I suggest you ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. make header include refactoring possible

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351244/make-header-include-refactoring-possible.html
Would be great to have a tool which will automatically remove unused headers. I a big projects (more than 1^6 LOC ) this becomes really both code and compile-time issue over the time.

Another idea is to move from precompiled header those header files which are used only once and move those used more than once into precompiled header. Ideally those thresholds are configurable.

    • Add support for ALPN to System.Net.Security.SslStream

The proposal is to add TLS ALPN support to the System.Net.Security.SslStream API. One of the key applications of this would be to negotiate SPDY or HTTP/2 connection with a server.

"Microsoft drove into the TLS working group a new standard called ALPN: [IETFDRAFT-ALPN] Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), "Transport Layer Security (TLS) Application Layer Protocol Negotiation Extension", draft-ietf-tls-applayerprotoneg-00, April 2013, http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-tls-applayerprotoneg-00 This standard uses a TLS extension during the handshake to communicate to the server/client what inner protocol will be spoken over the secure stream. For instance, this is how SPDY and HTTP/2.0 connections are negotiated between browsers and compatible…

        • Include Pex and Moles with all Visual Studio editions

Include Pex and Moles with all editions of Visual Studio including Professional edition rather than being restricted to developers with Premium or Ultimate editions of Visual Studio. This will allow all Visual Studio developers to leverage the capabilities of the Moles mocking library and the additional feedback for Unit Testing available with Pex.

There is a visible lag between the moment you press a key and the moment this translates into a character on the screen. Things like Go To Definition, and scrolling, can hang for several seconds.

It appears to get worse over time as you work in the editor.

Hello again voters and reporters for this UserVoice item

Visual Studio 2017 RTW, released yesterday, contains fixes to many of the worst issues we are aware of that caused typing delays. To get the benefit, if you haven’t already done so, please download it today from https://www.visualstudio.com/downloads/

We’ve also included enhanced typing telemetry in the new release, so we can continue to focus on improving those issues that remain, and we’ll alert you via the Visual Studio Performance Center (see https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/visualstudio/2016/10/10/faster-visual-studio-15-startup/ for details) when an extension is slowing your typing down.

We’re not done: we intend to make further improvements to typing responsiveness in updates to Visual Studio 2017.

              Thank you

Please open up the API for CodeLens now that Roslyn is available to the wider public. It would allow to to do some great stuff on the local code. I would not mind a model that only works locally for now, though a server side API would be nice.

                • Bring back support for Smart Device Extensions

Microsoft caused outrage when without warning or explanation they dropped support for the Smart Device Extensions. Meaning that there is no support for both managed (Compact Framework) and unmanaged (C++) development for the Windows CE platform.

Microsoft promised support would be added by the time VS2010 was released but then back tracked, to date the official line is use VS2008. This product is nearly 4 years old, it is becoming increasingly more impractical to use VS2008 solely for the purpose of developing for the Windows CE platform. Many development teams invested heavily in the benefit of having a single UI…

                  • Fix it so that .NET apps can access HTTP thru authenticating proxy server by default

If you run a .NET app that needs to talk to the web, and you're behind an authenticating proxy server, then that app will fail to talk to the web.

Internet Explorer and Google Chrome work, Visual Studio and loads of other Microsoft apps will work. They can all talk to the web. But every .NET-based app or website I've ever seen will fail.

The implications of this are profound. I've seen umpteen forum posts over the years where people are scratching their heads, wondering what's wrong. I've seen IT guys re-route their users thru special-case connections to the web,…

                    • Visual Basic 6.0 (Classic) upgrade to 7.0 should be able to compile standalone Win32, Win64 EXE and Android APK

                      1. First of all Visual Basic Classic should be brought back! (i.e: Visual Basic 7.0)
                      2. Visual Basic Classic version should compile to standalone Win32, Win64 executables and Android applications (the APIs which are available and common to both).

By compiling to Android APK I mean the language of coding should be BASIC which is JAVA in Android Studio.

There are many programs/frameworks on the internet which use Basic Language to compile Android applications.

Even Delphi (Pascal) creates Android applications.

If Microsoft makes this new Visual Basic Classic, there will be a steep rise in Visual Basic Classic programmers. Any…

                      • Add API for invoking VC++ compiler

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
                        https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/351598/add-api-for-invoking-vc-compiler.html
It would be great to have an API for the C++ compiler. To create better tools that implement support for the VC++ toolchain, it would grant a great performance benefit for invoking the compiler programatically.

