I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Make Solution Explorer remember its new view

    In VS2012 it is possible to create New Solution Explorer View which allows developer to have a separate solution explorer view showing only one project or only one folder. This is great when you open several separate sub-windows in IDE and arrange different files to different sub-windows and also you can dock your new solution explorer views to your sub-windows. The problem is that your new solution explorer view is not remembered when you close IDE. On the next startup you'll get your sub-windows but not your solution explorer views.

    • Automatic theme changer (Colour scheme)

      Allow automatic change of theme based on time of day (And possibly season responsive)
      So you don't strain your eyes or have to keep going and changing the theme every day/night

      • add option to not trigger Quick Info by mouse hover over symbol

        Many times Quick Info is unintentionally triggered when the mouse pointer is over a random symbol. This is distracting, and I would like to turn this automatic behaviour off.

        Many automatic intellisense options can be disabled so that they must be explicitly invoked to show them. For Quick Info this is Ctrl K + I.

        • Show cause of circular dependency in error message

          It is frustrating that when you get the error message in visual studio can not add reference because this would cause a circular dependency the error message can not just list what the assembly that is causing the issue is. It isn't super hard to figure out but it adds extra time to the work to solve the problem if just a few minutes. I don't understand why the error message can't just contain this information.

          • Enable Navigate To feature (CTRL-Comma) with wildcards

            For example, when a user opens the Navigate To feature, he/she should be able to search for a file named "StartReservationPage.html" by typing "*Reservation*.html" in order to quickly find and access that file within the solution.

            • Hide Files/Folders in Solution Explorer

              Please allow for exclusion of files and folders in the Solution Explorer. This is not exclusion from a project - I am using a website in my screenshot - but from the Solution Explorer view itself.

              Having directories such as bower_components and node_modules present in the IDE doesn't serve a purpose but appears to take a toll on time when searching for files, opening the solution, etc.

              • Visual Studio Typescript extension should support all versions of TypeScript

                I am using Microsoft.Typescript.MSBuild v1.8.11 nuget package to build my TypeScript so that I am in control of the version. The latest Visual Studio Typescript extension only support version 1.8.6 of TypeScript. I need version 1.8.11 to build rxjs 5.0.0-beta.7 without erros.

                The build works fine but the problem is that I get hundreds of IntelliSense errors. We have a large team so various workarounds of only showing builds errors are not particularly helpful.

                See https://github.com/Microsoft/TypeScript/issues/8518 for details of the issue.

                I think:
                1) There should be a Visual Studio extension for every released version of Typescript including minor releases…

                • Option to generate XML documentation on a single line by default

                  Under Tools->Options->Text Editor->C#->Advanced we have the option "Generate XML documentation comments for ///". When you do this, you get

                  /// <summary>
                  /// |
                  /// </summary>

                  (where '|' represents where the cursor is).

                  More often than not, I want this all on a single line, so I have to press

                  (shift+ home, home), backspace, backspace, delete

                  and then I'm left with what I want:

                  /// <summary>|</summary>

                  It would be nice is VS offered the option to generate my XML comments on a single line by default. This could be either right next to the "Generate XML documentation comments for ///" check…

                  • Add Git Submodules support to CodeLens

                    Right now CodeLens supports git, but doesn't support git submodules.
                    It displays "-references | 0 changes | 0 authors, 0 changes"

                    • Provide a way to turn off incremental search in Quick Find

                      Please provide a way to turn off incremental search in Quick Find. It's often annoying when Quick Find moves the caret and loses my context/place when I'm typing a term that ends up not being found in the file. For example, if I want to find SystemParameters in a C# file, then Quick Find will always move the caret up to the using System; directive at the top, but it won't move the caret back where it originally was once it determines that SystemP isn't in the document.

                      • Allow Traits to be applied to Ordered Tests in Visual Studio

                        I am using Visual Studio 2015. All the tests can have test traits applied to it (TestCategory, TestProperty etc.). So these tests can be grouped under a category under Test Explorer.
                        This is not possible if the test is an "Ordered Test". As I hear from one of your employees ( https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/512f1cab-d3cf-4ea7-9c35-18fc23d9585b/how-to-apply-traits-for-ordered-tests-in-visual-studio?forum=vsunittest#512f1cab-d3cf-4ea7-9c35-18fc23d9585b) , it was possible to apply a test category to Ordered Test in older version i.e: VS2010 and VS2012 via Test View Window which is no longer available in later versions of VS. Pls consider this feature to be added to future releases of Visual Studio.

