Visual Studio 2015

Welcome to the Visual Studio 2015 UserVoice site. This site is for suggestions and ideas for the IDE of Visual Studio (Community, Professional or Enterprise). You can also add suggestions for Team Services or Visual Studio Code. Or go to Connect to file a bug. Note that Application Insights has moved to its own UserVoice forum.

We also added an Announcements section where we will be posting special opportunities for you to participate in.

Read about current UserVoice statuses and their definitions in our article “What Does the Status of My Feedback Mean?” article.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Please stop throwing "Cannot find the requested resource" exceptions

    I develop Visual Studio extensions with Break on all Exceptions set.

    Every time I do anything in Visual Studio (launch VS, open the Options dialog, use Solution Explorer), I got lots of first-chance ArgumentExceptions, "Cannot find the requested resource", from
    Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.dll!Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.ResourceLoader.TryEachApplicableNamespace<string>(string resourceName, Microsoft.VisualStudio.CommonIDE.ResourceLoader.GetResourceDelegate<string> getResource) .

    This severely interferes with my debugging workflow.

    Please please stop throwing this exception.

    • Reduce left-margin in Visual Studio 2015

      Please allow turning off or shrinking the size of the new margin at the left of the code editor. It's huge! I much prefer having code next to the line numbers, rather than a large and almost always empty margin that sometimes shows a light bulb.

      • Property own formatting

        Currently property new line formatting controlled by "Place open brace on new line for methods".
        I'd like to control property new line formatting by property own rules.
        Currently My Property looks like
        public int IntProperty { get; set; }
        or
        public int intProperty
        { get; set; }
        I'd like to see two rules:
        "Place open brace on new line for property"
        If checked
        public int IntProperty
        {
        get; set;
        }
        otherwise
        public int IntProperty {
        get; set;
        }

        And "Keep getter and setter on same line"
        If checked
        public int IntProperty {
        get; set;
        }
        otherwise
        public int IntProperty { …

        • Support custom elements in .aspx files

          Update 4 RC just recently included support for custom elements in the HTML editor (the default editor for .html files) however this feature did not make it into the HTML (Web Forms) editor (the default editor for .aspx files).

          • Have resources ResXFileCodeGenerator generate partial class.

            The ResXFileCodeGenerator tool for Resource files generates classes that are difficult to extend / augment as needed. Please give the code generator emit classes as partial to allow customisation / extension.

            • mouse cursor changes direction

              The mouse cursor changes to an odd arrow when hovering over the expand/collapse signs in the code editor.

              It's odd because instead of pointing towards the top left, it points towards the top right.

              This isn't expected behavior and isn't how the cursor works anywhere else within VS2012. On ALL OTHER expansion items it is the normal cursor that points towards the top left. On this ONE SPOT it is backwards.

              • Bring back the Code Definition Window in Visual Studio Express

                The Code Definition Window is no longer available in the Express version of Visual Studio 2012; bad idea - if anything, Microsoft should be adding features to the free version of their IDE, not removing them.

                This is not the kind of feature that can be thought of as 'professional only' or 'enterprise only'; it's a basic development aid, and it's available in other free IDEs (since before it appeared in VS, actually).

                If Microsoft wants to maintain their relevance in the IDE space, and win developers over to the new Store and mobile platforms, crippling the free version is…

                  • Prevent the auto formatter from putting the base class call onto a new line.

                    Prevent the auto formatter from putting the base class call onto a new line.

                    Today (looks terrible):

                    public MyClass()
                    : base()

                    Should look:

                    public MyClass() : base()

                    • Open many solution in one IDE

                      One solution per window - horrible!
                      Or do this optional in settings.
                      Normal like in Netbeans.

                      • Enable Roslyn-Powered Data ASTs and Data Views

                        This vote is for developers who support the idea of Roslyn-Powered Data ASTs and Data Views. Data Views are a conceptual improvement to the way Visual Studio presents data files to a developer, and how a developer works with that data. Data Views are powered by Data ASTs, which are ASTs (abstract syntax trees) that describe data in much the same way that code-based ASTs describe code.

                        Data ASTs and the Data Views that they enable allow teams to pick a data format to use in their project, while enabling individual developers within the team to view the data in…

                        • Generate RESX files in alphabetical order

                          When saving RESX files from the Resource Editor, generate the XML in alphabetical order, sorted by the resource Name. This reduces the chances of version-control conflicts if multiple developers are adding to/editing the same resource file.

                          • Add more options for Syntax Coloring

                            It would be helpful to have italics and underline as an option. (and perhaps strikethrough)
                            I'd also like to be able to distinguish static items from non-static ones or globals from locals, etc.
                            Resharper adds some options already, but you can only use color and boldness.
                            Being able to underline static items but use he same color might be more clear than a bunch of different colors all over the place.

                            • Add order attribute to codedui tests

                              I run coded ui test from Microsoft Test Manager. In MTM i can order the test to run in a specific order. Sometimes when debugging I need to emulate this functionality. Coded UI tests are not sufficient for this. They don't provide the fine grained test reporting that I need.

                              I sugges that you provide a simple order attribute in the coded ui test framework that can be used to decorate the testmethods. e.g. Order = 1. Tests with an order attribute would be run first, in order. Those with the order attribute would be run afterwards. Each order attribute…

                              • Pair programming in visual studio editor (working with more persons in one workspace)

                                When pair programming two programmers want to work on the same file(s) real time. To do this the first user can invite a team member to join the same project from an other computer. All changes the users make are shown on both computers.

                                This will deliver the feature faster when working on trivial parts of the implementation. For less trivial parts they can work behind one monitor. This feature can also be used to do tutoring or code in code reviews from remote.

                                • Don't break hardlink

                                  There is a patch for VS2005 (KB945993): "The hard link of a file is destroyed if you use Visual Studio 2005 to open and to modify either the original file or the hard link".

                                  VS2013 has the same symptoms, but seems no patch.

                                  Could it be fixed for VS2013 and later versions?
                                  Or "saving a file by replacing it" and "exposing it to the end user" is "by design"?

                                  • Command Argument history capability

                                    The property pages Command Argument entry must be changed frequently during program debug and testing. Having a drop down history list of previous commands would make switching between frequently used command arguments much quicker and less error prone.

                                    • Shortcut to duplicate current line/selection

                                      In Netbeans, when we press Ctrl+Shift+downKey, it duplicates the current line or selection just below the cursor. This comes handy, if we are inserting the same statement consecutively (perhaps with little modification... saves us from copy/paste). Please provide the similar shortcut for VS11.

                                      • Make the "Show References" code information indicator less intrusive

                                        The "Show References" code information indicator in VS 2013 Preview is too intrusive:

                                        - it wastes too much vertical space
                                        - it makes vertical navigation (e.g. using cursor keys) strange
                                        - I always have to double check, if the cursor is at the right place, when I want to write something right above a method (e.g. add an attribute)

                                        Suggestion:
                                        - Move the "show references" indicator to the same line where the method is declared.
                                        - Get rid of the word "references", show just the number (maybe in a (colored) circle
                                        - Put the indicator either just left of the…

                                        • Don't auto enable the Git Source Control Plugin

                                          Our development team (and every other team I've been on) hates the Git plugin for visual studio. We find it cumbersome compared to third-party tools or the command line interface. And it is a performance nightmare, especially with large repositories. This wouldn't be an issue if we could just disable the git plugin by setting it to none in the source control options menu. However, Visual Studio will ALWAYS reenable it if it detects a git repository in the directory of the solution.

                                          We've resorted to regedit-ing to disable it.

                                          If someone wants to turn off functionality, they should be…
