How can we improve Team Services?

Make Reporting in TFS Fast and Fluid

Make Reporting in TFS Fast and Fluid

Using Analysis Services and Reporting Services may have seemed like a good idea back in 2003 when you first started designing TFS 2005, however in 2012 these technologies are archaic and difficult to use.

Throw out SSRS and SSAS, heck in TFS 2012 in the new Web Access the team already created a new reporting system for burndowns and for the kanban reports.

Now for TFS 2015 it's time to make reporting EASY for non developers, EASY for managers, and fast and fluid for general end users to design and change.

Look at things like power pivot and rally. There are much BETTER, EASIER, and more powerful ways to do reporting than SSRS and SSAS.

We are continuing work on the new Analytics Service for TFS Hosted and will have an announcement on when public preview will be available for the hosted version in the next few months. If you are interested in testing a private preview of the service now, please contact me at jozimm@microsoft.com.

I also want to reassure everyone that the On-Premises version is in development and we are fully committed to delivering on it.

The Analytics Service is the backend for a suite of new features we are very excited about including new Dashboard Widgets, Power BI connectors, Power BI templates but most importantly we want you to be able to get your data where you need it. I would like to hear what your goals are for reporting and what we can do to help. Please email me or just post to this thread directly.

    Thank you,
    Josh Zimmerman

It would be nice to have standard Agile reports out of the box. We have used both PowerBI Desktop and data packs, but they aren't very easy for your standard user. For Scrum: Burnups by Story Point, the ability to customize Velocity so you can see committed velocity and actual velocity side by side, Backlog Health (no of estimated stories vs non estimated stories) For Kanban, lead time and cycle time charts. It seems that sometimes you are mixing the reporting for Kanban and Scum. The Cumulative flow is normally a Kanban chart where Scrum would like a Burnup by Effort.

Is there any update on this feedback? Any idea when we can see this new dashboard platform?

I am also of the opiniion that make reporting in TFS much faster and easier for non-technical people. Creating excel and pivot reports is of cource good, but for a customer, Business Analyst etc, this becomes too much tedious. Hope to see simple but strong reporting capabilities down the next releases in TFS.

If you want more votes, you should substantiate your assertions. For instance, would power pivot and rally handle all of the existing TFS reports? For what scenarios are there "better, easier, and more powerful ways to do reporting"?
