You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Provide better documentation and code examples for implementing language service extensions

    It seems to me that a majority of the documentation that covered "writing your own language" is out of date, referring back to Visual Studio 2005 and 2008 implementations that no longer seem to work. The concepts still exist in the newest 2015 release, but implementations have changed enough that the current documentation isn't enough to help migrate developers to the current way it should be done.

    And/Or

    Refactor the Roslyn project to have a generic base in which other language designers can build upon. Today it is too tightly coupled with C# and VB to be able to easily…

    • Diagnostic Tools

      Diagnostic Tools: great tool! So much easier then UMDH!
      I really miss a lot the fact of being able to save a complete session, with everything in it, including call stack. The user could have an option to save in the proprietary format of in text. This later could be searched easily. That would really big plus for me.

      • Fix the debugger c++ variable scoping problems

        Since Visual Studio has changed to comply with variables declared in for loops, the debugger needs to be modified to take account of that. Consider the following code:

        for( int index = 0; index < 10; ++index )
        {
        x[index] = 0;

        for( index = 0; index < 10; ++index )
        {
        y[index] = 0;
        }
        }

        While stepping through the code, if I put the cursor over the "index" variable, the debbuger does not track the scope of the variables and will show incorrect values for the index in the outer loop.

        Sorry about any typeos here. This little…

          • In the Git changes form, use autocomplete to assist with commenting

            When typing the comment for a Git commit, it is useful to have AutoComplete or Intellisense to assist with typing.

            It would be even more useful if VS could autopopulate with a logical summary e.g. "Rename this to that"

            • keyword "checked" should can be not use the return value

              While I'm doing with the db pager, I found I should check the page index and page size which is user input.
              So I write these codes.

              public static void CheckPagerParameter(int pageIndex,int pageSize)
              {
              try
              {
              checked(pageIndex*pageSize);
              }
              catch(OverflowException exception)
              {
              throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("index and size are too bigger",exception);
              }
              }

              But it can not compiler finish until I change "checked(pageIndex*pageSize)" to "int forCheck=checked(pageIndex*pageSize)".
              Why we must use the return value?
              Sometimes, we really do not care the return value from checked keyword.

              Please change this.

                • Simultaneous Debug and Compile

                  I'd love to see visual studio launch its debugger against a startup project BEFORE it fires off "msbuild" to compile all solution/project changes.

                  That way the startup project could begin any necessary bootstrapping work, load most modules, attach the debugger, load most symbols into the debugger and so on. (The startup project would then need to accept a keystroke from the user before proceeding. ) All this stuff can easily take 5 seconds, even in a custom written harness for unit testing. It would be nice if this work was already well underway by the time "msbuild" finished the compiling…

                  • MSDN documentation should not only provide documentation for using Eclipse and Xcode, but also Jetbrains IDE's

                    Jetbrains' IDE's actually have nice supported TFS integration, and I believe that Microsoft should show how to use them. They already do the same for eclipse and Xcode.

                        • Hire the blind programmer Ali Abdulghani to Microsoft

                          I recently encountered Ali in an article. http://fossboss.com/2016/07/18/meet-ali-abdulghani-blind-programmer-working-field-open-source/
                          I don't know him. While he is a great guy, and his achievements as a blind programmer is astonishing, I am not asking this as a favor to him. But instead he has tremendous experience on accessibility due to his condition. He could be very helpful to Microsoft and others like himself.

                          • Same .NET Capabilities for Windows & Windows Phone

                            We all know that Universal Apps are growing and recommended. However, with the number of differences between the .NET capabilities between Windows & Windows Phone, I sometimes find it frustrating to be forced to use significantly different techniques, classes, etc. when converting code between the two. I think that for all classes and/or features possible (anything other than stuff like the Back button on the phone, a keyboard for a Windows Device, or the Charms in Windows that) the same code should be available. I have had scenarios involving classes that are completely unrelated to the user interface (just the…

                            • Support creating Visual Studio extensions for earlier VS versions

                              Right now one has to have Visual Studio 2010 installed to create a new extension, which would work on it (or do lots of trickery).

                              It would be much better if VS Package wizard would ask for minimum target version, or determine it automatically based on target framework version.

                              • Async SyncLock

                                It would be great to have the possibility to do async synclocks.

                                Take the example of a data cache on an asp.net website.

                                Private DataLockObject As New Object

                                Public Async Function GetData(Name As String) As Task(Of String)
                                Dim Cache = HttpContext.Current.Cache
                                Dim tmp As String = Cache.Get(Name)
                                If tmp Is Nothing Then
                                Await SyncLock DataLockObject
                                If tmp Is Nothing Then
                                tmp = await GetDataFromDatabaseAsync(Name)
                                Cache.Insert(Name, tmp, Nothing, Date.Now.AddMinutes(5), System.Web.Caching.Cache.NoSlidingExpiration)
                                End If
                                End SyncLock
                                End If
                                Return tmp
                                End Function

                                The problem with this code is that 1. I cannot await a synclock (so my thread gets stuck doing nothing) 2.…

                                • Add localization and translation tools in Visual Studio

                                  Now i'm having several Resources.xx.resx files open. I first add them in English and translate them to other languages manually using bing.com/translate and google.com/translate.

                                  Wouldn't it not be great to suggest translations automatically via Bing.com and that you just have to approve or correct them?

                                  Or adding a system like https://www.transifex.com/ (maybe to visualstudio.com) would be such an improvement!

                                      • Make Alt + Ctrl + F to reformat code to unify with VS Code

                                        VS Code uses Alt + Ctrl + F to format code and when you use it a lot and then switch to VS2015 you keep using Alt+Ctrl+F. Would be great to unify it.

                                        • We should be able to trigger Visual Studio Team Services builds based on a path within the repository.

                                          We have several interconnected projects within a single repository, and it would be nice if we could build Project A when files in `my_repo/project_a` change, and not files in `my_repo/project_b`.
