I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

  1. Add 'filename' column to Bookmarks window

    Currently the Bookmarks window shows the full 'File Location' of the bookmarked location. This takes up a large amount of horizontal screen real estate, and requires parsing the text each time I look for a bookmark.

    Consider adding a 'File Name' column option, and enabling/disabling various other column options.

    • Add drag scrolling (pan) to Class Designer

      Navigation in the class diagram should be like the pan-and-zoom for the XAML design window or the Debug Canvas extension. Right now we can use the scroll bars or (shift+) mousewheel to scroll the view, both of which are extremely tedious and painful.

      Other parts of the UI in the IDE could probably benefit from drag scrolling as well (like code - to quickly peek at the end of line that is off the edge of the screen). One possibility might be to map Ctrl+right click to drag scrolling throughout the IDE

      • Support for Terminal in Visual Studio

        I would love to see an inbuilt terminal/shell in Visual Studio so I don't get to go outside VS when working on projects that are strictly terminal dependent like Angular etc.
        Try replicating what JetBrains IDEs/VS Code already do, would help developers a lot as they don't have to switch between VS and terminals/shells.
        Thanks in advance, anticipating this feature in the final build.

        • Add filter for get/set to find all references

          When you find all references often you are looking for who sets a variable/field. It would be nice if there was a toggle to show just setters, just getters and both.

          • Improve the screenshot mechanism of Visual Studio's "Help/Send Feedback/Report a Problem" dialogue

            I find that the most frequent case of problem to be reported by the dialogue is not sufficiently complicated to require a recording of some sequence of steps, but yet is sufficiently complicated to require the first or both of the following, currently unavailable features:

            1) Take a single screenshot on command, so that the user may arrange the screen to provide maximal information on-topic and minimal irrelevant information before shooting.

            Currently: The screenshot is taken on click on the "Report a Problem..." menu entry. Issues:

            • Add Back and Forward buttons to Find Symbol Results

              When investigating or refactoring code it's often necessary to look not just at references to a single thing, but references to related things (e.g. a field and also the property that returns that field). VS should add one or both of the following features:

              1. Browser-like Back and Forward buttons in Find Symbol Results
              2. An alternate shortcut key for "Find all references" that would not clear the existing list, but add new references to the bottom instead.

                      • Show csproj in the solution explorer

                        In VS2017, project.json was replaced by csproj again, but the file is not available on the solution explorer. Instead, it shows only on right click > edit ***.csproj.

                        This is an unecessary step and a major drawback on the simplicity it had with project.json.

                        Please just show every file on the solution explorer, mainly the csproj ones.

                            • Recognize the homebrew installed version of mono and/or netCore, rather that downloading/installing a duplicate copy during installation

                              The installation for VS for Mac does not appear to recognize the homebrew-installed mono and/or netCore runtimes during installation and proceeds to download a new version that may clash with the already installed version.

                              For example, brew installs mono here:
                              /usr/local/Cellar/mono

                              And the official installer installs here:
                              /Library/Frameworks/Mono.framework/Versions/Current

                              The installer has overridden my PATH with the non-brew managed version....

                              This is VERY annoying, especially because Rider (the new JetBrains IDE for .NET) already recognizes brew...

                                • Add a "Go To File Member"

                                  The visual studio 2017 Go To feature is working well. The only thing that is missing for me is a "go to file member" feature.
                                  Same thing as the Go To member but for the current document only (implemented in Resharper).
                                  This kind of feature eases the keyboard navigation a lot. Using the current top dropdown is not keyboard friendly.

                                  Having this feature will make me switch from Reshaper navigation to Visual Studio 2017 navigation.

                                  • Visual Studio Perforemence

                                    Visual Studio 2015's performance is horrendous. Working on large projects is extremely difficult due to VS poor ability to use resources effectively. I have 32GB of RAM and 12 core CPU, yet when I work on one of my large projects, visual studio becomes very sluggish, often freezes up and when I look at the my resources I still have ~24GB of free RAM and plenty of CPU power.
                                    I highly suggest that you invest more efforts in making VS2017 perform better than its predecessor. I love VS and I still think it is one of the best IDEs but…

                                    • Streamline the update process

                                      To add to the other suggestions about updates, my major annoyance with them is that things tend to go like this:

                                      - start Visual Studio
                                      - see the update icon
                                      - click (#1)
                                      - this opens a sidebar rather than anything more useful (no space to display what's in the update in any detail, for example)
                                      - click (#2)
                                      - now I have the "Extensions and updates" window open with an actual "Update" button visible
                                      - click (#3)
                                      - this then launches VS Installer, which 9 times out of 10 seems to ask me to click a button so it…

                                      • Do not make Azure Function the default new item

                                        Previously when adding a new item to a solution it would pick a Class as the default item (top most), but since Azure Functions were added the Azure Function is the default.

                                        I'd prefer a more logical and neutral default (class) even though it is not top of the list.

                                        • Keep wildcard include when adding matching file to project

                                          Keep wildcard include when adding matching file to project

                                          Being able to include files in a project via a wildcard is a nice feature but VS removes the wildcard and replaces it with individual inclusions for each matching file whenever I add or remove a file that matches the wildcard.

                                          For example, this:
                                          <ItemGroup>
                                          <None Include="Features\*.feature" />
                                          </ItemGroup>

                                          Becomes this:
                                          <ItemGroup>
                                          <None Include="Features\Authentication.feature" />
                                          <None Include="Features\SpecFlowFeature1.feature" />
                                          <None Include="Features\SystemSmokeTest.feature" />
                                          </ItemGroup>

                                          This is carried over from a previous suggestion that was closed:
