There is a new 4.7 release of the VB6 installer..

      http://nuke.vbcorner.net/Articles/VB60/VisualStudio6Installer/tabid/93/language/en-US/Default.aspx

This has been tested on Windows 10 version 1607

The Visual Studio install wizard installs the VB6 programming IDE and language on Windows 10 (and also Windows 7 and 8).

VB6 is needed more than ever...

Windows 10 for PC – the full desktop version – is coming to mobile ARM processors in 2017.

Users will be able to install any x86 Win32 app – unmodified – from any source, no repackaging as UWP or delivery via the Windows Store required. The apps are not sandboxed and they will have full access to the OS.
Microsoft demoed a device easily running the full Adobe Photoshop app along with Microsoft Office.

Even today the 18 year old VB6 programming language remains popular. It is time for Microsoft to update VB6.

      paulpaul commented  ·

Microsoft should update the VB6 programming environment.

@Windows ME, the best windows ever.

You inadvertently make an excellent point.
We have all heard the news that Microsoft are to put full desktop Windows 10 on ARM processors (for laptops, tablets and maybe phones). So ARM will be able to support VB6 applications and the VB6 programming IDE.

So now would be the time to bring back an updated version of Windows 9x (not ME but Windows 98 would be fine) to run on small IoT devices (Raspberry Pi and similar). These would run VB6 with its low RAM and CPU requirements, where .Net and other languages would struggle.
Everything Microsoft have tried so far for IoT has failed because it has been too bloated for low-cost IoT boards.

At last Microsoft could have a product for these devices, something they haven't really had since Windows CE and Windows Mobile 6.x

        Good suggestion @Windows ME.

The VB6 IDE works fine on Windows 10. Microsoft should support it. They support the VB6 runtime.

            paulpaul commented  ·

Microsoft please update or open source the VB6 programming environment.

VB6 was Microsoft’s most successful programming language, even today 15 years after you abandoned it, it remains widely used. While its replacement slowly fades away.

            https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dotnet/2016/05/20/happy-25th-birthday-vb/

Support VB6 programming, VBA programming and VBScript programming.

              @axisdj

You may have wanted 99% compatibility, but Olaf ruled out ActiveX support.

99% should mean that 99% of your project shouldn't require any modification. Olaf's view wasn't that. He considered that all ActiveXs should be removed.

              Even VB.Net supports ActiveXs.

There is a big difference between the 'language' being 99% compatible and an application being 99% compatible.
The VBScript language has a large degree of compatibility with the VB6 language, but you can't move VB6 projects to VBScript.

(I assumed Lofaday was referring to your Indiegogo project).

              paulpaul commented  ·

              @Lofaday

"I have considered re-writing the thing myself but there was a kickstarter project some while back that virtually NOBODY backed. If anyone can suggest a practical way of rallying all this VB6 revival sentiment, I'd be all ears! "

The big problem with that kickstarter (just as with VB.Net and other development tools put forward as VB6 replacements) was that it didn't offer backwards compatibility with your VB6 source code.
Without that commitment to backwards compatibility any VB6 replacement is bound to fail.

The suggestion here (for a VB-like language compiling to JavaScript) is an excellent suggestion. But it isn't a replacement for VB6. It is a way to extend your VB6 skills and knowledge to web and mobile.

              paulpaul commented  ·

Such an obvious idea, for both VB6 programming and VBA programming. Microsoft should do this.

              paulpaul commented  ·

JavaScript hybrid apps are the way forward for mobile.

And lots of developers are familiar with VB6 or VBA.

              A good way forward.

              paulpaul commented  ·

              Yes, do this.

              I would use it.

              paulpaul commented  ·

This is a surprisingly good idea.

              paulpaul commented  ·

VB cross compiling to JavaScript. A great idea. If Microsoft do this they will start to become relevant again.

It is time VB6 was updated.

                Please rethink this.

Microsoft have no excuse for still charging to download the VB6 programming language.

                  Make it a free download.

                      Update or open source VB6
