America we have announced that we have partnered with OpsHub to create a free migration utility to move the most requested data including history from TFS to VSO. You can find out more details on this migration utility that was released here: http://bit.ly/OpsHubBlogPost. We will also continue to include proper import support on our backlog for future investments.

                Thanks!

We’ve made a lot of progress since our last update and will release this feature in TFS 2015 Update 1.

We recently moved the repository selector to the top-level navigation since it will change the hubs you see, such as Pull Requests for Git repositories or Changesets for TFVC repositories. We also added a button to create a Git repository directly from the repository selector, but it’s only enabled for Team Projects with Git right now. When the feature is complete, you will be able to create Git repositories from in a TFVC Team Project and the TFVC repository will be at the top of the repository selector with Git repositories below it. Team Explorer will also show TFVC and Git repositories in the same the same Team Project.

It could be useful to see which is the current working changeset at which the source code is updated like in SVN.
For example using a bold font for the changeset line in the History

                    • Enhance the Open Query in Microsoft Excel to allow cross-project queries to be exported.

Now we get error: TF208015: You are trying to add work items that are not in the selected team project for this Microsoft Excel file. Only the work items from the *** team project will be added to your work item list. If you want to add work items from another team project, open a new Microsoft Excel file from that team project.

Are you kidding me? How is it the TF client can display the results of the query, but the export cannot handle them too? Makes it incredibly cumbersome to manage program-level reporting...

In TFS 2012 (Scrum Template) you can set a Task to Blocked. Problem is you need a query to see a task is blocked. I suggest Visualizing it in the Sprint board so that Team member know the item is blocked.

                            • TFS The +Add Backlog item should not default to the current iteration

On the HOME screen in TFS web access, if you click on "+Add Backlog Item" button, the new backlog item defaults to the current active iteration. This is an unfortunate decision as it means that the item (most likely) will automatically appear on the board without being approved by the product owner. We should have the ability to specify a "default iteration" used for creating new items similar to how we have a default area.

For example, if a Product Backlog work item has two children Task work items which each have remaining work, it would be incredibly beneficial to have a field on the Product Backlog work item that was able to roll-up the values of these fields. That is to say that if the remaining work on the two Tasks for that Product Backlog item were 5 and 10 respectively, the Product Backlog work item could show that the sum of…

Work Items currently already have revisions saved and make them visible by looking at the history tab, however this should be a first class feature. Allow users to navigate back and forth in time, compare versions and most importantly, let work item template editors specify which attribute and state machine changes trigger a major (x.) or minor (.y) change. For example changes to the 'Description' field in our environment always causes a major change from e.g. 1.0 (or 1.1, 1.2 etc) to 2.0. Same goes for status state changes from 'In Review' to 'Released'.

The current philosophy seems to be that only active team members can participate in code reviews which are always made for one check-in. Here are a few suggestions on how to make it more usable.
                                    1) Make it web-based so one doesn't need Visual Studio (and sources for entire solution). This way one could easily ask for consultancy from a remote expert
                                    2) Make it possible to create review request afterwards and possibly spanning multiple check-ins. The current practise suggests people to do huge check-ins which is not a best practise.
                                    3) Have the comments to make a discussion tree.…

Thanks for the feedback on the code review features. We’re currently in the planning process for improving TFVC code reviews. We’ll come back and update this when we have a better idea of the release timeframe.

                                    • Create a new view in TFS Task Board to view backlog as a User Story Map

Using the new Features capability in TFS 2013, add a new view in Task Board to view backlog as a User Story Map, allowing teams to visualize their system and helping them to prioritize and plan their releases. My Visual Studio Online account was create in North Central US. I'd like an option to change the region, so that my data is stored closer to my users.

                                        • Implement indexed full-text search of work items, check-in comments and source

TFS stores a tremendous amount of text, but finding what you are looking for with the built-in tools is not very easy. The work item query editor follows the old structured approach - which is good for some things - but is clumsy for full-text, unstructured searches. Check-in comments are even more problematic.
Imagine a search engine that crawls the full TFS content, with simple scoping (project/folder and item type) that instantly finds changesets, work items and source code. The web frontent should have a very familiar "web search engine" style, but it should also be possible to perform these…

Thanks for the feedback. The web access site for TFS 2010 features a search box for work items. The work item search box has been added into the product for the next version of Visual Studio. As BertrandH notes, there’s a third party plug-in that adds a search box for work items to VS 2010. Our official powertools for VS 2010 also recently released with a work item search box added in: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/c255a1e4-04ba-4f68-8f4e-cd473d6b971f.

We continue to look into a comprehensive search solution for all artifacts in TFS besides just work items.