                        - No seperate process creation.
                        - Include dependency parsing without /showincludes option.
                        - Compiling sources dynamically without writing them to the disk.
                        - Other benefits.

I suppose it would not take too much effort to provide such an API, as the compilation is already separated to different dlls…

As a C++ developer I am always sad when seeing cool features only available for C#, VB, ... e.g. IntelliTrace would be really useful to get rid of these invisible, hidden, and not reproducable errors.

Data Breakpoints are very useful when debugging state issues as they break into the debugger when the value of a variable changes.

It is currently only supported in C/C++

Please extend support to C# and the other managed languages. We need it badly. The reason there is no uservoice suggestion is that most NET Developers don't know it exists in C++

I'd like to see a full read/eval/print loop for C# built into Visual Studio - much like F# Interactive, or Ruby's "irb".

When debugging, this would let you interact with the current state of the debugged application - like the Immediate Window does now, but more powerful (e.g. with support for lambdas).

When in design/editing mode, this would work a lot like LinqPad, but integrated into the IDE. It would let you evaluate expressions and execute multi-statement code blocks. This would let developers…

I have to assume the people who developed the VS2012/2013 test explorer view never actually had to use it in production. The test explorer view is horribly limited in comparison to the one in VS2010.

                                1. Running tests does not open the Test Explorer window until after all the tests completed running. There's literally no indication that anything is happening. VS2010 immediately opened the window to show you that the tests were running.

                                2. Where are the columns? Most importantly: the error message…

VS 2013 has a "Change Authentication" feature invoked when you create a project.

You cannot run it standalone and worse of all you cannot run it after the project has been created.

Consider e.g. having a VS 2012 project and wanting to upgrade to VS 2013 and use AAD instead of ADFS.

Not a new project so can't use the "Change Authentication" wizard. Never used AAD before so no idea what the WIF constructs are!

Hi everyone. Thanks for the comments. I work on the ASP.NET tooling team and I wanted to let you all know that we are very interested in enabling this. Right now we are working on some support that will enable adding/removing auth to be much easier. After that work is done we are hoping to enable a way to add (and potentially remove + replace) the auth for an ASP.NET project.
I don’t have permissions to change the status here, but I will ask that it gets updated to Under Investigation. I don’t want to mark it as started because we are still doing some infrastructure changes to enable it. I’m hoping we can start the actual work in a couple of months but I can’t say for sure until we get past the current set of feature work.

                                  • Please bring back the "Photoshop" import option in Blend 2015

If Photoshop importer is not supported in Blend 2015, it impedes our migration plan to Blend 2015 and we'll have to keep using Blend 2013.

We recognize that one of the advantages of WPF is that it can separate design from logic.
We place orders of screen designs to companies who specialize in design and we don't put the ability of using Blend as the basis of selection.
Designers deliver products in the form of Photoshop or Illustrator. Our current partner delivers with Photoshop format.

If we can't import Photoshop file directly, we have to create XAML with referencing the…

                                    • Stop automatically messing with my solution configurations and platforms

Every single time I add a project to a solution, Visual Studio "helpfully" adds to the solution every configuration it finds in the project.

Every single time the project has a platform that the solution doesn't, Visual Studio "helpfully" creates the missing solution platform and also, most annoyingly, "Mixed Platforms".

PLEASE leave them alone. I set them up how I like and I'd like them to stay that way.

                                      Example use case #2:

I create a new project (defaults to x86) and add a Util library (AnyCPU). Wham, I'm only 5 seconds into a new project and I already have…

                                      • Make IntelliTest available to Visual Studio Professional

In Visual Studio 2015 IntelliTest are a fantastic idea!
Restricting it to Visual Studio Ultimate is not a good news. Please make it available to more users.

                                        • Please, please compromise with Visual Basic 6 users...

                                          Dear Microsoft,

It is abundantly clear that you will never produce a new version of VB6, especially not one which is 64-bit and cross platform. Doing so would compete with your goals of subscription based software in the near future.

So... how about a simple compromise with the VB6 users? I use VB.NET and I like it. But the syntax is extremely difficult for many users. However, I have been working around this problem for sometime now. I have created my own huge runtime library of wrapper functions (including API calls) to replace familiar VB6 functions which have been removed…
