I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Feature Request: Local Fields within Properties

    A simple property in C#:
    int MyProperty
    {
    get
    {
    return _myProperty;
    }
    set
    {
    _myProperty = value;
    }
    }
    private int _myProperty = 42;

    Now, imagine the requirement appears that the code must be documented using the /// conventions.

    /// <summary>MyProperty is wonderful...</summary>
    int MyProperty
    {
    get
    {
    return _myProperty;
    }
    set
    {
    _myProperty = value;
    }
    }
    /// <summary>I don't want to document this but I'll get a diagnostic if I don't.</summary>
    private int _myProperty = 42;

    It's too bad that
    /// <summary>MyProperty is wonderful...</summary>
    int MyProperty
    {
    int _myProperty = 42;
    get
    {
    return _myProperty;

    • OOTB Rust programming langague support

      The new Rust programming language is developed by Mozilla.

      http://www.rust-lang.org/
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_(programming_language)

      It gives a very solid infrastructure to write APIs (perhaps even with ABI style).

      It has some advantages over C APIs, and the compiled code is as low-level as that of C/C++.

      Please provide OOTB support for Rust in Visual Studio.

      Thanks.

      • Support JavaScript debugging for Microsoft edge

        Visual Studio should stop debugging when Microsoft Edge is closed. Additionally Visual Studio should be able to debug JavaScript running in the Microsoft Edge browser.

        • Stop automatically messing with my solution configurations and platforms

          Every single time I add a project to a solution, Visual Studio "helpfully" adds to the solution every configuration it finds in the project.

          Every single time the project has a platform that the solution doesn't, Visual Studio "helpfully" creates the missing solution platform and also, most annoyingly, "Mixed Platforms".

          PLEASE leave them alone. I set them up how I like and I'd like them to stay that way.

          Example use case #2:

          I create a new project (defaults to x86) and add a Util library (AnyCPU). Wham, I'm only 5 seconds into a new project and I already have…

          • Improve project F# model

            Improve F# project model (at least, add directions support). Maybe some extension to the language itself would be pretty good: #require "filename" to indicate that filename must be compiled before current file.

            • Add support for Git over ssh in Team Explorer

              Add support for ssh transport when syncing with Git repositories. libgit2 has ssh support now, so this should be fairly straightforward.

                It would be very beautiful if .Net supports GPGPU programming like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPGPU

                • Basic Refactoring Functionality needed

                  Right now when I want to make a section of code a method or make some simple refactoring, its not in the box. Rename is there, but its local to the page and doesn't go deep enough. The top 5-10 refactoring types should come in the box.

                  Merged from another idea: Improve the refactoring tools like code generation, rename, etc.

                  • Please bring back the "Photoshop" import option in Blend 2015

                    If Photoshop importer is not supported in Blend 2015, it impedes our migration plan to Blend 2015 and we'll have to keep using Blend 2013.

                    We recognize that one of the advantages of WPF is that it can separate design from logic.
                    We place orders of screen designs to companies who specialize in design and we don't put the ability of using Blend as the basis of selection.
                    Designers deliver products in the form of Photoshop or Illustrator. Our current partner delivers with Photoshop format.

                    If we can't import Photoshop file directly, we have to create XAML with referencing the…

                    • bring back Build Explorer in Visual Studio 2015

                      Build Explorer had been removed in Visual Studio 2015 in favour of a browser based solution.
                      Unfortunately not all function of Visual Stduio Build Explorer are available in TFS Web Access.
                      Currently it is really frustrating when you need to look at code coverage in source files and not only at the percentage.
                      the information is stored in TFS and you can still use it with Visual Studio 2010 - 2013 but needing to use two Visual Studio does not allow to switch completely to Visual Studio 2015.

                      • allow extension methods to be defined in instance classes

                        Currently, extension methods can only be defined in a static class. It would be very helpful if an extension method could also be defined in an instance class, so that this was possible:

                        public class Foo
                        {
                        public void DoBar()
                        {
                        new Qux().GetBaz("corge").DoGrault();
                        }

                        private static Baz GetBaz(this IQux qux, string s)
                        {
                        // Get Baz from qux here...
                        }
                        }

                        This simply enables a more fluent syntax for private helper methods. This can improve readability of the code compared to a more procedural-looking use of normal static helper methods.

                        The current workaround is to define a new internal static…

                          • Bring back incremental C# compilation

                            When coding Java in Eclipse, the compiler incrementally compiles the project in the background every time a file is saved. This way, when the user clicks run, the launch is instantaneous, rather than the long build process that comes with C#. This makes it easier to develop and test small changes, which in turn makes it easier to find and fix bugs.

                            The C# compiler originally had this functionality, but it was removed when .NET 2.0 arrived as it could sometimes cause problems. However, given that it been proved possible in an equivalent language by the Eclipse team, coupled with…

                                If you work with DVCS like Git or Mercurial you always switch back and forth between branches. This always cause Visual Studio to reload projects even if they were not changed. Even if project is changed, it should not be that long. And of course it should not ask to reload each project.

                                    • Allow users to install entirely to another hard drive

                                      Allow a user to install *all* of Visual Studio to a drive other than the system drive. I have a very small SSD and find it infuriating that Visual Studio can only install a third to my mechanical drive and must install 4GB to my system drive.

                                        We expect to make significant progress on this front in the upcoming release. There are some components which must be installed to the system drive for various reasons – for example, Windows hotfixes and .NET Framework releases. But we think we will be able to do a better job of honoring the chosen location in the next release.

                                        To give some transparency into the design process, one interesting wrinkle to this problem is third-party components that we install. If you choose to install Visual Studio to (say) D:\VS, where should we install something like Git for Windows or the Android SDK (if you select those components)? Should we install them into a subdirectory of D:\VS, even though other apps may use them? And should we attempt to secure the directory? C:\Program Files is only writeable by admin users, which presents a security boundary to rogue apps. Tough choices…

                                        Thanks,…

                                        It's a big annoyance to not have auto completion there. C# Interactive from Roslyn supports it, and even the Immediate pane of C# and VB also have it

                                        • Improve/Reboot Visual Studio Project System

                                          Visual Studio Projects have been around for over a decade, and their projects are starting to show this fact. There are 3 primary issues with Visual Studio Projects that should be attended to in a (very-near) future release:

                                          1) The .sln format. 2001 called and wants its arcane, VB.NET-esque format back -- and we should gladly oblige, PRONTO!!!
                                          2) MSBuild XML format. The format is very difficult to work with, primarily because there is no tooling support for it. Additionally, the syntax is also arbitrary and suffers from XDom-to-POCO-mapping which is a terrible way to design any system around XML…
