  1. Improve code analysis

    Improve code analysis
    - Detect when first line of if block and else block are identical (same for last line)
    - Detect methods used only one time - Method is a candidate for in-lining
    - Detect constant defined in class used only one time
    - Detect private property with backing variable having get { return backingVariable; } set {backingVariable=value;} - convert to autoproperty
    - Detect public property used only within the same class - make it protected/private
    - Detect public method used only within the same class - make it protected/private
    - Detect class used only by one other class…

    • Support a .NET 4.0 Service Pack on Windows XP Supporting those .NET 4.0 Bugs Fixed in .NET 4.5

This idea is in contrast to http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/2723735-make-net-4-5-work-on-any-os-that-supports-4-0 and http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/3116039-support-xp-for-4-5-until-the-end-of-xp-support-, which I do not support. It is parallel to http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio/suggestions/3095632-make-vs2012-not-hide-net-4-0-bugs-when-targeting-, but I think is the converse of it.

Consider a developer who must support customers running Windows XP, and who also is unable or unwilling to debug their applications on a machine separate from their main development machine. Such a developer may feel that he cannot upgrade to Visual Studio 2012, since that installation would replace the .NET 4.0 assemblies on the developer machine, making it impossible for the developer to encounter the fixed .NET 4.0 bugs.

      Unfortunately, it…

      • Create a UTF8 C-runtime

In the past few years I've worked on cross platform apps, mostly between Windows and linux. The biggest stumbling block are path and file names. In our latest project, it got so clunky, that we decided to drop all the UNICODE code compile the Windows side in MBCS. One thing that would help would be to have a C-runtime which works with UTF8 (also having one that drops the underscores would be another huge help.)

        • option to disable quick action squiggles

In VS2015 you introduced the quick action light bulb. I think its a cool piece of tech, and I get why many people like it. However its a bit to intrusive for me, the light bulb was ok, but the green quick action squiggle errors are starting to become a bit annoying.

For example, when I create classes I prefer writing up the class first in the header file, writing the functions, variables etc I know I will be needing. The second I finish writing the constructor prototype the squiggles and the light bulb flare up, "Function definition not found,…

            • Support the VB6 programming IDE on Windows 10

Microsoft support the VB6 programming language on Windows 10.
              https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/ms788708

This means that VB6 is supported until 2025. But Microsoft exclude the VB6 IDE from this support.

The VB6 IDE does install and run on Windows 10, so there is no reason it should not be supported.

Instructions for installing the VB6 programming IDE are here:
              http://nuke.vbcorner.net/Articles/VB60/VisualStudio6Installer/tabid/93/language/en-US/Default.aspx
              http://www.fortypoundhead.com/showcontent.asp?artid=23993

With Microsoft's' continued support of VB6 for at least another 10 years it should be fully supported by including the VB6 IDE.

              • Make Visual Studio per-monitor/multi-monitor DPI aware

                http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/dd464646
                http://imgur.com/qAiVw1Q,eVRIBlZ

When dragging VS 2013.1 Express to my second monitor running at a different DPI, it becomes blurry. VS seems to be acting as if it only has support for global DPI settings instead of per-monitor settings. It would be great if VS followed the same guidelines its users are attempting to follow when it comes to developing desktop apps ;-).

                  Hello voters!

While I don’t have concrete plans to share yet, I do want to let you know that we recently started looking into this and what will it take for us to provide better support for this scenario.

I’ll provide another update once I have more concrete information to share.

                  Thank you!

                • Congratulations to Microsoft for extending VB6 programming support to Windows 10

This idea is a proposal of thanks to Microsoft for extending VB6 support to Windows 10.

Microsoft say "VB6 runtime will ship and will be supported in Windows 10 for the lifetime of the OS. Visual Basic 6.0 runtime files continue to be 32-bit only and all components must be hosted in 32-bit application processes. Developers can think of the support story for Windows 10 being the same as it is for Windows 8.1."

                  https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/ms788708.aspx

This means that VB6 programming is supported until at least 2025.

                  THANK YOU, MICROSOFT !

                  • Support Silverlight projects in Visual Studio 2017

I was shocked to discover this by accident while evaluating 2017 to prepare for an upgrade from 2015. I am supporting several live Silverlight projects that are likely to have a lifespan of at least a few more years. This an upgrade blocker for me, and I was really looking forward to 2017.

