Visual Studio 2015

Welcome to the Visual Studio 2015 UserVoice site. This site is for suggestions and ideas for the IDE of Visual Studio (Community, Professional or Enterprise). You can also add suggestions for Team Services or Visual Studio Code. Or go to Connect to file a bug. Note that Application Insights has moved to its own UserVoice forum.

We also added an Announcements section where we will be posting special opportunities for you to participate in.

Read about current UserVoice statuses and their definitions in our article “What Does the Status of My Feedback Mean?” article.

We look forward to hearing from you!

I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. add option to NuGet to reinstall package

    Sometimes references for a project gets messed up and the package that's installed (listed in packages.config) isn't matching what assemblies are referenced. It would be a good time saver to have an option/action on the nuget screen to be able to re-install a single package (ignoring any dependencies, etc). It can be done today with the uninstall, but then you have to search the whole NuGet directory and remember which version. When you have 10+ that becomes cumbersome.

    • One click update of COM wrappers in .NET languages.

      .NET is treating native ActiveX components like legacy but that is how I communicate with my DirectX 11 graphics engine written in C++.

      When using the engine from Visual Basic 6, you get a notification when an update is available and just click to use the new version.

      In Visual Basic .NET however, you can't make any changes to the interface while developing a new version because the wrapper is locked and the easiest way to delete the old version of the wrapper is to delete the whole project and pick modules one by one into a new project since…

      • Incorporates "comprehension expressions" like python in C#

        Comprehension expressions are powerful when you work with lists. They are very simple to use and with less code it's able to solve many difficult problems.

        So, here is some examples of comprehension expressions:

        var L = new {1, 2, 3, 4, 5};
        for(var i = 0; i < L.length; i++)
        ... L[i] += 10
        ...
        Result:
        [11, 12, 13, 14, 15]

        Now with comprehension expression:

        var L = new {1, 2, 3, 4, 5};
        L = {n + 10 for n in L}

        Result:
        [21, 22, 23, 24, 25]

        Another sample using filter:

        var M = new [,]
        { …

        • method overloading through 'where clause' condition

          The idea is to overload a method by means of the where clause. Where clause should permit runtime value checking.
          Overload with where clause has precedence if condition is met.

          public int Factorial( int n ) where n < 12 {...}
          public BigInteger Factorial( int n ) {...} /*where n > 12*/

          • Enable design-time bindings to work with Compiled Bindings

            Compiled bindings are great, but they aren't compatible (so it seems) with the Blend design-time syntax ({d:DataContext...).

            This makes it impossible to combine the performance benefits with compiled bindings with the ease of having design-time data. You have to either choose the older binding syntax or no design-time data.

            • change the way to update/install

              I had to turn off cryptoprevent to use the install tool in Visual Studio Blend. Usually I can install and update programs without needing to do that, so it must be something specific in this program.

                      • Have a "commit changes" option when fiddling with the LiveVisualTree in a debugging application.

                        The title more or less describes what i'm after; a way of just saying "commit the changes i made in the Live Visual Tree once i stop debugging, please".
                        It would be even cooler if it threw up a short list of the changes you made too as a reminder.

                          • A way to customize product versions on MSDN

                            When I search for the documentation for a certain topic(Eg, string class), it shows up with the latest version of .Net Framework/Visual Studio/SQL server. But, I may use a different version of these products and I wonder if it is possible to set my preferences in MSDN, so i don't have to change every time i lookup for something on MSDN.

                                I always use bookmark in my editor. But sometimes, I need to set some of remark on that place, for to know later on. This is because I want to know in future, why I have put a bookmark at that place.

                                This would be more beneficial for the bookmark functionility.

                                  • Improve the "shared code" feature in Visual Studio solutions

                                    I love the multiplatform support in VS2015, which allows to create an OpenGL ES2 cross-platform code with a special "shared code" project for the common code.

                                    However, if you want to build multiple apps, you either have to create many solution files, or to multiply the projects exponentially as you need new projects for each app on each platform.

                                    In order to easily support multiple apps within the same solution file, we could add the code for multiple apps in the shared code project (with appropriate filters), but we would need a way to disable some shared code so that…

                                    • VS 2015 - SQL Server Object Explorer - Connect should respect the "connect to database" and not fail for users with a bad default database

                                      When a user has a bad default database, a typical work around is to provide the "connect to database" option in the connection GUI. This works in SQL Server Management Studio, but doesn't work in Visual Studio 2015's SQL Server Object Explorer. I suspect that VS is connecting to the default database and ignoring the provided setting or it is ignoring the setting at connection and then switching databases after the connection. This does not work for users with a bad default database.

                                      • provide a way to report bugs in visual studio without opening a paid support ticket.

                                        I have what looks like a legitimate reproducable bug in visual studio that I want to report, but there is no obvious way to do this. I can open an incident, but I don't want to pay to tell Microsoft that it has a bug. I can open a new idea, but this is not where this should be done. Has the send a frown face replaced bug reporting?

                                        • Remove the need for .kproj and .kproject.user projects

                                          Currently VS requires project files in order to open. In the old MSBUILD oriented world this was necessary. With K however, all you need is a Project.json and you can build outside the IDE or in other editors like Sublime.

                                          Only when you go into VS do the files become required. A better experience would be to allow pointing to the Project.json / or a folder and it just loads up.
