I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

    • Find in current namespace

In Find Window (CTRL+F) we can choose from some options (current project, entire solution etc.). Sometimes I miss option "current namespace".

      • The VS 2015 needs a automatic layout mechanism for different working programming languages.

The VS 2015 needs a automatic layout mechanism for different working programming languages.

As more and more working programming languages are added to VS 2015, the problem that the VS 2015 can not automatically "re-layout" the windows for the current working language becomes disturbing when the last working language has too many left windows in the IDE work-space. (RTVS, especially)

        The following is the suggestion:
        1. Different default window layouts for different working languages predefined in the *TVS

        2. VS remembers the last layouts for different working language

        3. When switching working programming language, VS automatically switch the window layouts…

        • Visually Distinguish Reference Types

In the IDE, different reference types should be visually distinguishable from each other. Project references, assembly references, and .NET framework references should be colored differently or have different icons. This would make it easier to separate and identify dependencies.

            • Allow color customization for structure guide lines

I like the structure guide lines. But I'd like to use a more subtle color for the lines. However, "structure guide lines" or anything like it doesn't exist in the Fonts and Colors choices.

              • Bring a command palette to visual studio.

Add a combined fuzzy search and command launcher that works in a similar way to Sublime Text or Visual Studio Code.

I appreciate there is Ctrl+, but it sucks and half the time fails. It does not allow for fuzzy searching and is prone to crashing when used a lot (experienced over 2013 and 2015).

                • move class to separate file

In case I have a single source file with multiple class definitions (say an interface and some contract classes), I'd like to be able to right-click on one of the classes and move it to a separate file.

                    • Add feature like emacs artist-mode to visual studio IDE

                      See:

                      http://cinsk.github.io//emacs/emacs-artist.html

There have been a number of requests to add this kind of feature to Visual Studio, which have been closed:

"Add my custom drawing to code section as part of comment because drawings can often be clearer and meaningful to the reader."

"Ability to draw next to the code simple shapes to explain code"

"add feature to draw monographs in comments to illustrate code idea (save as png in project folder, referenced by a file positions database)"

While I think having the ability to seamlessly include line drawings would be better, an artist-mode feature would be a great…

                      • Make live unit testing configurable

Right now, live unit testing in VS2017 RC will run all all unit tests in the solution. It would be great to restrict it to certain test assemblies (e.g. with file name filter, *.unittest.dll).

Why? Imagine you have a solution with unit tests and integration tests (or even Coded UI tests). In this setup, it's common that you don't want your integration tests run whenever you do a code change.

Or is this already possible? Via test configuration file? I could not find anything.

                        • Allow Live Visual Tree to select content in popup/menus.

The Live Visual Tree for peeking at live XAML authored views is a great feature, however I just can't find a way to highlight or select content in a popup window or menu. I know the complexity of what would be involved, but there could be some kind of shortcut key to enable Live Visual Tree selection while hovering the mouse over a popup window or menu then that would go a long way to improving the feature.

                          • Codelens Doesn't Detect Parameterized nUnit Tests

CodeLens currently does not support detection of parameterized nUnit tests, as described in the pages below:

                            https://github.com/nunit/docs/issues/174
                            https://github.com/nunit/nunit3-vs-adapter/issues/55
                            https://github.com/nunit/nunit-vs-adapter/issues/105

Adding support for CodeLens detection of tests in-line would be very useful.

                              • Synchronically scroll two code editors

I want to have two editors (tabs) open side by side and to have ability to scroll synchronically both source code (the same thing as in Compare situation – Diff).
Why: I often need to look into two code editors at the same time and it would be good to have somehow ability to scroll both source code at the same time. Often that code is pretty different and diff options is not needed but only to scroll at the same time in order to find some similarities or just to use as model for creating new code.

                                  • Move Type to Namespace refactoring

Move Type to File is nice refactoring but it does not let us work fast enough when you want to place new files into business, core etc. projects. Resharper and CodeRush have this refactoring, and it would be awesome to have this refactoring in VS2017 out of the box, as it is one of the most used refactoring in Resharper.

                                    • Add support for project reference constraints

When working in large teams there is to easy for a single developer to add a reference from one project to another.

The developer could have done this without knowing the planned architecture of the application.

It would be nice if Visual Studio had the ability to setup reference constraints for a project.

If a member tries to add a reference to a invalid project they will get notified about that.

                                      • Move the Live Unit Test carrets/icons to the left bar

Rigth now the indicators for code coverage will add an extra column to the editor to make space for the carrets/icons. It would be better to place these in either the left most column (used by breakpoints) or the space used by e.g. ReSharper. See attached image for an example.

                                        • Keyboard shortcut for Increase / Decrease Line Indent code block

Keyboard shortcut needed for increasing or decreasing line indent for a code block or line

Currently you have to highlight text > click Edit > Advanced > Click Decrease Line Indent. It's slow for power users.