                        Regards, …

                          • Registry: Find result format -> make it more customizable in Settings

                            You can modify result's format in regedit in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\{version}\Find\Find result format
                            with some $vars.
                            I would love to have this in Visual Studio settings and also added new $var for "file's project relative path" so $p is absolute path on the disk and let's say $r would be relative path from solution's root folder.
                            So instead of C:/User/James/Documents/Visual Studio 14/Projects/Project_x/Program.cs would be ./Project_x/Program.cs

                            • add razor cshtml preview, like aspx preview

                              aspx pages can be splitted so you get a preview of the rendering

                              Why not cshtml pages ?

                              The aspx preview is buggy, but it does not matter. The preview is a good way to see if something is wrong with code integration.

                              • Enable customization of emails for Release Management

                                Microsoft Release Management does not support customization of the standard server emails.

                                It would be beneficial if we could add fields such as Build Number and Drop location to the email notifications for TFS Linked builds.

                                This allows developers to see which build was deployed (build number), and if they need quick access to the binaries they can click link in the RM mail to see the files on the file server (and avoid logging into production servers).

                                • Enable Visual Studio Comments to Link to TFS IDs

                                  I just want to be able write the following comment in the code editor

                                  //TFS:<ID> My custom comment

                                  Then visual studio would format the <ID> as a link to the Visual Studio Online and on hover, show me a preview of the item.

                                  So, when I find bad code which I just cannot fix right now, I could add an item to TFS and in code, I could make a linked comment like so:

                                  //TFS: 1838 We should really find a better way of doing this
                                  public void ConsumeAllCpu(){
                                  ConsumeAllCpu();
                                  }

                                  • Visual Studio Code for Windows RT

                                    Develop a Visual Studio Code version to Windows RT.
                                    Just the resources to create a Windows App, a Windows Phone App, HTML and JavaScript edition are enough.

                                    I know that Windows Phone development requires an emulator and it's hard to create... but remove the emulator. I can deploy the source to my mobile and test it.

                                    The same situation to Windows Apps: we won't create a App with risks to the RT environment.

                                    HTML and JavaScript can be written on notepad, but Visual Studio is the best.

                                    • Show a banner message across the top of the Changes tab if the user has both Staged and Unstaged changes

                                      If I have both Staged and Unstaged changes, I would love to see a banner across the Changes pane (like the Sync notification attached) that reminds me I have Unstaged changes. I keep getting bitten during Merges where the merge files are automatically Staged, but then any extra integration fixes I do to additional files to get it to build/work are then thrown into Changes (Unstaged) and are not committed once I think I'm done and commit.

                                      A banner would remind me that I have files I might want to stage and include in the commit.

                                      • Embed console applications on VS IDE

                                        When debugging a console app, VS opens a console window. This breaks the workflow as the console always pops in the most inconvenient place and switching windows back and forth can become really annoying.

                                        Other IDEs (e.g. Eclipse) include a built in console window embedded in the IDE itself (it prints STDOUT, STDERR and reads STDIN). This is really helpful as you can see the output of the program and the debugger+code+breakpoints+data at the same time and on the same window.

                                        It would be nice to have a built-in console on VS for console applications. Especially if it is searchable…

                                        • Allow a user to instantly navigate to the TFS folder for the selected workspace in Source Control Explorer

                                          Solution Explorer has the option, Open Folder in File Explorer, which makes it extremely easy to quickly access the folders for the solution in windows explorer. It would be very nice to have a similar feature in Source Control Explorer that quickly expands the folders to navigate you to the path set for the Source Control Folder for the Workspace.

                                          You can include a property right below Local Path and call it, Server Path: <path> (where <path> is a hyper link similar to Local Path). And if there are multiple paths mapped for the Workspace, have the little down arrow…
