  1. customize "search work items" query

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/379592/customize-search-work-items-query.html
The current "search work items" text box (in web access & visual studio) searches for the given text in fixed fields (Title, Description, Repro steps).

However I would like to customize that to add the (in our case) "Description HTML" field. Since our work items still use that field (from previous version of TFS).
Further I could imagine adding an custom TFS field and also be able to default search in that field.

(BTW I know about the possiblities described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc668120.aspx for…

You can search work items using custom fields e.g. I can do a : value and it should work just fine. E.g. I just did a “reason:duplicate” and it showed all the bugs that were resolved as duplicate.

Please let me know whether you are looking at other similar capabilities.

    Thanks

  2. Search for Pull Requests by Title / Description

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/365645/search-for-pull-requests-by-title-description.html
We have the capability to search for PRs by ID, but sometimes the only thing you remember is the general topic of the PR. It'd be nice to search for PRs by title / description keywords.

Example: I'm looking for the PR where I updated the version of the ADAL library that we use. So, I on the Pull Requests tab, I search for "ADAL" and am presented with PRs where the term "ADAL" was in the title or description

  3. add support of the pdf, docx, pdf, pptx, png, jpeg and other file formats to the Code Search feature in TFS

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/379596/add-support-of-the-pdf-docx-pdf-pptx-png-jpeg-and.html
With TFS 2017 comes a great feature - Code search. However it does not index pdf, docx, pptx, doc, ppt and other MS Office file formats as well as png, jpeg and other widely used formats.

Please add this feature to the Code Search. I think it will be useful for your source control.

  4. Search in code should support exact literal text search

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/379605/search-in-code-should-support-exact-literal-text-s.html
Search should support EXACT literal matching to help filter out noise on large code bases. e.g. I want to be able to search for "foo bar" and find only cases of that literal string match. Instead what I get are matches to foo, bar and even foo-bar. For common terms or large code bases that is completely useless as there isn't any way to filter it down. I've tried using "" around the text I want as the docs suggest but that still…

  7. Code search by author in Visual Studio Online

Allow either filter or search the code by author.

Sometimes you may not remember the code path, or any other property of the code file you are searching for, but the author

Filtering or searching by author would help in this case.

Another helpful search capability for this scenario would be to be able to specify a timeframe the sought-for change was made, or be able to order search results by modification timestamp.

  8. search within pull request

Search for keywords within a Pull request. It would be useful if we could make the 'find file or folder' to be kind of like the omni bar.. searching for any keywords should display list of files containing that specific word. Useful if you want to see where all a newly added variable is referenced

  9. Allow regular expressions in Code Search

    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/379595/allow-regular-expressions-in-code-search.html
I’ve been trying to find are hard-coded IP addresses and domain names, so I can extract those to configuration files. I am able to do this in Visual Studio on the desktop, but there are times when it is more convenient to do this online, where I can search multiple repositories at once.

This would be extremely powerful if I could also search across branches.

  10. Search for partial or similar word

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/379593/search-for-partial-or-similar-word.html
    Hello,

Currently when you search for a word in the VSTS search box, it has to be the exact word to be found.

It would be nice if VSTS would take into account similar or partial words, like plurals.

This way, if I search for the words "Customer", VSTS would also return the items containing the "Customers" word.

Another great addition would be to search for similar words. Imagine a search for "Activity", and all the items containing the word "Activities" are returned.

  11. Code Search View Allow Linking to Highlighted Text

When viewing a source file in Visual Studio Online I'm able to select text and a little chainlink icon pops up, which when clicked provides me with a link to the selected text.

When viewing the same source file in the Code Search View, I have no way of doing this. It would be nice to link directly to a line of a file from the Code Search View.

  12. Cannot search all work items from Work Items page

You cannot search all work items from the Work Items page. The filters always requires one of the following to be selected:
    Assigned to Me
    Following
    Mentioned
    My activity
    Recently updated
    Recently completed
    Recently created

There is no option to select <none>. It is impossible to search for a keyword across all work items from this page.

It should be possible to remove that limit, and allow you to search _all_ work items.

  13. Extend Code Search to search history

Extend Code Search (2017.2) to search previous versions of files and not just latest, including TFVC changeset comments.

E.g. a certain string is contained in file "x" in version 1, while version 2 (the latest) of the same file hasn't it; while searching for the aforementioned string, i would like file "x" to appear in the results.

Recently Updated filter filters OUT Completed (Stage="Done") Work Items. These should be included..

All completions count as updates but not all updates count as completion

that's how it should be, but that's not how it is.

  15. Make it possible to type the Repro/Branch/Path fields when searching code.

This suggestion is migrated to Developer Community. Please use below link to view the current status.
    https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/idea/366147/make-it-possible-to-type-the-reprobranchpath-field.html
Selecting from the list is fine.
But it's a tedious work when there're multiple levels (e.g. for Path).
It would be nice if I can directly input the path.
It would be great if it filters/provides hints I can select as I'm typing.

  16. Tabbed search

We often need to search multiple search strings when investigation/researching code. Having to open a brand new VSTS tab makes the whole experience heavy. Instead, what if search has a tabbed ui where users can create any number of tabs. Each tab would have a different search result set.

  17. Open item from search

Please provide us an ability to open work items from a search - it is only possible to view them (right/bottom), but it is not possible to open it when I switch off the preview pane.

    Thanks

  18. Configure default search scope by Team Project with User Preference Override (Code, Work Item, Wiki)

Recent changes that have added code search and wiki search have caused issues for many that have the search box as the go to for work item management. Currently, it now defaults to Wiki which is not preferred for us.

Ideally, the default search scope should be configurable by Team Project. If we could have a preference override, that would be a bonus (like that of the UI option to show the box around fields or not).

I understand the results pane shows all 3 option results, but that is just one more click to deal with.

    Thanks!

  19. Add option for case sensitive code search

In our codebase with have plenty of tokens that don't qualify as either of the existing categories but are named all upper case. Unfortunately, some of the names are generic enough and generate a lot of hits in addition to the tokens needed. It also would help with "standard" code searches as consistent casing is often used to distinguish classes from functions from local variables (but picking the corresponding category to search in is tedious).

  20. Search box should provide shortcuts to various VSTS features

Navigating around in VSTS either takes many clicks or settings are buried in places one might not expect.

It is common for desktop users to launch apps and get to various system settings within an operating system using search.

Would it not be great if we could just search for what we wanted.

    Examples:

searching 'teams' or 'membership' would give an option to jump straight to managing teams.

searching 'repositories' gives an option to manage repositories

There are alot of little features in VSTS that are buried away under multiple clicks. Using the search box to reach them would be…
