I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Allow XML documentation to be embedded into assemblies

    At the moment, XML documentation is generated alongside an assembly as a separate .xml file. When distributing, care must be taken to keep both files together.

    It would be nice if we could somehow embed the XML file directly into the assembly as a resource, ensuring that the documentation and assembly can never be separated.

    This would increase the size of the assembly, but a) in many situations ease of distribution is a greater concern than size, and b) we can always distribute a second version of our assembly with the documentation removed (i.e. include docs in 'debug' builds but…

    • Copy only error message(description) from the Error List window

      In the Error List window of VS when clicking on any error line the "Copy" from context menu, the VS pastes in the clipboard the line with format:
      "Category Default Order Description File and etc". But many time only Description is needed.

      Would be useful to add extra copy menu items that copies only specific column from the line.

      Or
      To add "Copy Columns" menu item that lists all columns it the same way as "Show Columns", where an user can check what columns to copy in the clipboard

      • Indicate when an invisible character (such as "zero-width space" / U+200B) is present in a string literal

        In the Visual Studio code editor, please indicate (somehow) when an invisible character such as "Zero-width space" (unicode U+200B) is present in a string literal.

        Such characters can lead to hard-to-diagnose bugs such as HttpWebRequest.CreateHttp(string url) throwing an UriFormatException when passed an innocuous-looking string literal such as "http://www.microsoft.com" (where the first character in the literal is not "h", as it appears, but rather the zero-width space character).

        • C# Property Manager same as C++

          Allow multiple projects sharing properties.
          Having a large collection of projects and managing their properties individually is time consuming and cumbersome.

          C++ solution defined here: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/669zx6zc.aspx

          • Enable filtering out warnings without a Code in the error list, ex. "Referenced component could not be found".

            When working with a large solution it is not uncommon to have many projects unloaded to decrease build times during development. However, this leads to many warnings displayed in the Error List saying "The referenced component 'XXXX' could not be found", which makes it difficult to find the warnings and CA-warnings that we are actually of interest to me.

            There seems to be no way to filter out these warnings today, so I suggest you implement that.

            • Visual Studio should support leading commas when formatting code

              Currently, Visual Studio doesn't support the leading comma notation, like this:

              o = new O( 1
              , "a"
              , 1235
              );

              or like this:

              o = new O()
              { a = 1
              , b = "a"
              , c = 1235
              }

              Please support this very user friendly kind of notation.

                  • Intellisense for Tuples

                    When defining Tuples, you can give types to parameters but cannot give any names to them. For example:

                    public List<Tuple<
                    string /*Description*/,
                    double /*Amount*/>> Distributions { get; set; }

                    When using this public property you can tell that it is a list of tuples of string+number but what are those? It would be nice if Intellisense could somehow give you a hint that the string type is "Description" and the int is "Amount".

                    • Direct support for PowerShell in pre/post build events

                      Currently only cmd/batch files are supported. PowerShell is a great replacement available on every Windows box basically. Writing complex pre/post build scripts is way easier in PowerShell.

                      • Instead of asking me to install missing Windows SDK version, also offer me upgrade project to an installed SDK

                        If I open a UWP project that references 10240 SDK, but I don't have that installed, i'm presented with two options: Install the SDK, or skip/don't load project.
                        I'd propose you add a 3rd option: Since this generally happens because you don't install older SDKs any longer but only newer, making projects essentially out of date, offer me the option to pick a new (greater) SDK Version among the ones I have installed. Currently you manually have to know to go into the project file to hand-edit this.

                          • Use fuzzy search for autocomplete suggestions

                            By 'fuzzy', I mean a search that matches whenever every character of the search string is present in order. Sublime Text does this, and it's amazingly effective at letting you pare down a long list of suggestions to the one you want with a minimum of keystrokes and thought, particularly in situations when there are many items that share a common long prefix. This would be particularly useful in the Navigate To search and the code editor autocompleter, but I would encourage using it in every search suggester/autocompleter in VS.

                            For example, searching for 'alpdoone':

                            (...100 similar options...)
                            AnnoyinglyLongLibraryPrefixDoThingOne() //…

                              At this moment, node, npm and bower ship as part of VS. However, many developers will already have installations (and configurations!) of node, npm, bower.. There is no setting in Visual Studio to use an external npm, bower, ...

                              Please enable this option such that I can reuse my configurations and that the built-in node in visual studio does not force me to stay behind on versions.

                              • Add options for CodeLens indicator text

                                CodeLens indicator text is displayed between lines which takes up more vertical space and disturbs the visual overview of (collapsed) code that we are used to.

                                - Allow the selection of a location for indicator text (above, left, right)
                                - Allow to enable/disable CodeLens for references
                                - Allow to choose to only show references indicator text when there are 0 references
                                - Add (keyboard) commands for toggling CodeLens options

                                • Implement Hardware Description Languages

                                  VHDL (as well as Verilog) are Hardware Description Languages which are now commonly used, but there are only a few valuable IDE's supporting it (Altera Quartus for example). But most of them offer only very basic tools (eg.: no re-factoring). Allowing Visual Studio to handle those language, and offer some of those missing features, would open a new world for a new kind of customers. Even if Visual Studio does not feature a complete hardware compiler in first stage, it would be great to use VS as an "external editor".

                                  Remark:
                                  There is already an extension for Visual Studio providing…

                                    By enabling work-wrap in the diff view of VS 2013, I will be able to see the complete line when doing a merge. I have to put 2 separate diffs on the screen and compare them to insure that the merge was done correctly.

                                    • Add "Current Folder" to search options

                                      When you perform a "Find", there are options to search within "Current Document" and "Current Project".

                                      In the case of the project I work with, this can increase the search scope from 1 file to hundreds of files. Normally what I end up doing is opening every file in the folder then doing a "search in all open documents" but this is quite tedious.

                                      Can you add a "Current Folder" option?

                                      • Add Webservice Reference for SWAGGER.IO

                                        Please add the capability to auto-generate a Proxy for Webservice, the same way as it is possible for WSDL.
                                        Project > References > Add Service Reference ... and this should also discover SWAGGER and not only WSDL.

                                        • Add support for the Code Definition window to Visual Studio 2015

                                          The Code Definition Window was a great, non-intrusive way to see how a particular class or method was implemented without taking you away from the code you're working on. Peek Definition is great, but it requires active input, it works best with short snippets of code, and it disrupts your view of the code by appearing in the middle of the editor window. The decision to omit Code Definition Window support from VS2015/Roslyn denies users a valuable tool. Telemetry indicating low usage is most likely due to a lack of awareness - I use it all the time, and the…