Perhaps support could be provided as an extension in a similar way to how support for vdproj (setup) projects was restored.

                      • Organize project XML files to reduce 3-way merge conflicts

If the project XML file contents were simply ordered, for instance alphabetically like a default file system view, it would drastically reduce the number of merge conflicts that edits cause.

Currently we see items added at the same spot in the file (so there is SOME order happening) with no relation other than time, causing a merge conflict that's completely avoidable. If an order was applied, it would make most 3-way merges automatic and/or a lot less work.

                        • Allow free download of the VB6 programming language and IDE

Microsoft currently make the VB6 programming language and IDE available to all MSDN subscribers for download from the subscriber downloads section. A generic subscriber key is also provided.

Microsoft should now make this available for free download without requiring a paid MSDN subscription.

This is already done with the Expression Web software, so it wouldn't be creating a new precedent.

Add "exclude files" to the "Look in" options under Find and Replace. There are times when certain files are always going to be impertinent to search for, and it would be nice to know that search will not be bogged down by those files.

Markdown is known as best idea for project text files. For example most README files novadays are written in markdown.

Also default README.md could be possible added to project templates.

To get more details visit Markdown specs page http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/.

                              • support project.json/global.json for all project types, not just ASP.NET

As demonstrated at TechEd, ASP.NET vNext projects support a new Nuget mechanism whereby packages are organized in a by-project project.json file. Also of particular interest is the ability to override the package with local sources in a solution file called global.json, which facilitates a much smoother way to contribute to projects outside the solution. Please do this for all project types.

                                • Microsoft can make an update of the VB6 to VB7 (Classic VB)

                                  1) It should be able to create VB Command Line application.
                                  2) API selection dialog which will put the selected API on the project.
                                  3) It should be able to create both 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
                                  4) It should also have a feature to create self dependent application which doesn't depend on any runtime library.
                                  5) Change the looks similar to the VS2013/VS2015.

                                  # If Microsoft does create this new COM based programming language I am sure many programmers will switch back to Microsoft.
                                  # And really there is not point in abandoning such a huge crowd of programmers who…

                                  • Add support for ALPN to System.Net.Security.SslStream

The proposal is to add TLS ALPN support to the System.Net.Security.SslStream API. One of the key applications of this would be to negotiate SPDY or HTTP/2 connection with a server.

"Microsoft drove into the TLS working group a new standard called ALPN: [IETFDRAFT-ALPN] Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), "Transport Layer Security (TLS) Application Layer Protocol Negotiation Extension", draft-ietf-tls-applayerprotoneg-00, April 2013, http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-tls-applayerprotoneg-00 This standard uses a TLS extension during the handshake to communicate to the server/client what inner protocol will be spoken over the secure stream. For instance, this is how SPDY and HTTP/2.0 connections are negotiated between browsers and compatible…

                                    • Add ligatures to Consolas font

I like coding with ligatures, using FiraCode font:
                                      https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode

But as much as I like the ligatures, I find the font itself (letters and numbers) to be less nice than Consolas, which I really like.

My suggestion is to add optional ligatures to Consolas, for people who want them.

                                      • Support JavaScript debugging for Microsoft edge

Visual Studio should stop debugging when Microsoft Edge is closed. Additionally Visual Studio should be able to debug JavaScript running in the Microsoft Edge browser.

                                        • Allow users to install entirely to another hard drive

Allow a user to install *all* of Visual Studio to a drive other than the system drive. I have a very small SSD and find it infuriating that Visual Studio can only install a third to my mechanical drive and must install 4GB to my system drive.

We expect to make significant progress on this front in the upcoming release. There are some components which must be installed to the system drive for various reasons – for example, Windows hotfixes and .NET Framework releases. But we think we will be able to do a better job of honoring the chosen location in the next release.

To give some transparency into the design process, one interesting wrinkle to this problem is third-party components that we install. If you choose to install Visual Studio to (say) D:\VS, where should we install something like Git for Windows or the Android SDK (if you select those components)? Should we install them into a subdirectory of D:\VS, even though other apps may use them? And should we attempt to secure the directory? C:\Program Files is only writeable by admin users, which presents a security boundary to rogue apps. Tough choices…

                                            Thanks,…
