I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

        • Comment Selection (Ctrl+K,Ctrl+C) with a multiline selection should comment out blank lines

          When I use the Comment Selection command with multiple lines selected in C++ or C#, it adds // comments to lines with text in them but leaves blank lines uncommented.

          Every other editor I use with a similar feature comments out *all* selected lines including blank lines. That is a much better way to do this, because it ties together all the commented lines visually, making it easier to see what lines to select when I later want to uncomment them.

          For example, I often use blank lines within a function to separate short blocks of code. If I select…

            • Show csproj in the solution explorer

              In VS2017, project.json was replaced by csproj again, but the file is not available on the solution explorer. Instead, it shows only on right click > edit ***.csproj.

              This is an unecessary step and a major drawback on the simplicity it had with project.json.

              Please just show every file on the solution explorer, mainly the csproj ones.

              • Recognize the homebrew installed version of mono and/or netCore, rather that downloading/installing a duplicate copy during installation

                The installation for VS for Mac does not appear to recognize the homebrew-installed mono and/or netCore runtimes during installation and proceeds to download a new version that may clash with the already installed version.

                For example, brew installs mono here:
                /usr/local/Cellar/mono

                And the official installer installs here:
                /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/Current

                The installer has overridden my PATH with the non-brew managed version....

                This is VERY annoying, especially because Rider (the new JetBrains IDE for .NET) already recognizes brew...

                  • Add a "Go To File Member"

                    The visual studio 2017 Go To feature is working well. The only thing that is missing for me is a "go to file member" feature.
                    Same thing as the Go To member but for the current document only (implemented in Resharper).
                    This kind of feature eases the keyboard navigation a lot. Using the current top dropdown is not keyboard friendly.

                    Having this feature will make me switch from Reshaper navigation to Visual Studio 2017 navigation.

                      when we type an open quotation mark, VS will report other lines error checking. whether could disable this feature during our developing.

                      • document well open files scrolled with mouse

                        In visual studio 2015 when you have a number files opened that exceeds the size of the document well arrows are shown at the top and bottom of the document well. You use these arrows to scroll through your opened files. I would like to be able to scroll the open documents in the document well using the mouse. In my case this would mean using my touch pad and doing a two finger scroll up or down.

                        • Visual Studio Perforemence

                          Visual Studio 2015's performance is horrendous. Working on large projects is extremely difficult due to VS poor ability to use resources effectively. I have 32GB of RAM and 12 core CPU, yet when I work on one of my large projects, visual studio becomes very sluggish, often freezes up and when I look at the my resources I still have ~24GB of free RAM and plenty of CPU power.
                          I highly suggest that you invest more efforts in making VS2017 perform better than its predecessor. I love VS and I still think it is one of the best IDEs but…

                              • Keep wildcard include when adding matching file to project

                                Keep wildcard include when adding matching file to project

                                Being able to include files in a project via a wildcard is a nice feature but VS removes the wildcard and replaces it with individual inclusions for each matching file whenever I add or remove a file that matches the wildcard.

                                For example, this:
                                <ItemGroup>
                                <None Include="Features\*.feature" />
                                </ItemGroup>

                                Becomes this:
                                <ItemGroup>
                                <None Include="Features\Authentication.feature" />
                                <None Include="Features\SpecFlowFeature1.feature" />
                                <None Include="Features\SystemSmokeTest.feature" />
                                </ItemGroup>

                                This is carried over from a previous suggestion that was closed:

                                • Add a Close Solution button on "File Modification Detected" dialog

                                  When I merge a branch or any operation in git that changes files, the "File Modification Detected" modal/dialog pops up and gives me an option that either takes a long time or puts my files in an inconsistent state. It would be extremely convenient to have a "Close Solution" button so I can ensure VS and extensions don't have any file locks.

                                  See image from this tweet.

                                  Alternatively, Close Solution/Project should replace Ignore and Ignore All. But I only say that because I can't think of a reason I would want to put my editor in an inconsistent state…

                                  • Build Output - Intermediate path configuration should be as flexible in C# as in C++

                                    Allow users to redirect where code generated files are stored the way Visual C++ does.
                                    e.g. Be able to use something like $(VCOutDir)\$(SolutionName)\$(ProjectName)\$(Configuration) to redirect generated binaries to some folder other than where source code is kept.

                                    • Bring the ctrl+d shortcut from Visual Studio Code

                                      In visual studio code ther is a feature to Add Selection To Next Find Match. crtl+d is the default shortcut in Visual Studio Code, Atom, Sublime and other good editors.
                                      (editor.action.addSelectionToNextFindMatch)

                                      • Installer: Clicking on the Workload buckets should not automatically select/deselect the items

                                        Clicking on the workload buckets in the installer should not automatically (de)select the workload and the associated individual components. The current behavior makes it difficult to preview which individual components are bundled in the workload. Explicitly selecting/deselecting the checkbox for the workload should be required for adding/removing.

                                        • Basic support for git sub modules

                                          If I add a submodule to my git repo, VS does not download it first time (init) or update it on pulls. Because of this when other people open my project the builds will fail. tfs online supports downloading of sub modules when it pulls the code from git so visual studio should also support this.
